NEWFOUNDLAND – THE ARISTOCRAT AMONG DOGS. The dogs which take their name from the island of Newfoundland appeal to all lovers of animals. There are now two established varieties, the black and the white and black. There are also bronze-colored dogs, but they are rare. The black variety of the Newfoundland is essentially black in colour; but this does not mean that there may be no other color, for most black Newfoundlands have some white marks. In fact, a white marking on the chest is said to be typical of the true breed. Any white on the head or body would place the dog in the other than black variety. The black colour should preferably be of a dull jet appearance which approximates to brown. In the other than black class, there may be black and tan, bronze, and white and black. The latter predominates, and in this color, beauty of marking is very important. The head should be black with a white muzzle and blaze, and the body and legs should be white with large patches of black on the saddle and quarters, with possibly other small black spots on the body and legs. Apart from color, the varieties should conform to the same standard. The head should be broad and massive, but in no sense heavy in appearance. The muzzle should be short, square, and clean cut, eyes rather wide apart, deep set, dark and small, not showing any haw; ears small, with close side carriage, covered with fine short hair (there should be no fringe to the ears), expression full of intelligence, dignity, and kindness. The body should be long, square, and massive, loins strong and well filled; chest deep and broad; legs quite straight, somewhat short in proportion to the length of the body, and powerful, with round bone well covered with muscle; feet large, round, and close. The tail should be only long enough to reach just below the hocks, free from kink, and never curled over the back. The quality of the coat is very important; the coat should be very dense, with plenty of undercoat; the outer coat somewhat harsh and quite straight. The appearance generally should indicate a dog of great strength, and very active for his build and size, moving freely with the body swung loosely between the legs, which gives a slight roll in gait. As regards size, the Newfoundland Club standard gives 140 lbs. to 120 lbs. weight for a dog, and 110 lbs. to 120 lbs. for a bitch, with an average height at the shoulder of 27 inches and 25 inches respectively; but it is doubtful whether dogs in proper condition do conform to both requirements. When rearing puppies give them soft food, such as well-boiled rice and milk, as soon as they will lap, and, shortly afterwards, scraped lean meat. Newfoundland puppies require plenty of meat to induce proper growth. The puppies should increase in weight at the rate of 3 lbs. a week, and this necessitates plenty of flesh, bone and muscle-forming food, plenty of meat, both raw and cooked. Milk is also good, but it requires to be strengthened with casein. The secret of growing full-sized dogs with plenty of bone and substance is to get a good start from birth, good feeding, warm, dry quarters, and freedom for the puppies to move about and exercise themselves as they wish. Forced exercise may make them go wrong on their legs. Medicine should not be required except for worms, and the puppies should be physicked for these soon after they are weaned, and again when three or four months old, or before that if they are not thriving. If free from worms, Newfoundland puppies will be found quite hardy, and, under proper conditions of food and quarters, they are easy to rear. Views: 117

105 Percent Rule Confusing
How many of you out there found the INDY Car 105% rule confusing? Am I the only one? We were all taught in grade school that 100% is all there is. You can have a glass of milk that is anywhere from 1% to 99% full and still have room for more. But once it reaches 100% full there is no more you can add. I eat 100% of a raspberry pie, guess what you aren’t getting any. There is none left. Because the 105% mostly applies to the slower cars in the race, one would have to assume the slowest cars on the track would have to run 105%, of the lead car. Example say the leader has a lap speed of 220 mph. This would mean the slowest car, in order to maintain the 105% rule would have to be traveling a speed of 231 mph. (220=100%) (22o x .05 [ 5%] = 231.) That would be 5% faster than the leader. WAIT A MINUTE !!!! If the slowest car is running 11 mph faster than the leader then the leader can not be leading, at least not for long. Now I realize we aren’t all engineers, Thus the 105% rule was not meant to be understood by us mere mortals. Now, let me put it this way. And I think this really makes more sense, as the apparent reason behind the rule is to keep the slower cars in a safer operating range with the average race speed. So would it not make more sense to say…call it a 95% RULE. Again let us use the 220 mph model as before. 