Clash of Titans: Duke vs. Houston – A 2025 NCAA SEMI- FINAL Showdown for the Ages By Artie Fichal On April 5th, 2025, under the bright lights of State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the college basketball world witnessed an unforgettable battle between two powerhouse programs: the perennial blue-bloods, Duke Blue Devils, and the defensive juggernauts, Houston Cougars. A game filled with shifting momentum, individual heroics, and tactical brilliance, this national championship became an instant classic. Let’s relive every heart-pounding moment from tip-off to final buzzer. Pregame Hype and Background Coming into the game, both teams had cut through their brackets with authority. Duke, led by sophomore phenom Jalen Blake Jr. and coached by Jon Scheyer in his third full season, had taken down Kansas and Tennessee in a ruthless path to the Final Four. Their mixture of five-star talent and deep bench rotation had them clicking at the right time. Houston, on the other hand, came in with a chip on their shoulder. With Coach Kelvin Sampson still at the helm, the Cougars played suffocating defense and had a backcourt tandem in Jamal Sharp and Terrence Walker that terrorized opponents. Their upset of #1 seed Purdue in the Elite Eight and gritty win over Arizona in the Final Four showed they were more than ready. This wasn’t just a game—it was a battle for legacy, pride, and a permanent place in college hoops history. First Half: A Blitz from Both Sides Opening Tip (20:00–18:00) The game began with Duke winning the tip, and within 20 seconds, Blake Jr. nailed a pull-up three from the top of the key—setting the tone early. But Houston answered just as quickly, with Walker slicing through Duke’s defense for a tough and-one layup. Score: 3–3 Early Pace and Turnovers (18:00–14:00) Both teams came out with energy, but Houston’s pressure defense started causing problems. Duke committed four turnovers in the opening six minutes, two from errant passes trying to break Houston’s trap. Yet, Houston struggled to capitalize offensively, missing three open corner threes. Their only consistent scorer early was Walker, who had 9 of Houston’s first 13 points. Meanwhile, Duke’s Caleb Foster, known more for his defense, came up huge with a corner three and a slick assist to Mark Mitchell on a fast break dunk. Score: Duke 15 – Houston 13 Mid-Half Run: Duke Finds Rhythm (14:00–8:00) With Houston struggling to find consistent offense outside of Walker, Duke took advantage. Blake Jr. and freshman big man TJ Jefferson executed a perfect pick-and-pop, resulting in a three. Next possession, Jefferson grabbed an offensive board and slammed it back with authority. Then, came the highlight: an alley-oop from Blake Jr. to Mitchell that had the crowd erupting. Duke goes on a 9–2 run. Score: Duke 26 – Houston 17 Houston Fights Back (8:00–4:00) Coach Sampson made a key switch, bringing in senior forward Quincy Davis, who provided instant energy—drawing a charge on one end and hitting a midrange jumper on the other. Their full-court press started to wear Duke down again. Two steals led to back-to-back dunks from Sharp, and suddenly the Cougars were back in it. Score: Duke 30 – Houston 27 Closing Minutes Before Halftime (4:00–00:00) The final four minutes before halftime were pure chaos. Both teams pushed the tempo. Jefferson blocked a Sharp layup, which turned into a fast break dunk for Duke. But on the next possession, Houston responded with a banked-in three from Walker at the shot clock buzzer. Then, with just 11 seconds before the half, Blake Jr. crossed over Sharp, stepped back, and hit a DEEP three from NBA range. The building shook. Halftime Score: Duke 42 – Houston 38 Halftime Analysis At the break, analysts were buzzing about Blake Jr.’s 15-point first half and Houston’s tenacious defense. Despite trailing, the Cougars had forced 9 Duke turnovers and held them to just 3-of-10 from beyond the arc outside of Blake’s heroics. Key First Half Stats: Jalen Blake Jr. (Duke): 15 pts, 4 ast TJ Jefferson (Duke): 8 pts, 7 reb, 2 blk Terrence Walker (Houston): 14 pts, 2 stl Turnovers: Duke 9 – Houston 4 Second Half: The Tides Turn Opening Surge (20:00–17:00) Houston came out blazing. They scored on their first three possessions—a three from Sharp, a floater from Davis, and a dunk in transition from Walker. Duke looked rattled. Houston goes on a 9–2 run to take the lead. Score: Houston 47 – Duke 44 Scheyer Responds (17:00–15:36 Coach Scheyer called a timeout and made an adjustment, bringing in veteran guard Jaylen Roach to stabilize the offense. It worked. Roach hit a floater, then drew a foul on a drive, knocking down both free throws. On defense, Jefferson had a massive block on Davis, sending the ball into the stands. Score: Duke 52 – Houston 51 Here’s the detailed breakdown of the second half, continuing from where we left off: Second Half: A Championship Battle for the Ages Houston’s Defensive Stranglehold (15:36–14:00) With Houston up 51-50, the Cougars turned up the defensive pressure. Kelvin Sampson’s squad executed their famous full-court press to perfection. Duke’s Jaylen Roach struggled to break through the aggressive double-teams, leading to two consecutive turnovers. On the other end, Jamal Sharp drove into the lane, absorbed contact, and finished a tough layup over Duke’s TJ Jefferson. Next possession, Quincy Davis tipped an offensive rebound back to Walker, who drained a deep three from the left wing. The Houston fans erupted as their squad took their largest lead of the night. Score: Houston 58 – Duke 52 Blake Jr. Responds (14:00–12:47) Duke was on the ropes, but Jalen Blake Jr. refused to back down. COLLEGE TRANSFER PORTAL AND NIL AFFECTS ON SPORTS
