Just the other day sitting around with some of my friends, SOMEHOW. The subject of Baseball came up. This brought to mind an episode of many years ago. When as a mere lad, my parents and our neighbors decided to make the 50 mile trip to a new store. They called it a “DISCOUNT DEPARTMENT STORE”. Now we had big stores in the big town we called the County Seat. We had a Montgomery Ward, a J.C. Penny and a local store that was about the same size as the previous mentioned named. But a “discount store” what was that? So one day we all set out on the 50 mile journey. WOW! There we were a Huge building with only one store. Inside I looked around with my parents and neighbors. But wait. I discovered the sporting good department, much larger than the sporting good store we had in our county. Being summer I was drawn to the baseball section. THEN; there it was a big black baseball glove. Not only was I attracted to it because it was black and the only gloves I had seen were brown. It was larger than any I had seen before. I kept coming back to it, wishing it were mine. But at that time $10 was a lot of money. My neighbor friend, her name was Katie; saw me admiring it and asked if I wanted it. Yes I said. She offered to buy it for me if i would mow her yard until it was paid for. I had to mow her yard for the remainder of the summer. BUT I had the glove I wanted so much. The other kept referring to it as a “peach basket” because it was large, NOT any bigger than what you see outfielders wear now-a-days. I was a Pee Wee leaguer and played center field, just like Mickey Mantle. (Well maybe not exactly just like Mickey). But I was proud of it, I caught more balls with it. But I was also proud of it because unlike many of my friends, whose parents bought their gloves, I EARNED IT AND PAID FOR IT MYSELF. That store just happened to be JUBILEE CITY. Jubilee City was an early discount department-store chain that tried to give American families a new kind of shopping experience: a large store where customers could purchase clothing, household goods, and other merchandise at competitive prices. The company emerged during a major transformation in American retailing. Suburban communities were growing, families increasingly depended on automobiles, and discount retailers were challenging traditional department stores. Jubilee City expanded beyond its original market, including into Tulsa, Oklahoma; Indianapolis, Indiana; Kansas City; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and the Houston area. But the business model that helped the company expand also created problems with management, merchandising, and distribution. Its operations gradually disappeared during the 1970s. The founding: Jubilee Shops in 1955 The history of Jubilee City begins in 1955, when Lawrence Altman founded Jubilee Shops Inc. in New York. Altman came from the traditional clothing business. He recognized that consumers were becoming interested in discount shopping and that a large store could attract customers by offering a broad selection of goods at lower prices. Rather than relying entirely on conventional department-store operations, Jubilee Shops developed an unusual arrangement: manufacturers and other operators could lease departments or sales-floor space inside the stores. This approach allowed Jubilee to offer merchandise from different suppliers without having to operate every department itself. It also reduced some of the need for the company to buy and manage all its merchandise through the conventional retail system. The company experimented with stores in the New York and New Jersey region before pursuing wider expansion. The precise locations and chronology of every early store remain incompletely documented. What made Jubilee City different? Jubilee City’s concept was to provide a broad, one-stop shopping experience rather than operate as a small specialty shop. Its stores could include departments selling: Clothing and apparel, Household goods, General merchandise Products supplied by independent manufacturers and department operators. Other consumer goods intended for everyday family shopping. The exact merchandise selection varied by location; surviving online historical records do not provide a complete inventory for every store. The leased-department system was central to the concept. Instead of having the parent company directly control every product category, separate operators could run different sections of the same building. This arrangement could broaden the selection available to customers. However, it also made the business more complicated to coordinate as the chain grew. Expansion into new markets during the 1960s During the early 1960s, Jubilee City sought to establish itself in markets where discount shopping was expanding but where opportunities remained for new regional competitors. The company negotiated locations in several metropolitan areas, sometimes pursuing multiple sites in the same market. Expansion required buildings, investment capital, suppliers, and local support. The