220 x .95 (95%) = 209. An 11 mph difference. Slower still but you must admit more obtainable for the LOTUS than 231 mph. Like I have said before I am no mathematician. But 105% can’t make sense in any ones mind when it comes to racing speed (except an engineer). Especially when you are talking of slower cars. But a 95% rule holds water. Is there anyone out there who can explain a car going 105% faster that the fastest car (let alone the average speed) can be the slowest car. I can see the government taxing us 105% by the time all taxes are applied to my dollar. Perhaps this is how INDY Racing came up with that percentage. That Is How I See It Views: 192
College Campus Basketball Games
Recently it was announced the Rivalry Between INDIANA UNIVERSITY, and their cross river Rival, the UNIVERSITY of KENTUCKY, will cease to be in the upcoming 2012-2013 Season. What? Say it isn’t so. ……But, alas it is. How did this happen? The way I understand it the University of Kentucky,( AKA, know as the minor league of the NBA), in it’s usual fashion of believing Basketball at UK is a business, only, situation. They see $$$$ ,(dollar signs), in this long enduring confrontation. Indiana University doesn’t. Yes folks, it all comes down to money, as so many things do. The University of Kentucky Wildcats, want to move the games from the home gyms, to an off Campus site which seats, more people, thus, more money to line the schools pockets. Indiana University, says, NO!!! The way the Hoosiers, of IU look at it is….This is a SCHOOL team. It should be played on the campuses, to allow all students the opportunity to watch and participate. By moving to an off Campus arena would require those students to drive or by some other means go arrive at the playing site, and thereby limiting overall school participation by those students who cannot travel. As for me I must take the Hurryin Hoosiers side on this. It is a school event and should therefore be played on campus. Yes the extra money would be nice…..but let us not lose sight of the fact. of which has been lost for some time in College, and some cases High School, SPORTS are intended merely to be an extension of the class room. There, believe it or not, are things that can only be learned in a sports setting. BUSINESS,or LEARNING experience? That Is How I See It What Do You Think? Take Our Poll [poll id=’1′] Views: 151
Ah! The Perfect Boat
Finding Your Perfect Boat Finding the perfect boat is an undertaking for an experienced boater. For the first time boater, it can be a very difficult task to accomplish. To help you with your quest for the perfect boat, there are a few things you should know. Deciding what’s important Choosing the right boat is all about knowing what’s really important to you. You need to decide whether you’ll be using the boat for your own private use, fishing, or cruising. You should also consider your families feelings, as buying a boat for your own personal needs without consulting your family will probably lead to disappointing experiences or less time spent on the water. Types of boats Typically, boats will fall into five categories –fishing boats, power boats, sailboats, personal watercraft, and self powered boats. To help you find the perfect boat, we’ll take a look at what each one offers. Fishing boats The designs for fishing boats will vary quite a bit, as are the places you can use them. The boats that are meant for shallow waters of inland lakes and rivers aren’t the same boats meant for deep seas and great lakes. There are many different designs, even boats that serve no other purpose besides fishing. These types of boats normally have stowage and holders for bait, fishing poles, tackle, and even special tanks to hold live fish. Other types of fishing only boats feature an open platform where anglers can fight fish from all sides of the boat. Power boats Power boats are the most popular boats sold. The designs with power boats are as varied as their uses. Boats with seating in the front are called bowriders, which are mainly used for towing skiers or rafts. Most boats can also be used for fishing as well. If you want to do both, there are ski and fish combinations available. Sailboats When you first learn to pilot a sailboat, it can be very challenging, although very rewarding as well. A sailboat requires more skill and knowledge to operate than boats, although they are considered more rewarding once mastered. With all available sailboats, the single masted sloop is the most popular design. For those who only boat on occasion, catboats, daysailers, and dinghys are small and easily trailerable. When you finally decide on the perfect boat for you, look at what each one offers and how you plan to use it. The perfect boat for you is out there, all you have do is find the one that best matches your needs. Views: 252
