NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 7 10/19-22-23/ 2023

Browns: Beat Colts after 4 BAD calls on Colts really late in the game 1.Apparently a forward shovel pass is now ruled a lateral pass and is not subject to the usual  fumble rule or interception rule.  2. A pass that is out of the back of the end zone is catchable pass.  3.  According to the Refs if on a TD drive if you get the Ball to the white goal line but not over it is a TD.  This one I don’t know the rule.  4. If your hand slides ever so slightly on the receiver with out causing any alteration to the receivers stride or anything THAT is now PASS INTERFERNCE!!!  Football is not football any more.  Give me the times when players like Dick Butkus was playing.   I remember him saying,  “I don’t want to hurt anybody.  I just want to see their heads rolling down the field”  Whether that was in jest or not I do not know. But that is the way he played.  NO!  Football isn’t football any more. Seems to me NFL football is rapidly becoming more of a “Flag Football game.”  Seems their exhuberance to make the game more safe.  Has degutted the game.  I am getting to dislike the game more each week.  It is getting closer to the times of the NBA strike.  In order to attract an audience they chose people like Michael Jordan, (a good player),  SEEM, to be exceptional by allowing him to break all the rules.  And allowing an “iNDEFENDABLE SHOT” .  There is an extended line above the goal in which if your hand enters it is “GOAL TENDING”,   NOW  it is legal for the offensive player to enter this area to “DUNK” a ball and score.  HOWEVER if a defenders hand is in that extended circle. It is called as “GOAL TENDING’  and the offensive team is awarded 2 points whether it goes in or not.  Like I said there is no way to defend against it.  Considering many of today’s players can touch the rim without even jumping.   I fail to see the excitement in watching this act.  When the game began the average player was about 5 ft 8 in.  Putting the rim over 4 ft above their head.  Sure you had some players taller.  But if capable of “dunking” , they didn’t  because that would be GOAL TENDING.   I think it is way past time to raise the goal, by the same amount as the average player of today.  12 foot goals, I think are both unreasonable.   While on the subject.  Many rules need to be enforced.  Nearly all players “palm the ball today, and then the announcers talk about how much control the players have while dribbling.   Of course you can control the ball better when you can carry the ball.  Basketball used to be a “NON CONTACT SPORT”.  Now you have more contact than is allowed in FOOTBALL.  The MLB is just as guilty after the big STRIKE.  (which is when I quit watching MLB.  I used to watch the CUBS play everyday, (before the lights), and the Braves every night.  But to get the crowd back they “unofficially’ sanctioned the use of PED (Performance Enhancing  Drugs), To produce super sluggers chasing Maris’ season home run record.  The only reason was to entice people to watch the game.  I have watched 1, one game of MLB since then.  That was because my Cubs were playing my son’s Braves and it was a birthday present. Now College basketball is a professional game.  Not only do the athletes get a “FREE EDUCATION’ I and most students today PAY  for.  The Athlete gets endorsements too.  If they are very good it could make them a millionaire before they graduate.  I remember the story of a “a student athlete basketball player in the movie HOOSIERS, lost his elgibility for ACTING as a basketball player in the movie.  Bah !! Humbug!! to professional and college sports.    I still like Australian football and Rugby.  But do not get to see that often.  I enjoy Rally Car Racing,  which is really hard to find on TV.  NOW I enjoy watching the little ones play.  They play, have fun.  Go home.  I have to admit there are some bad coaches, players with attitude, and some of the umpires who have no idea what the rules are.  Of course there are different rules according to what area you are in.  I have no problem with this as long as the rules are applied equally. O.L.Thymer agrees.  He said it is more fun watching his great grandchildren play.  He will travel nearly 100 miles one way, sometimes 1 day, sometimes 2 days, sometimes 3 days (for the travel team games), to watch them play,  other days they may play as close as 30 miles away each way.   Believe  me.  I’ve seen him do this 2-3 weeks in a row.  But now that he is having a little more trouble driving at night he may leave before a game is finished. RANT OVER.  For now. SORRY for turning this Football based talk into non football opinions.  But the idea behind starting fromthemiddleblog.com was to air my opinions.  And maybe what I said here should have been a separate post.   But I think it is all tied in.   