COLON CANCER is a silent threat that often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. It’s the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Early detection through a colonoscopy can save lives, making it a crucial procedure for adults, especially those over the age of 50 or with a family history of the disease. A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that allows doctors to look inside the entire large intestine. It helps find ulcers, colon polyps, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding. During the procedure, a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) is inserted into the rectum. A tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon. Why is a Colonoscopy Important? Early Detection: Colonoscopies can detect precancerous polyps that can be removed before they turn into cancer. Prevention: Removing polyps can prevent colon cancer, as most colon cancers develop from polyps. Peace of Mind: Knowing your colon is free of polyps can give you peace of mind. Treatment: If cancer is found, treatment can start immediately, increasing the chance of a successful outcome. When Should You Get a Colonoscopy? The American Cancer Society, recommends that people at average risk of colorectal cancer start regular screening at age 45. However, those with a family history of colon cancer or polypsmay need to start screening earlier. What to Expect During a Colonoscopy? Preparation: You will need to clean out your colon before the procedure. This usually involves following a special diet and taking laxatives. Procedure: The procedure itself usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes. You’ll be given medication to help you relax and might not remember the procedure afterward. Recovery: You will need someone to take you home because of the sedatives used during the procedure. You might experience some cramping or bloating, but this usually subsides quickly. Overcoming the Fear Many avoid colonoscopies due to fear of discomfort or embarrassment. However, the procedure is not painful, and the staff is professional and respectful. The benefits far outweigh any temporary discomfort. Take Action If you’re over 45 or at higher risk, talk to your doctor about scheduling a colonoscopy. It’s a decision that could save your life. Remember, colon cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable, but only if you take the necessary steps to detect it early. This PSA is a reminder that preventive healthcare is one of the most significant steps you can take for your long-term health. Don’t let fear or hesitation stand in the way of a procedure that could very well save your life. Schedule your colonoscopy today. VALENTINE’S DAY: A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
[adrotate group=”1″]\ Remember to get your sweetie something for Valentine’s Day ! Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love and affection, has a rich history that spans centuries. Let’s embark on a journey through its past and explore how it has evolved into the cherished day we know today. Ancient Origins The origins of Valentine’s Day can be traced back to ancient Rome. It was celebrated as Lupercalia, a fertility festival held in mid-February. During Lupercalia, young men would draw names of women from an urn, and the chosen pairs would be companions for the duration of the festival. The festival also honored Juno, the goddess of marriage and women. Christian Influence The Christianization of Lupercalia led to the association with St. Valentine, a priest who defied Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriage for soldiers. St. Valentine secretly performed marriages for soldiers and their beloveds, leading to his martyrdom on February 14. His acts of love and sacrifice became the foundation for Valentine’s Day. Medieval Courtly Love In the Middle Ages, courtly love poetry flourished. Knights and troubadours composed romantic verses for their ladies. Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem “Parliament of Fowls” mentioned Valentine’s Day as a day for birds to choose their mates. The idea of expressing love through written messages gained popularity. Victorian Era Sentiments The Victorian era saw the rise of elaborate Valentine’s cards adorned with lace, ribbons, and sentimental verses. Lovers exchanged these intricate cards, often expressing their deepest emotions. The tradition of sending valentines became widespread. Modern Celebrations Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated globally. Couples exchange gifts, flowers, and heartfelt messages. It’s not limited to romantic love; friends and family also express their affection. Whether it’s a candlelit dinner, a handwritten note, or a simple hug, the essence remains the same: celebrating love. In the present day, Valentine’s Day transcends borders, cultures, and generations. It’s a reminder to cherish our connections, express gratitude, and celebrate the beautiful tapestry of love that binds us all. SUPER BOWL LVIII RECAP FROM ALLEGIANT STADIUM LAS VEGAS
[adrotate group=”1″]\ 🏈 In a thrilling showdown at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the San Francisco 49ers. SCORING SUMMARY The 49ers’ Jake Moody nailed a 55-yard FG in the 2nd quarter. This gave the 99th overall pick, ROOKIE, the record for longest FG, in SUPER BOWL HISTORY. The CHIEFS’l Harrison Butker made successful field goals from 28 and 57 yd FG in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. (This 57 yd FG erased the previous record set by Rookie Jake Moody in the 2nd quarter. The 49ers’ Brock Purdy found Juan Jennings for a 10 yard TD in the 4th quarter. (You remember Brock Purdy…Mr Irrelevent. He has proved himself to have been grossly overlooked by the rest of the NFL teams during the draft). Both teams traded field goals in overtime, but the CHIEFS secured victory with a 3-yard touchdown by Mecole Hardman. (Side note: Hardman’s full name is Carey Mecole Hardman Jr). GAME STATISTICS: CHIEFS: Total Yards (455), Passing Yards (325), Rushing Yards (130), Turnovers (2). 49ers: Total Yards (382), Passing Yards (272), Rushing Yards (110), Turnovers (2). PSA: Stay Safe in Cold Weather!
[adrotate group=”1″] As the temperature drops, it’s crucial to prioritize your safety in cold weather. Follow these tips to protect yourself and others during chilly days: Layer Up: Dress in layers to trap warm air close to your body. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating layer, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Cover Exposed Skin: Don’t forget to protect your extremities. Wear hats, gloves, and scarves to prevent heat loss through exposed areas like your head, hands, and neck. Stay Dry: Wet clothing can make you lose body heat rapidly. Ensure your outer layer is waterproof to keep rain and snow at bay. Change into dry clothes if you get wet. Keep Moving: Physical activity generates body heat. Take short walks or stretch indoors to stay warm. Avoid prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. Stay Informed: Check weather forecasts regularly. Be aware of wind chill factors, as they can make the temperature feel much colder than it actually is. Stay Hydrated: Cold air can be dehydrating. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to maintain good hydration levels. Home Heating Safety: If using space heaters or other heating devices, follow safety guidelines. Keep flammable materials away, and never leave heaters unattended. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on elderly neighbors, young children, and individuals with health conditions. Ensure they have proper heating and are staying warm. Prepare Your Vehicle: If driving in cold weather, ensure your vehicle is winter-ready. Check tires, brakes, and fluids. Keep an emergency kit with blankets, snacks, and a flashlight. Know the Signs of Hypothermia: Be aware of symptoms like shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If you or someone else shows signs of hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately. Remember, taking simple precautions can make a significant difference in your well-being during the cold weather. Stay warm, stay safe! [adrotate group=”1″] Views: 117
