Indianapolis Colts: From Baltimore Beginnings to Indianapolis Glory

Indianapolis Colts: A Complete History of the Blue and White From Baltimore Beginnings to Indianapolis Glory The Indianapolis Colts are one of the most historically significant franchises in professional football. Known for legendary quarterbacks, championship defenses, outstanding coaches, and generations of loyal fans, the Colts have built a legacy that stretches from Baltimore to Indianapolis. The franchise won NFL championships in Baltimore before moving to Indianapolis in 1984. In Indianapolis, the Colts eventually became one of the NFL’s premier teams of the 2000s, led by quarterback Peyton Manning, head coach Tony Dungy, and a collection of exceptional offensive and defensive players. The Colts’ history includes NFL championships, Super Bowl victories, Hall of Fame legends, Most Valuable Player awards, and memorable postseason battles. Their story is also one of transformation, as the team moved from Baltimore to Indiana and established a new football tradition in the Midwest.  The Birth of the Colts Franchise The Colts’ roots trace to Baltimore, Maryland, where a new professional football franchise began play in 1953. The team adopted the Colts name, reflecting Baltimore’s association with horse racing and the Preakness Stakes. The Baltimore Colts became a major NFL power under head coach Weeb Ewbank and quarterback Johnny Unitas. Their dramatic overtime victory over the New York Giants in the 1958 NFL Championship Game became one of the defining moments in professional football history. Often called The Greatest Game Ever Played, it helped establish the NFL as a major television sport. Baltimore won another NFL championship in 1959. After a difficult period during the 1960s, the Colts returned to championship prominence in 1968, winning the NFL title before losing Super Bowl III to the New York Jets. The Colts rebounded in 1970. Led by quarterback Johnny Unitas and a powerful defense, Baltimore defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V, earning the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship. In 1984, owner Robert Irsay moved the team from Baltimore to Indianapolis. The move was controversial and painful for Baltimore fans, but it began a new chapter in Indiana. All Colts Owners The franchise’s ownership history includes its original Baltimore ownership and the Indianapolis era. Carroll Rosenbloom (1953–1972): The original owner of the Baltimore Colts. Rosenbloom oversaw the team’s rise to prominence, including the 1958 and 1959 NFL championships and the 1970 Super Bowl V victory. Robert Irsay (1972–1997): Acquired the franchise in 1972 through a transaction involving the Los Angeles Rams.  (It was essentially an even trade.  Even though Irsay did receive between $3 and $4 million to offset the purchase price).  He moved the team from Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984, a decision that remains one of the most controversial events in NFL history. Jim Irsay (1997–2025): Robert Irsay’s son took control of the Colts in 1997. Under his leadership, the franchise drafted Peyton Manning, won Super Bowl XLI, and became a consistent playoff contender during much of the 2000s. The Irsay family (2025–present): Following Jim Irsay’s death in May 2025, ownership passed within the family, with his daughter Carlie Irsay-Gordon taking the leading ownership role. The franchise remains under Irsay family control. Ownership has influenced the Colts’ identity at every stage, from the Baltimore championship years to the Indianapolis era.  