It is time we kick off the 95th season of the NFL. Remember Tne NFL was in existence 46 years before the adoption of the Super Bowl. 2014 NFL Team Schedule For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game. EXAMPLE: Say this week we have 17 games. The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 17 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1. We use the Monday night game as a TIE BREAKER. The tie is broke by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating tams) final score, without going over. If we were playing this is how my sheet would look; My pick will be in bold Capital letters. you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting. I will show my correct points in Bold This year I am making a change in the scoring. YOU can adopt the new scoring or continue to use the old scoring. This year we get a negative score for missed games. We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions. EXAMPLE: LAST YEAR if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pt on the second game you would still have a Positive 1. HOWEVER. this year the same scenario would result with a -14 score. I will fill in my picks Thursday. Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use. Or to see if you can beat me. Rod Blagojevich Former Politician
As you all know Rod Blagojevich has been found guilty and sentenced for his actions as governor of the state Illinois. He, unlike you and me was given a grace period, until February 16, 2012, to report to prison. If it were me they would have hauled me off to a cell right then. But I suppose when you are wealthy, you have to be allowed time to prepare yourself, and “set your affairs in place”. Here we have a man. A man who as a child worked as a shoeshine boy, and a dishwasher, among other odd jobs, to help his family pay bills and to enable him to attend college. He earned his BA degree from Northwestern University, before gaining his JD from Pepperdine University, A man who became a lawyer, prosecutor, State Legislator,U.S. Congressman, and Governor. Granted he did marry well and a lot of his success came from the backing of his influential father-in-law. Now he will spend at least 11.9 years in prison. I don’t think they have decided which prison, most likely Terre Haute, Indiana. (A good 4 hour drive from Chicago). Will his family and friends make that 8 hour roundtrip, for about an 1 hour visit? Will they move closer to his prison? What will his family do? Will they stay behind him? Will his wife wait nearly 12 years to resume her life with him? He will be about 67 when he is released. Did he make enough money on the side to compensate for the lost retirement he will surely face? For some of you the $65,000.oo a year retirement he would receive from the state of Illinois is not much. But to someone like me, that exceeds the total of my best 2 years of work during my entire life. I am assuming due to the nature of his crimes he will not be receiving that retirement, which he would begin receiving, I think, in January. He may get his federal retirement ($15,000.oo) from the term he spent in Congress. (When he turns 65). The man who came from shoeshiner/dishwasher. To an IMPORTANT, INFLUENTIAL, man on top of the world. What went wrong??? I guess Mr. Blagojevich will have plenty of time to contemplate about what went wrong, and why. I would sure like to be able to talk to him. To learn where he blew his fuse. I think it took tremendous drive as a young man to attain the heights he reached. Perhaps it was this same drive that became his undoing. That Is How I See It. became Views: 171
St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day. A day we celebrate with parades, shamrocks, and green beer. But who was St. Patrick, and why do we celebrate a day with his name. St. Patrick a, Christian leader, is revered by Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodoxy, Lutheran Church, and the Anglican Communion. Patrick, the only name I could find, was born in the year 385 at Banna Venta Berniae. of Roman Britain, and died March 17, 461 age 75 or 76 depending on month of birth. (There are some who believe his death was in 493.) The son of a high ranking Roman family. Around his 16th year he was captured by marauders, and sold into slavery as a shepherd for an Irish Chief, from Antrim, (a country in N.E Ireland). While tending these flocks he would pray to God as many as one hundred times a day. It was in those six years young Patrick learned the Celtic language . His master ,Milchu, was also a high druid. Thus Patrick learned of the primeval Irish religions. He fled to Tours (a city in Western France). While at Tours, Patrick became a missionary and later was dispatched to Britain to combat wrongful teachings of Pelagius, (an English monk whose teachings opposed those of St Augustine). Although St. Patrick is accredited with ridding Ireland of snakes, evidence supports the theory after the Ice Age, Ireland never had snakes. It is suggested the “snakes” referred the serpent symbolism of the Druids. The shamrock, you see in so many St. Patricks Day was used by him while explaining the Holy Trinity. St Patricks Day parades was started by the American-Irish who celebrated the saint’s feast day by marching through the streets of New York in 1792. Although Chicago is host to the most famous St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Kiss me I’m Irish. Some enterprising person came up with this idea, because of the Blarney Stone of Irish legend. Supposedly kissing the Blarney Stone, (A stone built into the Blarney Castle; which one has to lean out on a ledge look up and kiss), brings one the gift of gab. The thinking was….If you can’t kiss the stone, then kiss an Irishman. When drinking your “green beer” say “slainte! (Pronounced slancha). Irish version of “cheers.” Slainte means health. Again, we have here a holiday no self respecting atheist can celebrate without being a hypocrite. Too Bad. Happy St Patrick’s Day!! That Is How I See It. Views: 277
Baseball Without Wrigley Field?
Ground Breaking in March, 1914. Opened April 1914. Located at 1060 Addison Street Weeghman Park was the home of the Federal League baseball team Chicago Whales. The park then became the home of the Chicago Cubs in 1916, and was renamed Cubs Park between 1920 and 1926, before being renamed after Cubs owner and Chewing gum VIP William Wrigley Jr (Love that Juicy Fruit. Wrigley Field also served as home to the National Football League’s Chicago Bears. Although the 10th smallest ballpark still in use Wrigley Field is the OLDEST National League Park. It is second only to American League’s Fenway Park (by 2 years). Wrigley Field is the only remaining Federal League park. The new owners have apparently asked for a $200 million to $300 million state bond sale. I definitely am not a proponent of Government Funds being used for non-government purposes. Look at Indianapolis, Indiana . They made a terrible deal to keep the COLTS. The owner is making a bushel more money because he has less OUTGO. Perhaps it is just a coincidence, but it was said that after the sweetheart deal, Colts owner went from MILLIONAIRE to BILLIONAIRE. The taxpayers are the losers here, and Indianapolis is scrambling to find the funds to hold up it’s end of the deal. What I am in favor of is this. Let the people who profit from Wrigley Field, the surrounding businesses, kick into help needed renovations. The hotels, restaurants, bars. parking lots, taxis, buses, trains, etc. Why should the average person be saddled with the cost. I know in my area my taxes go to support Professional teams, but I can’t afford a ticket to see the games. The difference here is Wrigley Field is a part of Americana. Some souvenir manufacturers claim the Cubs as a goldmine. The big QUESTION. Should government funds be used to help preserve this piece of American History. I say FIRST the aforementioned businesses who owe their existence to Wrigley Field. Without Wrigley Field most of those businesses would not exist. I think their financial support would go a long way on needed renovations, note I stressed needed. If there are more legitimate needs then I can see using a government loan, maybe. After all what would baseball be without WRIGLEY FIELD. But this is a question only Chicagoans can answer. What do you think? That’s the way I see it. Views: 195