COLTS: Owner, Jim Irsay states, QB Anthony Richardson will “probably” miss rest of season, (a damaged AC joint to his shoulder), after last Sunday’s game against Titans. He will be undergoing surgery. For those of you who are new here. This is how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. Lets hear for the kitty.  YEA TIGGERR !!!!  Not bad for her first time out 11 out of 15 games, CORRECT.  (Don’t forget we had BIG UPSETS,  the 49’ers loss to the Browns, and the Eagles loss to the Jets.  If not for those 2 she would have only missed 2 games). I did such  terrible picks last week.  I let my friend, (a cat named TIGGERR), Do the picks this week.  Heck!  she can’t do much worse.  So wish her luck.  She may take over if  she does real well. On the flip side we have four teams tied with ZERO wins, and it just happens the four teams face off against each other, (sort of),  VIKINGS 0-3 will invade the home of the 0-3 PANTHERS.   The 0-3 BRONCOS travel to Chicago to face the 0-3 BEARS.  We definitely will only have two winless teams after this week end.  (Of course we could still end up with two ties)       For those of you who are new here.     GIANTS:  Have biggest comeback since 1949.  Starting the season with a 40-0 loss against the Cowboys last week,  the Giants managed to extend that scoreless streak to 60 points before they scored against the Cardinals.  According to NFL RedZone, the last team to get outscored at least 60-0 to start a season was the 1978 Baltimore Colts, who were outscored 80-0 in the first two games of their season.  Avoiding an  0-2 start The Giants  trailed by 21, and had not come back to win after trailing by 20 or more since Nov. 19, 1950 vs. the Baltimore Colts, according to Fox Sports. They hadn’t come back from 21 down since 1949, when they did it against the Chicago Cardinals. JETS: QB Aaron Rodgers out for rest of season with TORN ACHILLES. NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 1 09-07-10-11/ 2023

WELCOME TO ANOTHER YEAR OF YOUR FAVORITE NFL SITE WHERE YOU PIT YOUR TEAM PICKING TALENT AGAINST ME. This “CONFIDENCE” Rating I started in 1991 as an “OFFICE POOL”,  then other “OFFICES’ want to join.  I then started it as a computer thing which allowed other to make their picks on line, rather than having to hand deliver them to me.  As now it was more for bragging rights, than anything else.  I can’t remember when it became a blog site.   So sit back and relax and see if you can make better picks than me.  (I’m sure it happens more often than I care to admit. The only thing I don’t like is the NFL contracts with PRIME VIDEO AND PARAMOUNT.  i just cannot justify paying a subscription fee to watch, what ( 1 game a week which I really am not a fan of either of the teams playing?). QUESTION:  With a 25-26 record since Tom Brady left and a 30 point playoff loss to Buffalo in 2021;  Will Bill Belichick finish this season as Patriots Head Coach.   Feel free to comment.   For those of you who are new here. NFL DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF 01/21-23/2023

NO NEUTRAL SITE GAME !!! For those of you who are new here. This is  how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT).  The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game.  EXAMPLE:  Say this week we have 16 games.  The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 16 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1.   You add up the TOTAL CORRECT PICKS.. That would be your score.  We use the Monday night (Last game played) as a TIE BREAKER.  The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. YOU can adopt the scoring  described above.  Or, the optional method.  A  negative score for missed games.  We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions.  EXAMPLE:   if you scored     1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pts on the second game and lost you would still have  1 pt. 1.  HOWEVER. with the same scenario new scoring system would result with a –14 score If we were playing this is how my sheet would look;  My pick will be in bold Capital letters.  you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting.  I will show my correct points in Bold I will fill in my picks Thursday.  Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use.  Or to see if you can beat me. NFL RULE CHANGES FOR 2019

2019 NFL RULES CHANGES PASS INTERFERENCE REPLAY REVIEW Beginning in 2019, both offensive and defensive pass interference calls are reviewable. Plays can be reviewed whether the penalty was called on the field or not. This rule change is subject to a one-year trial period. Explore the 2019 NFL rulebook. A pass interference ruling will be changed in replay only when there is clear and obvious visual evidence that the on-field ruling was incorrect. To change the ruling on the field, there must be clear and obvious evidence that contact “significantly hindered” or “did not significantly hinder” an opponent. See full details on the 2019 replay rule here. BLINDSIDE BLOCK Owners voted to expand protection of defenseless players by eliminating the blindside block. It is now prohibited for a blocker to initiate forcible contact with his head, shoulder or forearm when his path is toward or parallel to his own end line. The penalty for an illegal blindside block is a loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down. KICKOFF Owners voted to make permanent the kickoff rules changes that were implemented in 2018. The restrictions resulted in a 35% decrease in concussions on kickoff plays when compared to the 2017 season. 