Every Stadium the Colts Have Called Home The Colts have played in several stadiums across two cities. Baltimore Era Memorial Stadium (1953–1983) Memorial Stadium was the Colts’ principal home during their Baltimore years. The team celebrated NFL championships there in 1958, 1959, and 1968, and built its early identity around legendary players such as Johnny Unitas, Raymond Berry, and Gino Marchetti. Indianapolis Era RCA Dome (1984–2007) Originally called the Hoosier Dome, the stadium opened in 1984 and became the Colts’ first Indianapolis home. It hosted the team’s rebuilding years, its return to prominence under Peyton Manning, and the early stages of its championship run. Lucas Oil Stadium (2008–present) Opened in 2008 in downtown Indianapolis, Lucas Oil Stadium is the Colts’ current home. The stadium features a retractable roof and has hosted major sporting events, including Super Bowl XLVI in 2012. Its opening coincided with the final seasons of the Colts’ dominant Peyton Manning era.  The move to Lucas Oil Stadium gave Indianapolis a modern football venue and strengthened the Colts’ place in the city’s downtown development and sports culture.  Colts Super Bowl Championships and NFL Titles The Colts have won four NFL championships across their Baltimore and Indianapolis history, including two Super Bowl victories. 1958 NFL Championship: Baltimore defeated the New York Giants in overtime, 23–17. 1959 NFL Championship: Baltimore defeated the New York Giants, 31–16. 1968 NFL Championship: Baltimore defeated the Cleveland Browns, 34–0, before losing Super Bowl III to the New York Jets. Super Bowl V (1971): The Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 16–13, in a game played in January 1971 to decide the 1970 season. Super Bowl XLI (2007): Indianapolis defeated the Chicago Bears, 29–17, to win the franchise’s second Super Bowl championship and its first as the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts also reached Super Bowl III, Super Bowl XLIV, and other major postseason contests. Their 2006 season championship remains the defining achievement of the Indianapolis era.  Pro Football Hall of Fame: Colts Players and Coaches The Pro Football Hall of Fame recognizes players, coaches, and contributors whose careers made a lasting impact on professional football. The distinction in this section is important: the following individuals earned Hall of Fame recognition for their contributions to the Colts, rather than simply being former Colts who became famous elsewhere. Hall of Fame Legends Associated With the Colts Johnny Unitas — Quarterback: The face of the Baltimore Colts for many years, Unitas revolutionized the passing game and led Baltimore to multiple championships. Raymond Berry — Wide Receiver: Unitas’s celebrated receiving partner, Berry was renowned for route running, preparation, and reliable hands. Art Donovan — Defensive Tackle: A cornerstone of the Baltimore defensive line, Donovan helped define the Colts’ championship-era toughness. Gino Marchetti — Defensive End: A dominant defensive force whose career helped establish the Colts as… Continue reading Indianapolis Colts: From Baltimore Beginnings to Indianapolis Glory

