🧾 Discover the incredible story of Larry Yount of the Houston Astros — the only MLB pitcher credited with an appearance without throwing a pitch. Learn how his short-lived career connects to Hall of Famer Robin Yount. Introduction Baseball is a sport of legends, records, and unforgettable moments. Yet among the thousands who have stepped onto a Major League field, few stories are as fascinating — or as heartbreaking — as that of Larry Yount. A promising young pitcher for the Houston Astros, Larry’s MLB career consisted of just one appearance — and remarkably, not a single pitch thrown. His story has become a permanent part of baseball lore, one that highlights both the fragility and the beauty of the game. ⚾ From Woodland Hills to the Big Leagues Born February 15, 1950, in Woodland Hills, California, Larry Yount was a tall, right-handed pitcher drafted by the Houston Astros in the 5th round of the 1968 MLB Draft. He showed strong potential in the minors, with a smooth delivery and command that drew comparisons to some of the league’s rising arms. By 1971, his hard work paid off — he was called up to the majors to join the Astros’ pitching staff in September. 🏟️ September 15, 1971: The Debut That Never Was That night, at the Astrodome, the Astros faced the Atlanta Braves. Late in the game, the public address announcer declared: “Now pitching for Houston — Larry Yount.” It was a moment every pitcher dreams of. Yount jogged to the mound, soaking in the sound of the crowd. But during his warm-up tosses, something was wrong. His elbow — sore for weeks — tightened up. The pain became unbearable. Before facing a single batter, he signaled to the dugout and left the game. Because he had already been officially announced, Major League Baseball recorded the outing as an appearance — even though he never threw a pitch. It remains one of the most unusual official lines in MLB history: Larry Yount — 1 game, 0 innings pitched, 0 pitches thrown. 💔 After the Game That Ended Before It Began Yount spent several more years trying to work his way back, pitching in the minors and rehabbing his arm. Unfortunately, the injury persisted. By 1976, he retired from professional baseball without ever officially recording a pitch in the big leagues. Still, his name endures — not for failure, but for uniqueness. Larry Yount remains the only MLB pitcher ever credited with an appearance without throwing a pitch. 🧢An Aside: The Yount Baseball Legacy Larry’s story becomes even more remarkable when you consider his family ties. His younger brother, Robin Yount, would go on to become a Hall of Famer and one of the most respected players of his era. Robin spent his entire 20-year career with the Milwaukee Brewers, racking up 3,142 hits, two MVP Awards, and a Hall of Fame induction in 1999. While Larry’s career was fleeting, Robin’s greatness ensured the Yount name would live forever in baseball history. And the baseball legacy didn’t end there — Larry’s son, Austin Yount, later played professionally in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, making it a three-generation baseball family. ⚙️ Legacy of Larry Yount Larry Yount’s story is a powerful reminder that even a momentary appearance in the major leagues represents the pinnacle of hard work and perseverance. For every Robin Yount, there’s a Larry Yount — a player who poured his heart into the game, only to have fate intervene. Yet even in those fleeting moments, history can be made. Larry Yount may not have thrown a pitch, but he earned his place in the record books — and in the hearts of baseball fans who love the stories that make the game what it is. Children Sports Burn Out
Yes, too much of one sport can indeed lead to burnout in children. Burnout usually results from chronic stress and might manifest as physical or emotional exhaustion, reduced performance, feelings of cynicism or detachment, and a lack of accomplishment. Although it varies from child to child, typically, playing multiple games a week, and adding in practices as well as travel for tournaments on weekends can become overwhelming. This intense schedule can cause physical fatigue and mental stress. To avoid burnout: 1. Variety: Encourage your child to play different sports. This can help them develop diverse skills and prevent overuse injuries. 2. Breaks: Ensure that your child takes breaks during the season and has an off-season when they do not play any organized sport. 3. Balance: Balance their sports activities with other things they enjoy like hanging out with friends, hobbies or family time. 4. Limitation: A common recommendation is that children should not spend more hours a week than their age playing sports. For example, a 10-year-old should play no more than 10 hours per week. 5. Listen: Pay attention to your child’s feelings about their sport commitment – if they’re consistently feeling too tired or unmotivated to participate, it may be time to reduce the intensity of involvement. 6. Fun element: It’s important that playing sports remains fun for your child rather than being perceived as a chore or job. 7. Professional guidance: Seek advice from a coach or pediatrician if you worry about burnout or over-exercise. It’s important to remember that every child is unique – one size does not fit all when it comes to an appropriate schedule for sports participation. Views: 52