Best Garden Plants
Many times we buy plants on impulse then find there is nowhere in the garden that really suits them. Before buying plants carefully examine your garden to see how much sun and shade it gets, whether the soil is well drained or waterlogged and whether your aspect is sheltered or windswept. You’ll then be equipped to go and buy the best plants for your situation; shade-loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers for the warm spots, drought-resistant plants for the parched areas which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the poorly-drained parts. But wait! Test your soil first, to determine the pH level of your soil and what kind of nutrients you need to add, if any. Is the soil acid or alkaline? Most plants prefer soil that is slightly acidic, but there are some that must have alkaline soil to grow. You can alter the soil’s pH level, but it’s much easier to simply plant for the soil you have. Now you are ready to plant. Well – almost. Will you plant in groups or singly? If you buy ‘one of everything’ your garden may seem rather spotty. Group plantings are organized, harmonious and you can vary the color for interest. Before planting out, place your chosen plants around the garden bed in their pots to see how they will look. Re-arrange them until you are satisfied. Grouping plants in sets of threes or fives usually looks better than planting in groups of even numbers. Be sure that you have an interesting combination of colors and textures of plants. Tall plants should go to the back, or the cente of your garden will be viewed equally from all sides. Try to keep your plants away from trees. The roots of trees are fiercely competitive and will steal all the nutrients and moisture meant for your flowers. The right color scheme is one way to maintain the harmony in your garden. Imagine the color of the flowers when they are in bloom. Some colors may clash with others, but can still be planted side-by-side if they have a different blooming season. Foliage color is also important. Many flower plants have silver, grey or purplish foliage that is just as attractive as the flower. This means that they are still attractive well past the blooming season and so have added value. Views: 311
Parental Involvement After School
For millions of parents around the world, the day does not end with the school bell. There are still pictures to be painted, songs to be sung and games to be played. This all adds up to keeping children happy, safe and out of trouble. But, parents have to steer away from going overboard. After school is not baby-sitting: After school activities thrive only if it is backed by sufficient parental involvement. What would a baseball game be without parents cheering their little heroes from the sidelines?. Research and choose: Instead of convenience being the decisive factor, find out things that will interest your child. Once you select a program, get the fine print and find out what you have to contribute. Free time: Many children attend piano classes, followed by ballet and squeeze in some time for play dates in between just before they rush home in time for bed. This rigor is too much for a child. So, go slow. When to quit: Often, parents enroll their child in an activity to discover that he may not be the prodigy they thought he would be. This may be the time to let go. Your child may not become the next wonder-kid. But you must allow them to finish out their obligation to the team, etc. Today to many parents will tell their children to “just quit”. Or, perhaps, the family decides it is an inconvenience for them to let the child attend practice or games. Or maybe they plan a holiday and take the child away. This only enforces a “me” attitude. I can’t count the times I had to alter plans so the children could participate in their activities. I wanted them to learn about commitment. If they have committed to be a part of something. This is the time for them to learn to fulfill their obligations. But, let him cultivate an interest that he enjoys. Remember, happiness and fulfillment are all very important. Views: 235
Teach Your Kids to Save Money