Cleveland Browns: A Complete History

Cleveland Browns:  One of the NFL’s Most Historic Franchises: The Cleveland Browns are one of the most distinctive franchises in professional football. Founded in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC), the Browns immediately established themselves as a football powerhouse. They won the AAFC championship in all four seasons of that league’s existence before joining the National Football League in 1950. Their success continued in the NFL. Cleveland reached the NFL Championship Game in each of its first six NFL seasons and won championships in 1950, 1954 and 1955. The Browns added another NFL championship in 1964, giving the franchise four NFL championships. Including their four AAFC titles, Cleveland has won eight league championships. The Browns’ history includes legendary players such as Otto Graham, Jim Brown, Lou Groza, Marion Motley, Ozzie Newsome and Otto Graham, Jim Brown, Lou Groza, Marion Motley, Ozzie Newsome, along with Hall of Fame coach and franchise founder Paul Brown. Paul Brown The Browns began play in 1946 in the AAFC. Businessman Arthur “Mickey” McBride was the principal owner, and he hired Paul Brown as head coach and general manager. Paul Brown quickly built the Browns into a revolutionary football organization. He emphasized year-round coaching, systematic scouting, film study, playbooks and detailed preparation. His Browns won four consecutive AAFC championships from 1946 through 1949. When the AAFC folded, Cleveland entered the NFL in 1950. The Browns immediately proved they belonged. In their first NFL season, they went to the championship game and defeated the Los Angeles Rams to win the NFL championship. Cleveland continued to dominate throughout the early 1950s. Cleveland Browns Owners The Browns have had several ownership eras since their founding. Arthur “Mickey” McBride — 1946–1952 Arthur B. McBride was the original owner and one of the principal figures responsible for bringing professional football back to Cleveland after World War II. McBride hired Paul Brown to build the franchise. The decision proved enormously important, as Brown established one of the most successful organizations in early professional football. David Jones and Ellis Ryan — 1953–1960 Ownership changed in the early 1950s, with David Jones and Ellis Ryan holding ownership interests in the club. Jones served as president and became the majority owner, while Ryan remained a partial owner. Art Modell — 1961–1995 Arthur B. “Art” Modell purchased the Browns in 1961 for approximately $4 million. Modell owned the team for more than three decades. During his ownership, Cleveland won the 1964 NFL Championship, led by Jim Brown and a strong defense.  Modell’s ownership ultimately became one of the most controversial chapters in Browns history. In 1995, he announced plans to move the franchise to Baltimore. The NFL and the city of Cleveland subsequently reached an agreement that preserved the Browns’ name, colors and history in Cleveland. The Baltimore organization became a new franchise, the Ravens, while Cleveland received an expansion Browns team beginning in 1999. NFL Trust — 1996–1998 Following the move announcement and before the new Browns returned to the field, the inactive Cleveland franchise was held in an NFL trust. Cleveland did not field a team during the 1996–1998 seasons. Al Lerner — 1999–2001 Al Lerner became the owner of the re-established Cleveland Browns. Under Lerner, the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999 and moved into a newly constructed stadium on the same general lakefront site where the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium had stood. Randy Lerner — 2002–2011 Randy Lerner, Al Lerner’s son, took over ownership following his father’s death. The Browns made the playoffs in 2002 during the Lerner era, their first postseason appearance since returning to the NFL. Jimmy and Dee Haslam — 2012–present Jimmy Haslam and Dee Haslam purchased the Browns in 2012. The NFL approved the sale in October 2012.  The Haslams remain the controlling owners of the franchise. In 2025, Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back Charles Woodson became a limited partner in the Browns’ ownership group, the first minority owner added since the Haslams became controlling owners. Every Stadium the Browns Have Called Home     Cleveland Municipal Stadium — 1946–1995 The Browns’ original and longest-serving home was Cleveland Municipal Stadium, commonly called Municipal Stadium or Cleveland Stadium.  The Browns played there from their 1946 AAFC debut through the 1995 season.  They also occasionally played games at the smaller League Park during their earliest seasons, particularly before 1947. Municipal Stadium was the setting for many of the greatest moments of the early Browns dynasty, including championship games and the Browns’ 1964 NFL championship season.  Browns home: 1946–1995 League Park — Early Browns Home Games Although Cleveland Municipal Stadium was the principal Browns home, League Park was also used during the early AAFC years. The Browns played weekday games at League Park during their earliest seasons, while larger crowds were accommodated at Municipal Stadium for weekends and holidays. Browns use: primarily 1946–1947 Cleveland Browns Stadium — 1999–2012 and 2023–2024 After Cleveland received the re-established Browns franchise, a new stadium was constructed on the site of the former Municipal Stadium.  It opened in 1999 and was originally named Cleveland Browns Stadium.  The stadium underwent a succession of corporate naming arrangements over the years. FirstEnergy Stadium — 2013–2022 Beginning in 2013, the stadium was renamed FirstEnergy Stadium. Cleveland Browns Stadium — 2023–2024 The building temporarily returned to the name Cleveland Browns Stadium before another naming-rights agreement was reached. Huntington Bank Field — 2024–present In September 2024, the Browns announced a 20-year naming-rights partnership with Huntington Bank.  The stadium was officially renamed Huntington Bank Field. Washington Nationals: The Complete History of the Expos and Nationals