Lifetime Bans in Baseball: A Closer Look at the Scandals that Shook the Sport
IN MEMORY OF PETE ROSE (April 14, 1941-September 30, 2024) NOTE: The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is an independent, nonprofit educational institution. That being said it seems the MLB bans of any player is not binding!!! So why have players like Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson not been enshrined in the hall of fame. There records speak for their for them. (Anyone from the Baseball Hall of Fame care to respond). Now to our story. Though not an actual mystery, this article goes into detail about lifetime bans in Baseball and gives you a greater look into these bans and their outcomes. Baseball holds a special place in American culture, and with that comes a strong commitment to fair play and sportsmanship. When these values are compromised, Major League Baseball (MLB) does not hesitate to impose its harshest penalty—a lifetime ban. This punishment has been used sparingly throughout the history of the game but always for actions that threaten its integrity. Let’s take a deeper look into the most infamous lifetime bans in baseball history, the events leading to them, and their lasting impact. Pete Rose: The Gambling Scandal that Rocked Baseball Pete Rose, known as “Charlie Hustle,” is one of the most controversial figures in baseball. Over a 24-year career, he set the record for most hits (4,256), earning accolades and a reputation as one of the greatest players in history. However, Rose’s fall from grace came in 1989 when it was revealed that he had bet on baseball games, including those involving the Cincinnati Reds, a team he both played for and managed. (It is said he only bet FOR his team to win). An investigation led by MLB Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti concluded that Rose had placed bets on numerous baseball games from 1985 to 1987, including his own team’s games, though no evidence suggested he bet against the Reds. In a deal to avoid further legal action, Rose accepted a lifetime ban from baseball on August 24, 1989, without admitting to or denying the allegations. Rose’s ban barred him from managing, coaching, or holding any official role within MLB, and he became ineligible for induction into the Hall of Fame. Over the years, Rose has made several appeals for reinstatement, expressing remorse for his actions and eventually admitting in 2004 that he had bet on baseball. Despite his pleas, MLB has held firm, citing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game. The impact of Rose’s ban continues to be debated. Many fans believe his on-field accomplishments should be enough to warrant Hall of Fame induction, while others argue that his gambling offenses tarnish his legacy irreparably. The Rose case serves as a stark reminder of baseball’s strict no-tolerance policy toward gambling. The Black Sox Scandal: A World Series Tainted by Greed In 1919, baseball was rocked by one of its greatest scandals when eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of conspiring with gamblers to throw the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. The players involved, including legendary outfielder **Shoeless Joe Jackson**, accepted bribes from gamblers in exchange for underperforming in key moments of the series. The scandal came to light after rumors of the fix spread throughout the season, leading to an investigation. The eight players, known as the “Black Sox,” were indicted by a grand jury in 1920, though they were acquitted of criminal charges. However, MLB’s newly appointed Commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, was determined to restore the public’s faith in the game and permanently banned all eight players from baseball, regardless of the court’s decision. Shoeless Joe Jackson’s involvement remains a subject of controversy. Despite his incredible .375 batting average during the series and his claims of innocence, Jackson was still banned for life. Many believe Jackson was not fully complicit in the plot and was manipulated by his teammates and the gamblers. Still, Landis’ decision to ban him solidified Jackson’s exclusion from baseball history, including the Hall of Fame. The Black Sox Scandal is often seen as a turning point for MLB. It led to the establishment of the Commissioner’s Office, created to protect the integrity of the game. The scandal