THE BEGINNINGS of the DAYTONA 500

[adrotate group=”1″] [wpcdt-countdown id=”15298″]   🏁 The Daytona 500 had its inaugural race on February 22, 1959, at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Here are some key moments from its early years: 1959: Lee Petty, the patriarch of the racing family, clinched victory in the first-ever Daytona 500. In a dramatic finish, he defeated Johnny Beauchamp in a highly unusual manner. The two were lapping Joe Weatherly at the finish line1. 1960: Junior Johnson employed the draft—a little-understood phenomenon at the time—to secure victory. He drove a slower, year-old car but used the draft to his advantage. The field consisted of a whopping 68 cars, making it the largest Daytona 500 lineup in history. Driver with the Most Wins When it comes to Daytona 500 victories, one name stands out: Richard Petty. The legendary driver has an impressive record of seven wins in this prestigious race. His dominance on the track and his iconic No. 43 car have left an indelible mark on Daytona 500 history. Fastest Speed Record In 1980, Buddy Baker achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Daytona 500 at an average speed of 177.602 miles per hour—a record that still stands as the fastest in the race’s history. Baker was also the first driver to break the 200 mph barrier on a closed course. His victory remains a testament to speed and skill on the high banks of Daytona. Fun Trivia Kurt Busch holds the distinction of leading the fewest laps (just one lap) and still winning the Daytona 500 in 2017. Matt Kenseth defied the odds by starting from the 39th position and emerging victorious in 2009. The slowest winning average speed belongs to Junior Johnson, who triumphed in 1960 with an average speed of 124.740 mph. The Daytona 500 continues to captivate fans, drivers, and racing enthusiasts alike. Its rich history and thrilling moments make it a true American racing spectacle. 🏎️💨 Views: 115

NCAA March Madness 2018

VILLANOVA 2018 NCAA CHAMPIONS. MICHIGAN    62          VILLANOVA  79  Notre Dame 61-58 over Mississippi State with a buzzer beating 3 pointer. 17 years after Notre Dames last National Championship…  NOTRE DAME 2018 NCAA Women’s CHAMIONSHIP !!! This gives the state of Indiana bragging rights.  Having teams win both NCAA and NIT Women Championships. IF Michigan can pull off the Win tomorrow night the Big Ten will have both NCAA Mens and Mens NIT Championship.  And a combined Men and women 3 National Champions in one year.  WE CAN ONLY WAIT AND SEE.  (I have no idea when OR if that has ever happened. Indiana Hoosier Women WIN WNIT 65-57  over  Virginia Tech Hokies Big 1o looking strong.  with two NIT Championships under their belt this year.    WILL Michigan be able to add the NCAA Championship to this list? Penn St Nittany Lions defeats Utah Utes 82-67.   WE ALL WAITED FOR IT .  AFTER ALL THESE YEARS A NUMBER 16 SEED UPSET A NUMBER 1.  NOT JUST ANY NUMBER 1.  THE OVERALL NUMBER  1 SEED.  AND BY 20 POINTS.  UMBC  UPSET VIRGINIA.  HOW ABOUT A BIG HAND FOR UMBC.  Can they go on and be a true “CINDERELLA” Team.  If they continue to play like they did today.  A real possibility. Alas the dream came to an end.  However, it may signal a new era of  parity in this Modern Era of  college basketball.  Seems we were treated, in the past few years with more 15 Seeds upsetting 2 seeds.  Now a 16 upsetting a 1 seed.   We will just have to wait and see, what the future brings. I can’t help wondering if anyone has a perfect bracket.  With only 2 number 1 seeds left; and 2 number 2 seeds left.  On the SOUTH bracket, we see highest seeds of  5 (Kentucky), and 7th seeded Nevada.  Remaining. The WEST  has a number 3 seed, (Michigan), and a number 4 seed (Gonzaga), yet on a possible quest to the FINAL FOUR.   The Right side, EAST, and MIDWEST, (for the most part), has pretty much remained intact, both with number 1 and number 2 seeds still in play. WELCOME TO OUR 2018 MARCH MADNESS.  I am not sure How many years we have been doing this.  I will have to look it up. (Pre-Blog days  Has been online since 1992) Warren Buffett has once again offered $1 million dollars for life to any of his employees who gets the final 16 correct.(there’s a 1 in 1.24X1064 chance of accurately predicting all 16 teams. ) Not everyone will go home empty-handed, though. Whichever employee’s bracket makes it the furthest in the tournament will win $100,000.  I wonder if anyone still has a chance to win it; NOW. This is where you can print your “OFFICE POOL” Bracket, Check the scores, etc. I will have A “MASTER BRACKET”,  “WHAT IF YOU CHOSE THE HIGH PICKS”  for each game.  An “UPSET BRACKET”  (if the favored team wins it will be in Green, if it is an upset it will be listed in RED”.  And, Yes I will have “MY PICKS” so you can compare your picks to mine. (And Laugh or Cry)  What is a seed?  Merely a starting place.  Although unlikely, IT is possible for two 16 seeds to meet in the final game.  Would lets say Michigan St  were to be seeded as a number 16.  They would still have  to win all games to be CHAMPION !    SEEDING attempts to give a more favored team an easier path to the CHAMPIONSHIP.  Seeding should lead to  the best 2 teams playing in the final game.  However there  is always that upset minded team;  or  the chance that the favored team has a bad game, a stand out player is sick or injured. Selection Sunday will be Sunday March 11, 2018.  At 6pm.  You can watch the Selections Live on TBS.  Something different this year.  ALL 68 teams will be announced at the beginning.  Teams will know if they are in or out before the seeding announcements. The First Four, (play in games), will be played March 13 and 14. On TRU tv.  All games will be played in Dayton Ohio.  Two games March 13. Two games March 14.   Time is to be determined later. To  print BRACKET:  HOVER OVER SHEET.  You will see a window at bottom with an arrow pointing down (second from right).  Click this button.  It will open a new window with the bracket then click the printer icon or go to file,  and PRINT.  Will only print in black and White. TO Enlarge each sheet: Hover over and select the square on the far bottom RIGHT. I think my sentimental favorite, right now has to First Time Ever entry the “BISONS” of LIPSCOMB ! I must say I am very disappointed, by the Selection Committee’s decision.  Placing Conference Champions in a play in position, while seeding others (with questionable credentials), in the set field. NCAA March Madness 2016