chain’s historical footprint included the following locations. These are documented examples, not a claim that the list covers every store ever planned or operated. Where Jubilee City operated 6925 East Admiral Place, Tulsa The store operated from approximately 1962 to 1970. It became part of Tulsa’s early discount-shopping landscape and was later associated with Belscot and other retail uses. The property was subsequently subdivided. Indianapolis, Indiana 5302 North Keystone Avenue A documented Jubilee City location that operated into 1975. The building survived, although the property was later divided for other uses. Houston, Texas 10400 Eastex Freeway This location operated from approximately 1961 to 1963 and later became a Globe store. The building was eventually demolished during freeway expansion. Two other proposed Houston-area sites did not become completed Jubilee City stores. Kansas City area Kansas City, Kansas; Raytown and Shawnee, Missouri/Kansas area Historical records identify stores at 4915 State Avenue, 8760 Blue Ridge Boulevard, and 11215 West 63rd Street. These locations closed as Jubilee City stores around 1966, and the properties were later used by other businesses. Chattanooga, Tennessee 5615 Lee Highway This location operated into approximately… Continue reading Jubilee City

Public Service Announcement Hurricane Season Is Here — Prepare Now
Hurricane season is here, and now is the time to prepare, not panic. Each year, hurricane season brings the potential for dangerous winds, torrential rain, flooding, power outages, and severe property damage. Even communities far from the coast can experience life-threatening weather conditions from the outer bands of these storms. A hurricane does not need to make a direct hit to cause devastation. Strong winds can bring down trees and power lines. Heavy rain can lead to flash flooding in a matter of minutes. Roads may become impassable, and emergency services can be delayed during the height of a storm. That is why preparation is essential. Be Ready Before the Storm Arrives: Every household should have an emergency plan and supply kit ready before any storm watches or warnings are issued. Your emergency supplies should include: Drinking Water Canned and nonperishable food Flashlight and (extra batteries) Portable radio First aid supplies Prescription medications Important papers in (waterproof storage) Phone (chargers and backup batteries) CASH Pet food and supplies Plan for at least several days without electricity or access to stores. Know Where to Go, If local authorities issue an evacuation order, do not delay. Know your evacuation routes in advance and discuss a family meeting location in case you become separated. Make sure all family members know where to go and who to contact. Protect Your Property: Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, grills, tools, and anything that could become dangerous in high winds. Check your roof, windows, doors, and gutters for any needed repairs before storm season begins. Stay Informed Pay close attention to local weather reports and emergency alerts. Keep your phone charged and monitor official forecasts as storms can strengthen or change direction quickly. Final Warning: Hurricanes are unpredictable and can become dangerous with little notice. Preparation today can save lives tomorrow. Do not wait until the storm is on the radar. Prepare now, protect your family, and stay safe this hurricane season. Views: 1
INTRODUCTION TO THREE CARD POKER
[adrotate group=”1″] Three Card Poker is a popular casino table game that is fun and easy to learn. Here is a comprehensive guide on how to play, including rules, strategy, and payout odds. Rules of Three Card Poker Three Card Poker is played with a single deck of 52 cards. The game starts with players making an ante bet. Each player and the dealer then receive three cards, with players’ cards dealt face up and the dealer’s face down. Player’s Decision: Play: If a player thinks they have a strong hand, they can make an additional bet equal to the ante. Fold: If a player believes their hand is weak, they can fold and forfeit their ante bet. Dealer’s Qualification: The dealer must have a Queen-high hand or better to qualify. If the dealer does not qualify, the play bet is returned to the player, and the ante bet is paid out 1:1. Hand Comparison: If the dealer qualifies, the player’s hand is compared to the dealer’s. If the player’s hand is better, both the ante and play bets are paid out 1:1. If the dealer’s hand is better, the player loses both bets. Strategy for Three Card Poker The optimal strategy for Three Card Poker is quite straightforward: Raise: if you have a hand with a Queen-6-4 or better. Fold: if your hand is worse than Queen-6-4. (I have not seen Raise in any observations I have made) Payout Odds The standard payouts in Three Card Poker are as follows: Ante Bet: Paid 1:1 if the dealer does not qualify or if the player’s hand beats the dealer’s. Play Bet: Paid 1:1 if the player’s hand beats the dealer’s when the dealer qualifies. Ante Bonus Payouts: Straight Flush: Pays 5:1 Three of a Kind: Pays 4:1 Straight: Pays 1:1 Pair Plus Payouts: Straight Flush: Pays 40:1 Three of a Kind: Pays 30:1 Straight: Pays 6:1 Flush: Pays 3:1 Pair: Pays 1:1 Six Card Bonus Payouts: Royal Flush: Pays 1000:1 Straight Flush: Pays 200:1 Four of a Kind: Pays 100:1 Full House: Pays 20:1 Flush: Pays 15:1 Straight: Pays 10:1 Three of a Kind: Pays 7:1 These are the basic rules, strategies, and payout odds for Three Card Poker. Remember, while there is a small element of skill involved in the decision-making process, the game is largely based on luck. Always gamble responsibly and within your means. Enjoy the game! THE DISAPPEARANCE OF CENTRAL AMERICA part 2