also fueled a more stringent approach to gambling and a zero-tolerance policy toward any behavior that could compromise the fairness of competition. Performance-Enhancing Drugs (PEDs): A Modern-Day Scourge The following bans I agree with 100%, and should be MLB Lifetime, because they were out and out CHEATING. While the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) became a major issue in baseball in the 1990s and 2000s, MLB’s policies regarding drug violations were initially less stringent. However, after repeated scandals involving high-profile players, the league adopted a tough stance that includes the possibility of lifetime bans for multiple offenses. The MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program mandates increasing punishments for players caught using PEDs. A first offense results in an 80-game suspension, a second offense leads to a 162-game suspension (a full season), and a third offense results in a lifetime ban. Although no player has yet been banned after three offenses, the threat of permanent exclusion serves as a strong deterrent. Some of the most famous players involved in PED scandals include Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds. Rodriguez was suspended for the entire 2014 season due to his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal, but he narrowly avoided a lifetime ban. Bonds, though never banned, faced legal challenges and public scrutiny due to allegations of steroid use during his career. The legacy of PED use in baseball has left a cloud over an entire generation of players, some of whom would have been Hall of Fame candidates if not for their association with drugs. MLB’s aggressive anti-drug policies reflect its commitment to maintaining a level playing field, and while lifetime bans for PEDs are rare, the policy underscores the seriousness with which the league treats drug violations. Assault and Misconduct: Off-the-Field Actions with On-the-Field Consequences While gambling and PEDs are more common reasons… Continue reading Lifetime Bans in Baseball: A Closer Look at the Scandals that Shook the Sport

The Native American Mascot GENOCIDE !!
GENOCIDE The DELIBERATE and SYSTEMATIC EXTERMINATION of a National, Political, Racial, or CULTURAL GROUP. It appears to me the “MEDIA”, has triggered a movement to eradicate the MEMORY, of our Native American Culture. We now see few movies featuring the “INDIAN”. Westerns we all watched, most of the time, featured the Indian in a fashion that could be interpreted in a bad light. The Massacre of Custer’s troops. Attacking wagon trains, etc. etc. Then we also had the ones which showed the other side the “Indians” who worked as Scouts for the Calvary. SACAGAWEA, Who was instrumental in the movement to push the boundaries of the United States to the Pacific Ocean. Without her, the USA may have ended at the Mississippi River. Let’s not forget the “INDIANS” who befriended the first SETTLERS, and saved their live by teaching them how to grow keeps in this “Untamed Land”. We had Tonto, faithful companion to The Lone Ranger, NOT just a companion, BUT actually his life saver. And many more. In reality many of us wanted to be the “INDIAN” when we played Cowboys and “INDIANS”. We admired the family values, they depicted. We appreciated their courage. Their tenacity to hold on to their Land and way of LIFE. WHO? Among us would not FIGHT to defend our LAND, OUR WAY OF LIFE. We took away their Land, Food, and most likely their dignity. We moved them around, for our convenience. Put them on little parcels of land called RESERVATIONS. Before we came this whole country was theirs. They welcomed us with open arms, and we treated them badly. Now the NCAA and PRO Sports, even our Primary Schools, are wanting to abolish the use of any reference of the “INDIAN”. I know of a small town about 20 miles from where I live, began as an “INDIAN” village. The school there taught them our ways, and took their name as the school’s nickname. Thanks to school consolidation, the town has only an elementary school, but still carries the “INDIAN” name. The meaning has several interpretations today, from the native name of a type of TREE, to what they called EELS. HISTORY LOST. But ask any of the alumni, or any of the townspeople. They are proud of the that name regardless of what it means. By removing the last remnants, the team NICKNAMES, and MASCOTS; the GENOCIDE, of our Native Americans will move closer to being nothing more than a footnote in history. These Mascots, (even if not exactly accurate), remind of the American Heritage. There were many Tribes. Few of us know more than a handful of their names. But with the Colleges, Pro, and Primary Schools, we find our last tributes, to the brave native people who settled here long before “”AMERICANS”‘, thought of coming here. What people are missing is this. The names were given with respect and admiration. Whether, like the nickname of the school previously mentioned, (remember the tree, or eel, or whatever it meant). Or a local tribe, or chief, or warrior. They remain as a reminder, lest we forget… If you have noticed I used quotation marks each time I wrote “INDIAN”. American should be used. The word “INDIAN” came about because Chris Columbus thought he was in INDIA. In conclusion, I think removing these last few reminders, of the REAL American, would be an absolute tragedy. ADULTS DESIRES GIVE BLACK EYE TO CHILDRENS DREAMS