What a thrilling ending to the 2016 edition of MARCH MADNESS. North Carolina probably wishing the could have waited a couple of seconds for their final shot.  I didn’t do so well.  I DID however pick a number two seed to win (Michigan State); BUT it was a number two seed which won.  So I have to give myself  a half credit (?). It has been FUN.  I  plan to do this again next year.  Despite my troubles with CHROME.  It gave me fits in updating.  I would spend sometimes an hour updating just one bracket sheet.  Finally learned I had to clear my cache every time before I attempted to update anything. Be sure to check back regularly.  I don’t have any idea what I will write about….. NO! wait I have some idea.  Maybe some racing history. (If I can find the notes I made a couple years ago.  Also…. who knows. WELCOME TO OUR 2016 MARCH MADNESS.  I am not sure How many years we have been doing this.  I will have to look it up.   This is where you can print your “OFFICE POOL” Bracket, Check the scores, etc. I will have this “MASTER BRACKET”,  “WHAT IF YOU CHOSE THE HIGH PICKS”  for each game.  An “UPSET BRACKET”  (if the favored team wins it will be in Green, if it is an upset it will be listed in RED”.  And, Yes I will have my picks so you can compare your picks to mine. Reportedly there is a TEENAGE GIRL in Indiana who has only missed 3 games in this years bracket. She picked Texas over Northern Iowa.  California over Hawaii. Final game she had Syracuse over North Carolina.  Her Champion pick is……VILLANOVA. She says she does not follow Basketball regularly and has only attended a game or two at her high school.      Maybe this is proof the rest of us over think some things To  print BRACKET: Click on PRINT PDF button at top and select page with the bracket you want to print. ( If you do not see the “PRINT PDF” button.  Please go to the The Title “NCAA March Madness 2016”  and click to advance to the full post).  MASTER BRACKET [pdf-embedder url=”https://fromthemiddle.blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/2016-march-madness-MASTER-bracket.pdf”] ALL HIGH PICKS [pdf-embedder url=”https://fromthemiddle.blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/2016-march-madness-ALL-HIGH-PICKS-bracket.pdf”] UPSETS [pdf-embedder url=”https://fromthemiddle.blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/2016-march-madness-UPSETS-bracket.pdf”] MY PICKS [pdf-embedder url=”https://fromthemiddle.blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/2016-march-madness-MY-PICKS-bracket.pdf”]       Views: 107

Belated Super Bowl Wrap-up

I know it is rather late.  I have been busy doing some consulting work.  Then discovered had an issue with connection upon my return.  So this will be short and sweet. YES!!! Seattle Seahawks with Russell Wilson WON! I wish we had a better game.  With the top OFFENSE Vs. The top DEFENSE : We should have had a GREAT game.  However as I predicted the difference was the Defensive effort.  The Denver Broncos had that one blunder in the opening seconds of the game, which threw them in a tizzy.  Between that awkward start and the smothering defense of the Seahawks,  The Broncos could not recover. I do wish we had seen better showings by both Peyton Manning, and Montee Ball.  But neither got much chance to show their skills.   Seahawks defense all over them and every Bronco. Now the question is will we see key players from both or either team take advantage of their success this year, to enhance their PAYCHECK.   Unfortunately the day of loyalty is long past.  Few players have it.  I think Peyton Manning would have taken a pay cut to stay with the Indianapolis Colts.  Just one of the few LOYAL players around. Speaking of Mr. Manning:  I think he may have another year in him.  The question is this:  Is the desire still beating in his heart.  Little brother, has the Super Bowl bragging rights, but Peyton has all those records. I suppose we will just have to wait and see how this all unfolds. Congratulations to both teams for the exceptional season they put together That Is How I See It. P.S.  I know the Daytona NASCAR race is coming up.  But After all these years I could care less.  I usually just flip through the channels and catch glimpses of it.  Mike Helton and the powers behind him have ruined it for me. But we will be having our MARCH MADNESS  posts.  Look for them. Views: 105