[adrotate group=”1″] Central America has a rich and complex past, shaped by political upheavals, economic transformations, and social struggles. From its early days as part of the Spanish Empire to the tumultuous events of the 20th century, Central America has witnessed significant changes. Here’s a concise overview: Colonial Era and Independence: After centuries of Spanish colonization, Central America declared independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821. The region initially formed the Federal Republic of Central America, which included present-day countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica . However, this federation was short-lived. By 1822, some Central American countries were annexed by the First Mexican Empire under Emperor Agustín de Iturbide. Yet, they regained their independence and reconstituted the federal republic in 1823 . Economic Landscape and Social Struggles: In the aftermath of World War II, Latin America’s economic landscape underwent significant changes. The United Kingdom and the United States held political and economic interests in the region. Central America’s economy shifted from relying solely on agricultural exports to promoting internal development. However, this new system often favored capital over labor, leading to socioeconomic disparities . The most marginalized members of society faced unjust land tenure, labor coercion, and unequal political representation. Large corporations exerted influence, displacing self-sufficient farmers and workers . Central American Crisis (1970s-1990s): The late 1970s marked the onset of the Central American crisis. Major civil wars and communist revolutions erupted across the region. The United States feared that communist victories would isolate South America if Central American governments fell to pro-Soviet forces. Consequently, the U.S. supported right-wing governments against left-wing guerrillas . Notable events: Nicaragua: The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in 1979. The U.S. opposed the revolution due to FSLN’s communist sympathies and backed anti-left-wing rebels . El Salvador: The Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) fought against the military-led government. The U.S. supported the Salvadoran military and supplied arms . Guatemala: Civil war raged between 1962 and 1996, following a CIA-backed coup in 1954 . Legacy and Challenges: The Central American crisis left scars—thousands lost their lives, and societies grappled with trauma. Today, Central America faces ongoing challenges, including poverty, violence, and migration. Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, further impact the region . In summary, Central America’s history is a tapestry of struggle, resilience, and transformation. From colonial beginnings to modern complexities, this region continues to shape its destiny. THE DISAPPEARANCE of CENTRAL AMERICA: A TALE of INEQUALITY, VIOLENCE, and MIGRATION
[adrotate group=”1″] When I attended school way back in the 1950s, we were taught the 3 AMERICAS. 1. North America: Canada, United States of America, and Mexico. Then there was 2. Central America: Now made up of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. However, you rarely, (if ever), hear Central America mentioned. Did North America eat up these countries, OR did South America take them over? So I decided to do a little research. This is all I could come up with. Apparently this area is still CENTRAL AMERICA, seems the MEDIA is unaware of the existence of Central America. This will be a two post story. Please let me know… DOES CENTRAL AMERICA STILL EXIST? PART 1. Central America, a region steeped in history and complexity, has witnessed profound changes over the centuries. From colonial conquests to modern-day struggles, its story is one of resilience, tragedy, and hope. In this blog post, we explore the disappearance of Central America—a disappearance not of landmass but of lives, dreams, and stability. Roots of Inequality and Violence Central America’s woes trace back to the age of Spanish colonization. The legacy of inequality and violence has haunted the region for centuries. Here are some key factors: Spanish Conquest: The arrival of Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century marked the beginning of a tumultuous era. Indigenous