A lot of teens today do not understand the value of earning and spending money. They were not taught; that investing is necessary. Although they may still be students. Parents, you play a crucial role in this area. You should be able to teach your kids how to save money. They should be able to understand the concept of money and investment as early in childhood as possible. This will prepare them to learn money management, as they grow old. Here are some tips on how you can teach your children to save money: 1. Your children should be educated of the meaning of money. Once your children have learned how to count, that is the perfect time for you teach them the real meaning of money. You should be consistent and explain to them in simple ways and do this frequently so that they may be able to remember what you taught them. 2. Always explain to them the value of saving money. Make them understand its importance and how it will impact their life. It is important that you entertain questions from them about money and you should be able to answer them right away. 3. When giving them their allowances. You need to give them their allowances in denominations. Then you can encourage them that they should keep a certain bill for the future. You can motivate them to do this by telling them that the money can be saved and they can buy a new pair of shoes or the toys they want once they are able to save. 4. You can also teach them to work for money. You can start this at your own home. You can pay them fifty cents to one dollar every time they do extra work. I say extra work, because they should be expected to contribute to the family in some way. If you pay them for doing their regular chores, they will miss the meaning of family helping each other. This concept of earning a little “extra” money will make them think that money is something they have worked for and should be spent wisely. (As a side note, you could always deduct “taxes”. This will help them learn about how we support our government. (The “taxes” can be put into a special fund for their future use). 5. You can teach them to save money by giving them piggy banks where they can put coins and wait until they get full. You can also open bank accounts for them and let them deposit money from their allowance. I know, I know. They would never earn enough interest on their money to be able to show them any benefit to a savings account. But you can take this money and invest it in an IRA like account. Giving them the chance to learn about stocks, bonds. Mutual Funds, etc. You should always show them how much they have earned to keep them motivated. Money and saving is not something that is learned by children in one sitting. You should be patient in teaching them and relating the value of money in all of their activities. Children will learn this easily if you are patient and consistent in guiding them and encouraging them in this endeavor. Views: 393
False Advertising Or Oversight
What constitutes False Advertising ? Does anyone know. I’m sure the lawyers all have a different idea, depending on the side they are defending. I have my definition. False Advertising is the altering, omission, or just plain lying about your product. When I went to Dictionary.com, it said “ask a lawyer”. Ha Ha. Here I am only going to deal with a single product. I don’t use this product because it states one thing which is, as far as I can tell, is false advertising, But also because I can’t stomach the item it falsely claims as something it isn’t. By product name. It is Campbell’s V-8 Juice. The can states “100 % Vegetable Juice from concentrate….with added ingredients. First of all if it has added ingredients, HOW can it be 100% Vegetable Juice. Now let us look at the JUICES. Carrots. Okay I guess you can extract juice from carrots. I have never been able to. I suppose if you put it into a blender and whatever you do with it you may come up with a juice like substance. But I have never had a juicy carrot. Celery. Well I have had some celery that I would consider juicy. Beets, Yuck. But I have seen juice around beets when they are served. Parsley. I am not sure on this one. When I eat parsley it has at some point been in water, so I don’t know if that is Juicy or watery. Lettuce. Again I have never been able to extract juice from lettuce. Watercress. I don’t even know what this is. I have eaten it in my salads, but again; no juice. Spinach. Love raw spinach. Hate cooked spinach. No juice in raw spinach. But I see some slimy stuff when it is cooked, is that juice? Lets see that is 7 vegetables. But the container says V8. Suggesting there is Eight Vegetables. Let me look again. …………No that is all the vegetables listed. There is a FRUIT listed. Now we all know Fruit is where the juice is. Hello people, here we are. The folks at Campbell’s appear to count, TOMATOES, which any school child can tell you is a FRUIT. (This is the one item that I cannot tolerate). So should not the label say V7 F1. Just to be honest about the content. I think so. It would appear the Tomato (FRUIT) is the main ingredient. Or any way that is what it looks like to me. False Advertising? Most likely not. More like an oversight, or ignorance. I don’t know. If you like it drink it. But do remember it isn’t really V8. In truth it is V7F1. That Is How I See It. Views: 164
Celebrity Apprentice ?