I liken the hoax pulled by the ADULTS, behind the Chicago JACKIE ROBINSON WEST, LITTLE LEAGUE SCAM, as a form of child abuse. It is a shame when ADULTS, place their own pride, if you can call it that. Let’s say it is a shame when ADULTS, place their DESIRES, above the ideals founded behind something as noble as LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL. These ideals have been a long time basis for children to compete, and have fun all over the USA, as well as other countries. The sense of playing a game you love. Playing all out to overcome your opponent and get the “W”. But also enjoying the competition if you happen to get the “L”. Let me interject here. The one thing I hate in Sports is the word LOST. Few players are losers. Losers don’t leave all they have on the field of play. So it is one thing to get BEAT. Which means you gave it all you had, you just got out played. If you are a loser you know it, and you have to live with it. But if you get BEAT; keep your head up. Nothing to be ashamed of . Somewhere in the case of the Chicago Little League Organization, The adult leaders of this scam became lost. I don’t know if it was a money thing, (hoping to bring their area to the forefront, and amass some kind of new income for the area. Maybe their thinking was to gain some publicity for the program and maybe gain more backing for the area’s Little League Organization. I just don’t know what their thinking was. What I do know is the result was a big BLACK EYE for Chicago, Little League, and YES even our hero JACKIE ROBINSON. What a tragedy for all. But the biggest loss of all was the lain on the KIDS. The Kids who, I am sure were unaware of the way the the Adults behind the scam were using them. All the kids were good players, and seemed to be good sportsmen, (you always have one or two who, although truly good sports will let their exuberance get out of hand and appear to have a bad effect. You have this in all walks of life and at any age. But truly good sports regret it if they see it). I feel these kids most likely feel betrayed, by their adult leaders. Now instead of the adulation of many, these children will most likely feel the scorn, for the ACTIONS of the adults involved. Will those Adults? Most likely not. They will shed it like water off a ducks back. My Message to those kids, is BE BIGGER THAN THOSE adults. Learn from their mistakes and don’t repeat them. You were used as a tool for the EGOS of your Adult leaders. You will all be grown, and no one will think about your participation, only that there was a wonder team assembled, but by unscrupulous men. To the team who fell victim to the ruse. All I can say is I’m Sorry. We will never know if any one of the teams knocked out of competition by this scam, could have went on to win the “LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES”. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not taking anything away from the eventual Champions. They worked hard to get there, and they beat the Chicago team. I am aware of these things going on all over the place. I recall a few years ago witnessing it. It was a 12 year and under tournament. A team from Lexington Ky. came up and played. I can’t prove they were older. But most of them were 6 feet tall (at least). Some had mustaches. One had a little boy come up and (maybe called him Andy), but to the most of us around it sounded like Daddy. But boy could they hit. The game was played on an oversize field. These kids. many of them. were hitting one bouncers to the 308 foot left field fence. Needless to say they went undefeated through the tournament. In closing let me say the National Little League Association did all they could to atone for the mess. Let’s just hope everyone learned a lesson from this unfortunate event. That Is How I See It. SUPER BOWL XLIX FEB. 01, 2015