populations were subjugated, their lands seized, and their cultures suppressed. The seeds of inequality were sown. Elites vs. Populations: Over time, small criminal elites thrived at the expense of the masses. These elites controlled resources, perpetuating poverty and injustice. The majority struggled to survive, caught in a cycle of exploitation. US Intervention: The United States played a pivotal role in Central America’s fate. Sometimes unintentionally, other times deliberately, US actions shaped the region. Whether motivated by profit or ideology, the consequences were far-reaching. The Desperate Exodus Fast-forward to the present day. Families in Central America face a hellish existence—a reality the US has helped create. Here’s how: Costly Journeys: Desperate to escape violence, poverty, and hopelessness, migrants embark on perilous journeys. The cost of smuggling services has skyrocketed—from $1,000 to up to $12,000. Families take out loans, hoping that reaching the US will be their salvation. US Policies: US foreign policy has often favored the powerful and wealthy. When activists championed the dispossessed, the US either intervened against them or turned a blind eye to their plight. The result? Families flee their homes, seeking refuge from a system that failed them. Unintended Consequences: Enforcement measures aimed at curbing illegal immigration inadvertently increased the stakes. Failure meant debt, and the only way to repay it was to keep trying. Women and children migrate, hoping to stay together. The Missing Voices Central America’s disappearance isn’t just about physical borders—it’s about the missing voices. More than two-thirds of migrants fleeing the northern triangle countries (Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador) have experienced murder, disappearance, or kidnapping . The toll is staggering: Guatemala: More than 45,000. El Salvador: Over 5,000. A Call for Change Central America’s struggle continues. Poverty, violence, and corruption persist. But so does resilience. Communities fight for justice, families search for their loved ones, and activists raise their voices. As we reflect on Central America’s disappearance, let us remember the faces behind the statistics—the lives lost, the dreams shattered. And let us advocate for a world where no one vanishes into the void, where every voice matters. In the end, Central America’s story isn’t one of disappearance; it’s a story of survival, endurance, and the unwavering quest for a better tomorrow. [adrotate group=”1″] Views: 124
THE ORIGINS of EIGHT-BALL
[adrotate group=”1″] 🎱 The game of eight-ball emerged around the 1900s in the United States. It evolved from a similar cue sport called pyramid pool, which allowed players to pocket any eight of the fifteen object balls to secure victory. However, two crucial changes transformed pyramid pool into the game we know today: Pocketing the 8-Ball Last: In eight-ball, the ultimate objective is to pocket the 8-ball. Unlike pyramid pool, where any ball could seal the win, eight-ball mandates that the 8-ball must be pocketed last. Half the Object Balls: Each player can only pocket half of the other object balls. This strategic twist adds depth to the game, as players must carefully choose their shots. The Essential Rules Here are the fundamental rules of eight-ball: Equipment: The game is played on a billiard table with six pockets, cue sticks, and a set of sixteen billiard balls (including the cue ball). The object balls consist of: Seven solid-colored balls numbered 1 through 7. Seven striped balls numbered 9 through 15. The black 8-ball. Break Shot: The game begins when the first player or team takes the break shot, striking the cue ball into the racked balls. The table opens up, and the players take turns until a ball is potted. Assigned Groups: After the break, a player is assigned either the group of solid or striped balls based on the first legally pocketed ball. They continue shooting at their assigned group. Clearing the Table: The goal is to legally pocket all the balls from your assigned group. Once a player clears their group, they can aim for the 8-ball. Winning Shot: To win, a player must legally pocket the 8-ball in a “called” pocket (a specific pocket they declare beforehand). Variations and Popularity Eight-ball has numerous regional variations, but it remains the most frequently played discipline of pool. It’s often synonymous with the term “pool” itself. Over time, standardized rules have been established, but competing sets of “official” rules still exist. So next time you’re at the pool hall, chalk up your cue stick, break the rack, and enjoy the timeless game of eight-ball! Remember, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual player, the magic of eight-ball lies in its simplicity, strategy, and the satisfying clack of balls against the felt. 🎱 Follow this link to see 8 ball international rules: https://www.sqebf.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/International-Eightball-Rules-Revision-2b-Jan-2023-A4-booklet.pdf [adrotate group=”1″] Views: 143