I’m treating the Montreal Expos and Washington Nationals as one continuous MLB franchise, because MLB recognizes the Nationals’ franchise history as beginning with the Expos in 1969. The franchise moved to Washington after the 2004 season. The Washington Nationals have one of the most unusual histories in Major League Baseball. The franchise began not in Washington, D.C., but in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as the Montreal Expos in 1969. After 36 seasons in Montreal, the franchise moved to Washington for the 2005 season and became the Washington Nationals. Although the Nationals are a relatively young Washington club, their franchise history stretches back to 1969 and includes Hall of Famers, Cy Young winners, MVPs, Rookie of the Year winners, legendary trades and, finally, a World Series championship. The franchise has played under two names: Montreal Expos — 1969–2004 Washington Nationals — 2005–present MLB’s official history treats the Expos and Nationals as one franchise. The Beginning: Montreal Gets Major League Baseball Montreal was awarded a National League expansion franchise in 1968, and the Expos began play in 1969. They became the first Major League Baseball team located outside the United States. The franchise’s founding principal owner was Charles Bronfman, the Canadian businessman and Seagram executive who helped bring Major League Baseball to Montreal. The Expos played their first game on April 8, 1969, at Shea Stadium against the New York Mets and won 11–10. Six days later, Montreal hosted its first home game at Jarry Park. The early Expos struggled to win consistently, but the organization developed a remarkable collection of young talent. Franchise Ownership Montreal Expos Charles Bronfman — 1969–1991 Bronfman was the founding principal owner and the man most responsible for bringing Major League Baseball to Montreal. He remained in control of the club until 1991. He was later inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Claude Brochu — 1991–1999 Brochu led a consortium of Canadian investors that purchased the club from Bronfman. He became the Expos’ managing general partner and attempted to keep the franchise in Montreal despite serious financial and stadium problems. Jeffrey Loria — 1999–2002 Loria acquired control of the Expos in 1999. His ownership became controversial, particularly as the club struggled financially and attempts to secure a new Montreal stadium failed. Major League Baseball — 2002–2006 MLB took control of the Expos in 2002. The franchise remained under league ownership through its final Montreal seasons and its first season in Washington. Washington Nationals Ownership Major League Baseball — 2004–2006 MLB owned and operated the franchise during the transition from Montreal to Washington. Ted Lerner and the Lerner Family — 2006–2023 In July 2006, the Lerner family officially purchased the Nationals from MLB for $450 million. Ted Lerner became the managing principal owner. The Lerners oversaw the construction and opening of Nationals Park and eventually celebrated the greatest moment in franchise history: the 2019 World Series championship. Mark Lerner — 2018–present as Managing Principal Owner Ted Lerner transferred the managing principal-owner position to his son Mark Lerner in 2018, although the Lerner family has continued to own the franchise. As of 2026, the Lerner family remains the owner of the Nationals. Every Major League Home Ballpark Montreal Expos Jarry Park — 1969–1976 Jarry Park was the original home of the Montreal Expos. It was a converted minor-league facility expanded to Major League standards. It hosted the franchise’s first home game in 1969. Olympic Stadium — 1977–2004 The Expos moved into Olympic Stadium in 1977. The stadium had been built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. It remained Montreal’s primary Major League home until the franchise moved to Washington. Hiram Bithorn Stadium — San Juan, Puerto Rico — 2003–2004 The Expos played portions of their home schedule in San Juan during their final two Montreal seasons as MLB searched for a permanent solution to the franchise’s problems. Washington Ballparks RFK Stadium — 2005–2007 When baseball returned to Washington in 2005, the Nationals initially played at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. The club played three seasons there before moving into its new ballpark. Nationals Park — 2008–present                                                                                     Nationals Park opened on March 30, 2008. The Nationals defeated Atlanta 3–2 in the first regular-season game at the new stadium, with Ryan Zimmerman hitting a walk-off home run. Nationals Park finally gave Washington a permanent baseball-only home and became the setting for the 2019 World Series championship celebration. The Greatest Hall of Famers in Franchise History The franchise has produced or developed an extraordinary number of Hall of Fame players. Because Hall of Fame plaques are based on a player’s career and may use a different team logo, this list includes Hall of Famers who played for the Expos/Nationals franchise rather than suggesting that all entered Cooperstown representing Montreal or Washington. Gary Carter Position: Catcher Born: Culver City, California Hall of Fame: 2003 Carter became one of the greatest catchers in baseball history and remains the most iconic Hall of Famer associated with the Montreal Expos. He played for Montreal from 1974–1984 and again in 1992. Carter was a seven-time All-Star and helped the New York Mets win the 1986 World Series after leaving Montreal. Tim Raines                                                                                                                      Position: Left Field Born: Sanford, Florida Hall of Fame: 2017 Raines was one of the greatest leadoff hitters and base stealers in baseball history. He spent the majority of his career with Montreal and became the face of the Expos during the 1980s. He was… Continue reading Washington Nationals: The Complete History of the Expos and Nationals