UPDATE: NFL has found 11 of the 12 balls used Sunday against the Colts, were indeed under inflated. I guess the Patriots were afraid of the Colts beating them. Not that they had to as it turned out. What punishment would be appropriate? We know the answer. FORFEIT TO THE COLTS. But they won’t go that far. Any thing less will be merely a slap on the wrist. After all the MARKETING MONIES, and PUBLICITY for advancing to the Super Bowl will way out weigh any other punishment. Suspension of William Stephen “Bill” Belichick. No problem. Given the teams history, they will most likely find a way for him to watch and get plays to the other coaches. Speaking of the other coaches, who have been with Belichick long enough to know how he would call the game any way. Maybe suspending QB Tom Brady, TE Rob Gronkowski, Place Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, Punter Ryan Allen, and of course RB LaGarrette Blount. But suspending players would not really be fair to those players or the rest of the team. What ever punishment handed should have a HUGE impact on the Patriots bottom line. HOW ABOUT Forfeiture of all income springing from their advancement to and including Their SUPER BOWL appearance. (excluding the players pay. Of Course). Plus any sanctions NFL chooses to place on Future Draft Picks, etc.etc. We all know MONEY is what PROFESSIONAL SPORTS IS ALL ABOUT! We have now reached the BIGGEST game of the season….. “SUPER BOWL” !!!!!. Two great teams, Two great Quarter Backs, with a great supporting cast. Yes the QB’s usually take the praise when his team wins. But he is also called upon to bear the burden when his team gets beat. Just like the Pitcher on a Baseball team. BUT, in FOOTBALL. There are many teams. Offense, Defense, Special Teams, Back up Player, Practice Teams, Coaching Team, and lets not forget that all important team……the 12 th man team. Everyone of these teams are just as important as the other. The OFFENSE, plays its game to MOVE the ball down field, and SCORE points. The DEFENSE, plays its game to STOP the movement down the field, and if the opportunity arises, STEAL the ball away. (Just like in Basketball). Then in semi-rare occasions SCORE points. Kind of makes it seem like the DEFENSE does most of the work and gets a passing note of praise, for a win. The SPECIAL TEAMS. Are a combination of OFFENSE and DEFENSE. They are the SPECIALISTS, as the name implies. They can return kickoffs, or receive punts, or play for the onside kick. They include the KICKERS, SETTERS, RETURNERS, and anything else they may be asked to do. The PRACTICE TEAM, is that unknown group, which plays one of the most important roles on the team. They don’t make the big money, the game time players make. (Perhaps $100,000.00 a a year). What many people don’t realize is the Practice Team must mimic every opponent their team may face in a season. After all, how would the Patriots practice against the Seahawks, and vice-versa. If you think that is easy, try being a different team every week. The BACK UP Team. The Subs, the Bench warmers. The men who sit on the sidelines hoping to someday get into a real game. They must be ready at any moment to enter the game and play up to the same standards as the starters. While on the sidelines they must be cheerleaders, spirit lifters, if you will. It can’t be easy waiting to get in a game, (most likely; even if un-concioiusly hoping for something to happen to the starter to afford them their chance), to be that support group. The Coaching Team. Held together by the HEAD COACH. Each coach has his speciality. They are the ones who decides the plays, trains the players, and inspires them to succeed. Of course if you ask any one of them HIS job is the most important coaching position on the team. But the Head coach is the one who acts as referee, and maintains the peace among this group. I’m sure the Offensive Co-ordinator, makes most of the offensive play calls, just as the Defensive Co-Ordinator, makes the decisions on defensive plays. Etc.Etc. on down the line. But the Head Coach is the ultimate decision maker. NOW. We come to that all important 12 th MAN TEAM. They are sometimes called the “Boosters”, because that is what they do. They give the team that extra BOOST. Cheering them on to work harder, Applauding them when they make good plays. Supporting the team by buying the game tickets, concessions, and the various souvenirs, and Team apparel. They make noise to drown out the opposing teams signals, and hush up so their team can be heard and on the same wavelength. On one hand you have the seasoned veteran, TOM BRADY. On the other hand you have that “undersized” QB, RUSSEL WILSON, who is in his THRD year. BUT…. by the way already has one Super Bowl Championship under his belt. HUH? Can that be right. The QB most teams thought was to short to play that position effectively? YEP. That be him. (Not to brag or anything. But if you check my post of Jan. 13, 2012. Colts 1st Round Draft Pick Is…. I had Wilson as a TOP 3 Pick: in my eyes the most capable of the three). Can he be the QB with 2 Super Bowl Championships in a career of 3 years. This should be the BEST Super Bowl in MANY years. But there is always that unknown phantom that can come in and just make the game a blow out. As my Dad, always said. “HOPE FOR THE BEST, AND EXPECT THE WORSE”. As of this writing the odds makers in Las Vegas, have made no move as to odds and who they think will win. Right now it is just… Continue reading SUPER BOWL XLIX FEB. 01, 2015