THE BEGINNINGS of the DAYTONA 500
[adrotate group=”1″] [wpcdt-countdown id=”15298″] 🏁 The Daytona 500 had its inaugural race on February 22, 1959, at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Here are some key moments from its early years: 1959: Lee Petty, the patriarch of the racing family, clinched victory in the first-ever Daytona 500. In a dramatic finish, he defeated Johnny Beauchamp in a highly unusual manner. The two were lapping Joe Weatherly at the finish line1. 1960: Junior Johnson employed the draft—a little-understood phenomenon at the time—to secure victory. He drove a slower, year-old car but used the draft to his advantage. The field consisted of a whopping 68 cars, making it the largest Daytona 500 lineup in history. Driver with the Most Wins When it comes to Daytona 500 victories, one name stands out: Richard Petty. The legendary driver has an impressive record of seven wins in this prestigious race. His dominance on the track and his iconic No. 43 car have left an indelible mark on Daytona 500 history. Fastest Speed Record In 1980, Buddy Baker achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Daytona 500 at an average speed of 177.602 miles per hour—a record that still stands as the fastest in the race’s history. Baker was also the first driver to break the 200 mph barrier on a closed course. His victory remains a testament to speed and skill on the high banks of Daytona. Fun Trivia Kurt Busch holds the distinction of leading the fewest laps (just one lap) and still winning the Daytona 500 in 2017. Matt Kenseth defied the odds by starting from the 39th position and emerging victorious in 2009. The slowest winning average speed belongs to Junior Johnson, who triumphed in 1960 with an average speed of 124.740 mph. The Daytona 500 continues to captivate fans, drivers, and racing enthusiasts alike. Its rich history and thrilling moments make it a true American racing spectacle. 🏎️💨 Views: 115
Excitement Unleashed: A Recap of the Thrilling 2024 NFL Wild Card Playoffs
[adrotate group=”1″] The 2024 NFL Wild Card Playoffs showcased a spectacular display of talent, determination, and nail-biting moments that left fans on the edge of their seats. As teams battled fiercely for a coveted spot in the divisional round, the intensity and drama unfolded on the gridiron. One of the standout matchups of the Wild Card weekend was the clash between the PITTSBURGH STEELERS and the BUFFALO BILLS The young and hungry contenders faced off against the established powerhouse in a showdown that defied expectations. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with momentum swinging back and forth throughout the four quarters. However tje more seasoned Buffalo Bills came out on top by 13 points In another riveting contest, two closely matched teams went head-to-head in a WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED Both teams coming in with identical records. The KC Chief showcased their prowess in preventing scoring opportunities, resulting in a low-score for the Miami Dolphins who managed to score a mere 7 points. KC Chiefs posted a 26-7 win. I see 2 standout moments in the Wild card playoff. One was the COLD weather in Kansas City, (which I believe had something to do ), with the shatteing of Chief’s QB, Patrick Mahomes helment. The other being the 76 yard TD by TEXANS TE, Brevin Jordan, and the posting on his locker, by the NFL, after the game to REPORT FOR A DRUG TEST ASAP. I for one was disappointed in the decision to to move the STEELERS/BILLSgame to Monday. I know I am not alone on this, as I have seen many postings down on the NFL for doing this, And, of course the usual dismal officiating. Also I must add is the NFL denied many fans the oppotunity to enjoy the DOLPHINS/CHIEFS game, All be it not too exciting. People ask why the NFL did this. GREED is the name of the game. As I understand it… PEACOCK paid $110,000,000.oo for the rights to broadcast the game. Off the field, the passionate fan base added to the spectacle. The electric atmosphere in the stadiums and the deafening roars, (Except the sparse crowd in bitter cold night game at KC) Don’t get me wrong,. I admire those fans that withstood the conditions, BUT as bundled up as they were, the cheers were “MUFFLED”. If you don’t understand the double meaning here ask one of your elders. The supporters created an environment that only the NFL playoffs can deliver. The Fans witnessed the birth of new heroes and celebrated the enduring legends who etched their names in the history books. In the end, the Wild Card Playoffs of 2024 lived up to the hype, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable postseason. As the remaining teams move forward, the excitement and anticipation for the upcoming games are palpable. Football enthusiasts can’t wait to see which team will emerge victorious and etch their name on the coveted Lombardi Trophy. The road to glory is paved with challenges, and the 2024 NFL playoffs have only just begun. Views: 98