NFL DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF CONFIDENCE PICKS

Kansas scraped by for the win last night.  It wasn’t  bad enough, Chiefs returner Nikko Remigio had broken through their coverage, hitting the open field and racing toward the end zone covering 63 yards on the opening kick.  BUT Teans CB.  Kris Boyd tracked him down, caught him and stripped the ball loose, however the ball was surrounded by red shirts, and maybe a couple of Texans.  Out manned the Chiefs  swiftly recovered the ball. (A BAD OMEN for the Texans).   Adding to the drama Boyd threw his helmet leading to a penalty then starting to push his coach. Not a good thing. Coach was not on the field to recover the FUMBLE.  Still the Texans stayed in the game.  Had Houston ZH had a FG kicker with them they might have had a chance to win. Had Houston have a kicker. jake Bates missed two FIELD GOALS. And  one Extra point.  ( As I recall, all off to the right.  That is 7 missed ;what should have been 7 sure.point.  Too many momentum changes missed.  The score should have been tied and go into OT…..OF COURSE YOU STII MUST TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE OBLIGATORY BAD CALLS FAVORING MAHOMES AND COMPANY.   Mahomes has made these obligatory calls the basis of his “CAREER” For those of you who are new here. NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 17 12/29 /2022 1-1-2/2023

NFL OFFICIAL: Art McNally, 97 died Sunday of natural causes.  McNally an on field official for 9 years, including 1960-1967.  Following which he was hired by the NFL to become Supervisor of Officials.  During his term in this position he ushered in the INSTANT REPLAY.  He over saw the training and technology used in the faster more technology complicated game. Bills / BENGALS GAME POSTPONED:    Latest update Damar Hamlins is listed in Critical NFLCondition. Officially Hamlin suffered  Cardiac Arrest.  (Cardiac arrest usually results from an electrical disturbance in the heart. It’s not the same as a heart attack). UPDATE: Hsmlin vital signs back to normal.  They have put him to sleep with a breathing tube down his throat. The Monday Night Football game between Buffalo and Cincinnati has been POSTPONED after Bills Safety  Damar Hamlin.   Hamlin 24 went down after tackling Bengals WR Tee Higgins, with 5:58 left in the 1st quarter.  He  He took a few steps then collapsed.   It appeared medical personnel were giving him CPR.  He was transported by ambulance to a hospital.  No word on when or if the game will be resumed.  Our prayers are with Damar Hamlin. So far the only scheduled game for week 18 are for Saturday.  Chiefs @ Chargers 16:30 on ESPN/ABC.   At 20:15 we will have Titans @ Jaguars also on ESPN/ABC.  No other games scheduled time wise. Although we know the pairings time, date, and network remain unscheduled at this time.  NO BYES . . OFF THE SUBJECT OF NFL:  WNBA.  CONVICTED of drug TRAFFICKING, and sentenced to NINE years of prison.  PHOENIX MERCURYS,  PRIVILEGED  player will RECEIVE Full Pay for a season not played .and  league credit just as if played.  Making eligible for free agency for the 2023 season.  If another player was found to merely using drugs,  they would have been at suspended for some amount of time, along with a fine.  BUT,  some people are just PRIVILEGED, and the rules that  apply to others is ABOVE the rules.   COLTS:  Regardless of the terrible mess GM Chris Ballard has done.  Colts owner Jim Irsay says,  he’s my man.  He will be back for next season.  The one decision I have no opinion on so far is maintaning Jeff Saturday as next years HC.  (Saturday is still up in the air.)  I would like to see how he does without someone like Ballard making all the player calls, and I am sure other things he has his thumb on.  I’m sure if Saturday had his say Ehlinger would have been playing instead of Ryan and Foles..  However with Ballard in the BIG seat.  Not doing what needs to be done to form a team.  Saturday will look like the scapegoat.  Thus protecting Irsay’s BUDDY; BALLARD.  The thing is how long does Jim Irsay want to continue fielding losing teams. NFL TRIVIA:   Which undefeated team did the Miami Dolphins beat to keep their “UNDEFEATED SEASON” , in tact in 1985?       (For the answer unscramble the letters just above the pick sheet). NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 16 12/22-24-25-26/2022

COLTS: Benched Matt Ryan in favor of an aging Nick Foles.   Benching Ryan makes sense; should have been done way earlier.  In fact I can see no reason for the Colts to have signed him to begin with.  But, putting that aside,  would it not make more sense  to give the young Sam Ehlinger playing time.  Doing so would give him a better chance to prove himself.  Even if the Colts keep him as a backup QB.  He would have game experience if called upon during the next season.  Or give other teams a chance to appraise him for a trade.   Sometimes I think COMMON SENSE, is an unknown commodity among the Colts organization.  I am not terribly impressed with any of the college QBs this year.  For all practical purposes the Colts season is over.  Give Ehlinger a chance! NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 18 NFL 01/09/2021

BRONCOS:  Fire HC: Vic Fangio. TITANS: Clinch AFC Number 1 seed. JAGUARS:  Secure 1st overall draft pick. STEELERS: LB: T.J. Watt tied Michael Strahan’s single season SACK record of 22.5. BEARS:  Fire GM: Ryan Pace and HC: Matt Nagy.   For those of you who are new here. This is  how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT).  The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game.  EXAMPLE:  Say this week we have 16 games.  The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 16 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1.   You add up the TOTAL CORRECT PICKS.. That would be your score.  We use the Monday night (Last game played) as a TIE BREAKER.  The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. YOU can adopt the scoring  described above.  Or, the optional method.  A  negative score for missed games.  We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions.  EXAMPLE:   if you scored     1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pts on the second game and lost you would still have  1 pt. 1.  HOWEVER. with the same scenario new scoring system would result with a –14 score If we were playing this is how my sheet would look;  My pick will be in bold Capital letters.  you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting.  I will show my correct points in Bold I will fill in my picks Thursday.  Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use.  Or to see if you can beat me.