Parental Involvement After School
For millions of parents around the world, the day does not end with the school bell. There are still pictures to be painted, songs to be sung and games to be played. This all adds up to keeping children happy, safe and out of trouble. But, parents have to steer away from going overboard. After school is not baby-sitting: After school activities thrive only if it is backed by sufficient parental involvement. What would a baseball game be without parents cheering their little heroes from the sidelines?. Research and choose: Instead of convenience being the decisive factor, find out things that will interest your child. Once you select a program, get the fine print and find out what you have to contribute. Free time: Many children attend piano classes, followed by ballet and squeeze in some time for play dates in between just before they rush home in time for bed. This rigor is too much for a child. So, go slow. When to quit: Often, parents enroll their child in an activity to discover that he may not be the prodigy they thought he would be. This may be the time to let go. Your child may not become the next wonder-kid. But you must allow them to finish out their obligation to the team, etc. Today to many parents will tell their children to “just quit”. Or, perhaps, the family decides it is an inconvenience for them to let the child attend practice or games. Or maybe they plan a holiday and take the child away. This only enforces a “me” attitude. I can’t count the times I had to alter plans so the children could participate in their activities. I wanted them to learn about commitment. If they have committed to be a part of something. This is the time for them to learn to fulfill their obligations. But, let him cultivate an interest that he enjoys. Remember, happiness and fulfillment are all very important. Views: 234
Fair TAX???
As most sport fans know our professional sports players pay Federal Income Tax. They also pay State Tax. However did you know they pay the STATE TAX to the state they earn the money in. Not necessarily their home state. Let’s say a Eli Manning plays a game at Indianapolis. The money he earned for that game is taxed by the state of Indiana. (I can only assume local city, county, etc. taxes are also collected). Can you imagine the tax nightmare? Does he have to prepare a tax form for every state he earns money. Does this include personal appearances also? But here comes the rub. I recently read..Pius Heinz, a German poker player won $8,715,636.oo in the WORLD SERIES OF POKER, in Las Vegas TAX FREE !!!! Martin Stazko of the Czech Republic the second place finisher won $5,433,080.oo. Neither of these men will pay tax on any of this 14 million plus earnings. However third place winner, Ben Lamb a resident of the good old USA will have to pay approximately $1,524,011.oo on his $4,021039.oo Fourth place finisher Mark Gianetti, another USA Citizen won $3,012,700.oo but will have to surrender $1,524,642.oo to the Federal Government. Granted the 2 nd place winner will have to pay taxes in his native Czech Republic. Due to Germany’s tax exempt gambling law, Herr Heinz will pay NO TAXES. That is almost $14 million of U.S. Currency leaving the country, with no return to our treasury. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this? I sure do. This Is How I See It. Views: 893
Crushable Hat
I recently bought a new Hat. I don’t know what category it would fit in. I rarely wear a hat, exceptions have usually been while playing softball, watching baseball games, or if it is raining or snowing. My reasoning for wearing it if it is raining or snowing is really quite simple. It helps keep the rain or snow from getting on my glasses. One day this fall it was raining and of course I had my baseball cap on. (To keep the rain off my glasses). But as it kept pouring I noticed the rain running down the back of my neck. It just happens I was visiting my local TSC (Tractor Supply Company) store. I was actually looking for some tools, when I passed a display of hats. This one struck me as being just the thing I needed to keep the rain off the back of my neck and off my glasses. IT WORKS! The only bad part is keeping it on in the wind. Now the problem I have is the tag on the hat stated it was GUARANTEED CRUSHABLE Now I’m at a loss the tag didn’t state the exact meaning of the guarantee. So I don’t know if it meant the hat was guaranteed to CRUSH! Or did it mean the hat was guaranteed to retake it’s form in the event it accidently becomes crushed. I’m sort of leaning toward the first CRUSH. But hopefully no one will sit on it and I won’t find out. I’ll let you know which way the guarantee meant. If it gets crushed.