2019 NFL kickoff rules. Here are the NFL kickoff rules: The kickoff team must have five players on each side of the ball and cannot line up more than one-yard from the restraining line. For example, the kicking team will line up at the 34-yard line for a kickoff from the 35-yard line. At least two players must be lined up outside the yard-line number and two players between the inbounds lines (hash marks) and the yard-line number. At least eight players of the receiving team must be lined up in the 15-yard “setup zone” prior to kickoff; only three receiving-team players can remain outside of the setup zone. No wedge blocks are permitted. A wedge block is defined as “two or more players intentionally aligning shoulder-to-shoulder within two yards of each other, and who move forward together in an attempt to block for the runner.” Double-team blocks can only be performed by members of the receiving team who were originally lined up in the set-up zone at the time of the kick. Until the ball is touched or hits the ground, no player on either the receiving or kicking team may block within the 15-yard area from the kicking team’s restraining line. On an onside kick, the kicking team may not block in the first 10 yards. The ball is dead if it is not touched by the receiving team and touches the ground in the end zone (touchback). BOOTH REVIEWS In addition to pass interference, owners voted to expand the number of plays subject to booth reviews to include: If a penalty flag is thrown that would negate a touchdown, the play will be reviewed first to determine if there was a score before the defense elects to enforce the foul. All two-point conversion reviews will now be initiated by the Replay Official. The plays are no longer challengeable by a coach. This is true regardless of the call on the field. Visit the NFL Video Rulebook. Other rules changes for 2019 include: CELEBRATIONS Beginning in 2019, only players in uniform may enter the field to celebrate. If anyone other than a player in uniform enters the field, it is a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct — loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down. PLAYER DISQUALIFICATIONS Owners voted to expand the authority of game officials to disqualify players for acts committed during a game. In 2018, designated members of the officiating team could disqualify a player for non-football acts (such as unsportsmanlike conduct) if a flag was thrown related to that act. In 2019, this will be expanded to also include any football act. PENALTY ENFORCEMENT ON TOUCHDOWN PLAYS The offense may now apply any penalties committed by the defense to either the ensuing kickoff or to the succeeding extra point or two-point conversion plays. POINTS OF EMPHASIS USE OF HELMET The Officiating Department will continue to emphasize the Use of Helmet rule adopted in 2018. Video Rulebook: Use of Helmet The officiating standards for the Use of Helmet rule are: Lowering the head (not to include bracing for contact) Initiating contact with the helmet to any part of an opponent. Contact does not have to be to an opponent’s head or neck area — lowering the head and initiating contact to an opponent’s torso, hips, and lower body, is also a foul. Making contact on an opponent (both offense and defense) Players can be ejected for Use of Helmet fouls — and all ejections will be reviewed by senior officials in Art McNally GameDay Central in New York. The standards for ejection are, if: The player lowers his helmet to establish a linear body posture prior to initiating and making contact with the helmet; The player delivering the blow had an unobstructed path to his opponent; The contact was clearly avoidable The Committee is in support of issuing warning letters for any Use of the Helmet fouls in the interior line or where there is little space between players. OFFENSIVE HOLDING Offensive holding will be more strictly enforced this season, particularly on the back side of the run play or line of scrimmage. Referees will closely monitor play at the line of scrimmage to ensure that offensive players do not materially restrict opponents or alter the defender’s path or angle of pursuit. Material restrictions include but are not limited to: grabbing or tackling an opponent hooking, jerking, twisting, or turning him pulling him to the ground.                                                                                                                         … Continue reading NFL RULE CHANGES FOR 2019