The NCAA transfer portal, introduced in 2018, has significantly reshaped college athletics by providing student-athletes with a streamlined process to change schools. This system, combined with the advent of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights, has led to increased player mobility and altered the dynamics of college sports programs nationwide. IMPACT ON COLLEGE ATHLETIC PROGRAMS The transfer portal has facilitated a notable increase in athlete transfers across various sports. In 2022, approximately 13% of all Division I student-athletes entered the transfer portal, with 7% successfully transferring to another NCAA program. Specifically, men’s basketball saw 1,649 athletes enter the portal, with 1,123 securing transfers to other NCAA schools . This heightened mobility has prompted athletic programs to adapt their recruitment and retention strategies, placing greater emphasis on both incoming transfers and the development of existing talent. TRANSFERS MOTIVATED BY NIL OPPORTUNITIES The introduction of NIL rights has allowed college athletes to monetize their personal brands, influencing transfer decisions. While precise data on the percentage of athletes transferring primarily for enhanced NIL opportunities is limited, anecdotal evidence suggests that financial incentives play a significant role. The transfer portal has become a tool for athletes to seek better NIL deals, with some using the possibility of transferring as leverage to renegotiate terms with their current institutions . IMAGINED FUTURE 0F COLLEGE SPORTS The combination of the transfer portal and NIL rights is expected to continue transforming college athletics. Powerhouse programs may strengthen further by attracting top talent seeking better exposure and financial opportunities, potentially diminishing the prevalence of “Cinderella” stories in tournaments. For instance, the 2025 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s Sweet 16 featured only teams from power conferences, a shift attributed to the transfer portal and NIL deals consolidating talent at wealthier schools . This trend raises concerns about competitive balance and the evolving nature of college sports. COACHES’ OPIONIONS ON THE TRANSFER PORTAL Coaches have expressed mixed feelings about the transfer portal. While some acknowledge the benefits of increased flexibility for athletes, others are concerned about roster stability and the challenges of team building. The ease of transferring has led to a more dynamic and, at times, unpredictable recruiting environment, requiring coaches to continually adapt their strategies. FANS’ OPINION ON THE TRANSFER PORTAL Fans’ reactions to the transfer portal are varied. Some appreciate the empowerment of student-athletes and the excitement brought by new talent joining their favorite teams. Others lament the perceived erosion of team loyalty and the potential weakening of traditional rivalries. The shifting landscape has sparked debates about the essence of college sports and the balance between athlete rights and maintaining the integrity of collegiate competitions. In conclusion, The transfer portal and NIL rights have ushered in a new era for college athletics, characterized by increased player movement and evolving program dynamics. As stakeholders navigate these changes, ongoing discussions will be essential to address the challenges and opportunities presented by this transformed landscape. Views: 0

NCAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2024 ND vs OSU
The 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship is set to feature a thrilling matchup between the No. 8 seed Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 7 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game is scheduled for January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Team Overviews: Ohio State Buckeyes: After a regular-season loss to Michigan, the Buckeyes have demonstrated resilience, advancing through the playoff bracket with decisive victories over Tennessee and Oregon, and a 28-14 win against Texas in the semifinals. Their defense has been particularly formidable, highlighted by defensive end Jack Sawyer’s 83-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Texas. Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Since an early-season upset by Northern Illinois, Notre Dame has been on a 13-game winning streak, showcasing a robust defense that ranks second nationally, allowing just 14.3 points per game. Their playoff journey included victories over Indiana, Georgia, and a narrow 27-24 win against Penn State in the semifinals. Key Matchups to Watch: Quarterback Play: Ohio State‘s Will Howard and Notre Dame‘s Riley Leonard, both transfers, have been instrumental in their teams’ successes. Howard‘s connection with receiver Jeremiah Smith has been particularly effective, while Leonard has provided stability and leadership for the Irish offense. Defensive Strengths: Both teams boast top-tier defenses. Ohio State leads the nation in yards and points allowed, with standout players like safety Caleb Downs and cornerbacks Denzel Burke and Davison Igbinosun. Notre Dame‘s defense has been equally impressive, consistently limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities. Betting Odds and Predictions: As of January 11, Ohio State is favored by 9.5 points over Notre Dame, with an over/under of 46.5 points. Analysts suggest that while Ohio State‘s offense is potent, Notre Dame‘s defensive capabilities could keep the game competitive. Some experts recommend considering Notre Dame against the spread, anticipating a closer contest than the odds might indicate. Game Outlook: The championship game is expected to be a defensive battle, with both teams relying on their strong defensive units to control the game’s tempo. Turnovers and key defensive plays could be pivotal in determining the outcome. While Ohio State‘s offense has been explosive, Notre Dame‘s resilience and ability to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes make them a formidable challenger. Prediction: Given both teams’ defensive prowess, the game is likely to be a low-scoring affair. Ohio State‘s recent offensive performances suggest they may have a slight edge, but Notre Dame‘s momentum and determination to secure their first national title since 1988 cannot be underestimated. A final score in the vicinity of Ohio State 24, Notre Dame 17 is plausible, with the possibility of overtime if both defenses dominate as expected. Views: 34

PSA: HOW TO STAY WARM and SAFE WITH SPACE HEATERS
Winter is here, and many of us are looking for ways to keep our homes cozy and comfortable. Space heaters can be a great option for adding some extra warmth to a specific room or area, but they also come with some potential hazards. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), space heaters are responsible for more than 25,000 residential fires and 300 deaths annually. To avoid becoming a statistic, it’s important to follow some basic safety tips when using a space heater. Choose the Right Space Heater for Your Needs: There are different types of space heaters available, such as ceramic, mica, oil-filled, and infrared heaters. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the size and layout of your space, the level of noise you can tolerate, and the amount of energy you want to save. For example, ceramic heaters are good for heating up a small spot quickly, but they can get very hot and noisy. Mica heaters are energy-efficient and silent, but they need to be mounted on a wall. Oil-filled heaters are quiet and can heat up a whole room, but they are also very hot to the touch and take longer to warm up. Infrared heaters are cool to the touch and use beam heat to direct warmth, but they don’t heat up the air in the room. Before you buy a space heater, do some research and compare the features and ratings of different models. Look for safety features such as a thermostat, overheat protection, and a tip-over switch that turns the heater off if it falls over. You can also check the reviews and recommendations from Consumer Reports to find the safest and most reliable space heaters on the market. Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions and Warnings: Once you have your space heater, make sure to read the manual carefully and follow the instructions for proper use and maintenance. Inspect the heater for any damage, such as loose wires, cracked plugs, or broken parts. If you find any, replace the heater or have it repaired by a professional. Don’t try to fix it yourself, as you may cause more harm than good. Always plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet, and avoid using extension cords or power strips, as they can overheat and cause a fire. Don’t plug any other electrical devices into the same outlet as the heater, and keep the cord away from foot traffic and flammable materials. Unplug the heater when it’s not in use, and pull the plug straight from the outlet. Don’t yank the cord or leave it dangling. Keep a Safe Distance from Anything That Can Burn: One of the most common causes of space heater fires is placing the heater too close to combustible materials, such as furniture, bedding, curtains, clothing, or paper. The NFPA recommends keeping a minimum of 3 feet of clearance around the heater, and never putting it on a table, chair, bed, or carpet. Place the heater on a hard, level, and nonflammable surface, such as a tile floor or a metal stand. Also, keep the heater away from children and pets, who may be curious or playful and knock it over or burn themselves. Never leave the heater unattended, especially in a child’s room or a bathroom. Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed, and don’t use it as a dryer for your clothes or shoes. Install and Test Smoke Alarms in Your Home: Finally, make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every bedroom, and test them monthly. Smoke alarms can alert you to a fire and give you time to escape. Replace the batteries at least once a year, and replace the whole unit every 10 years. You can also install carbon monoxide alarms, which can detect a deadly gas that may be produced by faulty or poorly vented heaters. Space heaters can be a convenient and cost-effective way to stay warm this winter, but they also require caution and care. By following these safety tips, you can enjoy the benefits of a space heater without putting yourself or your family at risk. Stay warm and stay safe! [adrotate group=”1″] Views: 45
Gravity’s Dance: A Tale of Upside-Down Worlds
Memorial Day weekend gave me too much time to think. As evidenced in this post. I, for some reason thought…..I live in the Northern Hemisphere. Which kind of puts me on the top half of the world, explaining why gravity works the way it does. If i were to be suspended in mid air and released I would fall down, Using this logic, I began wondering, “If I was standing on the surface of Antarctica I would actually be standing “upside down”. Gravity would still be holding me on earth, but if suspended in mid air instead of falling down, I would fall up, to space, instead of down to Earth . I understand the gravitational pull would still be enough to Earths surface, even if I were to jump out of a perfectly good plane I would technically fall up to Earth. Leading me to believe that gravity is stronger in the Southern Hemisphere. Now my second thought was why, when standing upside down would I not have that sensation. I would feel the normal feeling of standing upright as I would in the North. In the vast cosmic ballroom, where spacetime waltzes with matter, gravity orchestrates a dance that transcends mere physics. Imagine, if you will, a celestial soirée where the Earth, the grand hostess, extends her arms – the fabric of spacetime – to embrace all who tread upon her. Whether you pirouette in the northern hemisphere or twirl near the icy expanse of Antarctica, gravity’s invisible hand guides your every step. The Curvature of Spacetime: Albert Einstein, the cosmic choreographer, revealed the secret steps of this universal ballet. In 1915, he unveiled his magnum opus: the theory of general relativity. Picture spacetime as a vast, taut canvas, stretched across the cosmic stage. Mass and energy – the prima ballerinas – bend and curve this fabric, creating dips and valleys. Earth herself, with her majestic girth, molds spacetime into a gentle concavity. This curvature, my dear reader, is what we perceive as gravity. The Trampoline of Reality: Imagine a colossal trampoline, its surface flat until you step upon it. Your mass – your very essence – stretches the fabric, creating a gravity well. Like a valley, it cradles you at its center. Objects nearby, like marbles on this cosmic trampoline, roll toward your feet. Earth, too, bows to this gravitational choreography, pulling you ever downward. But here’s the twist: time, too, bends in this cosmic dance. Astronauts, those celestial dancers, age just a tad more slowly as they pirouette through spacetime. The Upside-Down Tango: Now, let us pirouette to Antarctica, where the icy winds whisper secrets of the southern skies. Gravity, unyielding in its devotion, still clasps you to the icy ground. You, my friend, are hanging upside down – a celestial bat suspended from the cosmic rafters. Yet, your senses betray you. Your inner gyroscope insists you stand upright, as if gravity were a steadfast partner leading you through life’s grand promenade. The Visual Illusion: Ah, but here’s the twist: your eyes, those cosmic mirrors, deceive you. When you gaze upon the horizon, the visual gravity vector – the “down” your eyes perceive – aligns with the physical gravity of Earth. Even in Antarctica, your retinas insist on this cosmic agreement. The tilted monitor, the weightlessness of space – these are but variations in the choreography. Your brain, that maestro of perception, harmonizes the vestibular estimates of physical gravity into an internalized waltz of virtual gravity. The Grand Finale: And so, my fellow dancers, whether you pirouette in the north or tango in the south, gravity’s embrace remains unwavering. It whispers, “You are grounded, tethered to this cosmic ballroom.” Spacetime, that ethereal fabric, cradles you – the grand finale of a celestial ballet. So, dance, my friend, with feet firmly planted and eyes to the stars. For gravity, that silent maestro, conducts our eternal pas de deux. And thus concludes our cosmic tale – to unravel the enigma of gravity. As you step back into the mundane, remember: you are both dancer and dance, twirling through spacetime’s grand ballroom. Mothers Day History
Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring motherhood, and it is celebrated in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Anna Jarvis hailed from West Virginia, and her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, was her inspiration for creating the holiday. Ann Reeves Jarvis was a community health advocate who formed clubs known as “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to help local women learn how to properly care for their children. After her mother’s death in 1905, Anna sought a way of honoring her mother’s efforts. She conceived Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. Anna wanted it to be an intimate day of celebration between mothers and families. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one’s mother or attending church services. The original date selected by Anna was the second Sunday in May because that was close to her own mother’s death anniversary. It has remained so ever since (for U.S.A). By virtue of much lobbying, she finally convinced President Woodrow Wilson to set aside the second Sunday in May as a national holiday – Mother’s day, which she did in 1914. However, over time as commercialization increased around this special day with businesses profiting through sales of cards, gifts and flowers, Anna became disillusioned with what the commemoration had become. She spent much effort later trying to remove the holiday from the national calendar but failed. The average sum a person is expected to spend will be a little over $250. It is expected the total, (for USA), children and grandchildren will spend about $33 billion, ($33,000,000,000.oo), on Mom and Grandma this year. Mother’s Day continues to this day to be one of the major holidays in America where people still continue with tradition such as presenting flowers and other tokens of love to their mothers. In other parts of the world too like UK and parts of Europe ‘Mothering Sunday’ is celebrated which has religious roots associated with it but eventually has also become synonymous with honoring mothers. It’s usually celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. But the essence remains the same across all countries – a special day dedicated to acknowledge the efforts and contributions of mothers. 🇲🇽 Until a few years ago I had never heard of CINCO de MAYO. I decided it was time I learned more about it and why is it marked as a holiday on my calendar. This is what I found on this subject. Cinco de Mayo, which means the fifth of May in Spanish, is a holiday that celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War on May 5, 1862. It’s a relatively minor holiday in Mexico but has evolved into a significant commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage in the United States. Cinco de Mayo originated in the aftermath of the aforementioned battle. The Mexicans were greatly outnumbered and ill-equipped against one of the world’s most powerful armies, yet they managed to triumph. This unexpected victory against overwhelming odds became a source of pride for Mexico and symbolized resistance against foreign domination. The first Cinco de Mayo was celebrated soon after the battle itself, so its first official date would be May 5, 1862. If we calculate from then to 2024, it will mark the 162nd anniversary of Cinco de Mayo. The holiday was started by Mexicans who wanted to celebrate their country’s unexpected victory over France at Puebla. Over time, Mexican immigrants to the United States began celebrating it as well, especially in areas with large Mexican-American populations like California and Texas. Cinco de Mayo celebrations typically involve parades, music, folkloric dancing, and traditional foods like tacos and mole poblano. In many U.S. cities — notably including Los Angeles; Chicago; and Houston — massive festivities are organized every year featuring live music, parades and various events celebrating Mexican culture. However, it is important to note that Cinco de Mayo is often mistakenly thought of as Mexico’s Independence Day by people unfamiliar with its history — that is actually celebrated on September 16. It is also not widely observed across all regions of Mexico but rather primarily recognized in Puebla where the original victory occurred. After learning all this I just had to find out what mole poblano, (doesn’t sound appetizing: come on now MOLES the little creature that burrows underground). From what I can find out “MOLE”, covers many different kind of sauces. Poblano is a thick and savory chile and chocolate sauce from the state of Pueblo. May be delicious, but I don’t think I would try it chile and chocolate just don’t go together in my mind. Happy “Cinco de Mayo’ 🇲🇽 Artie Fischal Views: 120