I never watch any of the “reality” shows. However I have checked a couple of times, on the Celebrity Apprentice, (is that the name of the show). I had to see Paul Sr. from American Choppers, (I guess this one reality show I watch. Even though it isn’t as interesting as it was before they got all the fancy equipment. I enjoyed watching and learning how to do things with the tools I had). It seemed to me Paul Sr. would be so far out of his element. What I have seen, maybe a total of one (1) hour of the series, I have definitely decided the one person who would be fired the first time, is the, I don’t know how to put this politically correct, over weight woman they bill as a comedian. Sorry I don’t know her name, nor have I ever heard of her. But she is definitely the weakest contestant. I would pull my hair out if I had to work with her. She is your typical know-it-all, pushy, backstabbing, anything to get ahead ______ you fill in the blank. She would definitely have been the first one “You’re Fired”. That is my feeling. However because she is so much like Donald Trump. She will hang in there for some time. In the real world she would hang in until “The Donald” felt her to be a threat to him. He loves YES people. Most people, as he, like yes people, because they stroke their egos. Then as these yes people worm their way in they will eventually make their move to take the bosses job. They either succeed in their attempt or are disposed of. I personally have failed to see any positive she has brought to the team. But, as I said I have only watched about an hour or so of the series. I caught more of her this week when I couldn’t sleep and it was a later airing. Then I was back and forth between a better show, which happened to be about the fifth time I had seen it. Watch everyone, she is not a team player, she is an “I” player. Thus the lack of ethics. A genuine plus in “BIG BUSINESS” That Is How I See It. Views: 219
Tornado Public Service Announcement
Safety Emergency Preparation Tips When There is a Tornado From March to May of every year, the southern states are occasionally plagued by disastrous weather phenomenon known as tornadoes. For northern states, the risk comes during spring to the onset of summer. Tornadoes are considered as storms. And you know that no storm is not violent. The dangers caused by tornadoes are not due to the gustiness of the winds but by sudden and unanticipated occurrence. Unlike hurricanes, which are comparatively more powerful, the onset of a tornado can not be easily tracked. Satellite weather systems can not easily spot them because of their sudden development and their relatively smaller scale. Thus, people can only tell that there is a tornado when they actually see one. Tornadoes are massive and destructive mass of air accumulating rapidly is a circular manner. The wind is so strong that almost everything that comes to the way of the tornado is easily flown into it. How to tell if a tornado is approaching Before any safety measure, it is imperative that you be knowledgeable about the appearance and the indicators of the presence of the violent weather phenomenon. Take note that before a tornado hits an area, the wind may not be destructive minutes before the tornado hits the place. Often, before a tornado is observed, the wind may be very still. There may or may not be presence of rain. Usually, tornadoes occur at the trailing end of a thunderstorm. Thus, if there is strong thunderstorm, be prepared on the possibility that a tornado may come anytime during of before the thunderstorm ends. Because tornadoes are made up basically of strong and whirling winds, one can not easily see them. Often, reported cases indicate that the tornado appears like a cloud-like structure. Tornadoes can be seen due to the debris and dust they have accumulated while tracking their courses. You may see the debris rotating in the air in circular, whirling motion. Before a tornado hits an area, you can also hear loud roaring sound that is almost similar to an approaching freight train. The wind will also become turbulent and destructive. Safety measures before a tornado One indicator that a tornado will possibly hit an area is dark and often violet to greenish sky, which is prevalent during destructive thunderstorms. When you see and feel the indications of an approaching tornado, find a safe shelter right away. Remember, tornadoes are destructive and fatal not merely because of the strong winds but because of the debris they have accumulated. These debris vary from roof, to large rocks, to large chunks of trees. When people are hit by such debris, that is the time the tornado becomes fatal. So make sure the shelter you find would protect you from any such debris. Safety measures during a tornado Homes located in areas that are often hit by tornadoes almost always have basements. Basements offer reliable protection to people during tornadoes, so find one during an attack of a tornado. If you are in your car, just get out and find a safe shelter. Or simply lie down on sturdy structure. Lie flat and cover the head with hands. Be alert and look out for falling debris coming from the tornado. After the tornado, make sure any structure in your home is not significantly damaged. Otherwise, seek professional help all at once to ensure your safety. Tornadoes are phenomenal that one can not prevent it from occurring. However, if you know the how-to’s of being safe during such weather disturbances, you would avoid being one of the many casualties arising from such a weather turbulence. Views: 651
