Golden State Valkyries: The Complete History

Golden State Valkyries: The Complete History of the WNBA’s Newest Franchise. The Golden State Valkyries are one of the newest WNBA franchise, basketball, but their arrival represents something much bigger than simply adding another WNBA team. The Valkyries brought WNBA basketball back to the Bay Area in 2025, becoming the league’s 13th franchise and the first WNBA expansion team since 2008. The franchise is owned and operated by the Golden State Warriors organization and plays its home games at Chase Center in San Francisco. Unlike most franchises that have decades of history behind them, the Valkyries are writing their history almost in real time. Their first two seasons have already produced a Coach of the Year, a Most Improved Player, multiple All-Stars, a playoff appearance, expansion records and one of the strongest fan responses in WNBA history. The Birth of the Golden State Valkyries On October 5, 2023, the WNBA announced that the Golden State Warriors had been awarded an expansion franchise.  The team would begin play in 2025, making it the first new WNBA franchise since 2008.  The franchise was designed to represent the entire Bay Area while maintaining strong ties to Oakland and San Francisco. The team’s  headquarters were established at the Warriors’ former Oakland facility, while home games would be played at Chase Center in San Francisco. The team name Valkyries was inspired by Norse mythology. The organization described the name as representing warrior women who are fearless and unwavering.  The result was a new identity built around strength, competition and the Bay Area’s long tradition of women’s basketball. Valkyries Ownership History Because the Valkyries are an expansion franchise, their ownership history is very short. Golden State Warriors Ownership — 2023-Present The WNBA franchise was awarded to the Golden State Warriors organization in 2023. The team is backed by Warriors Co-Executive Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob and Co-Executive Chairman Peter Guber.  Lacob and Guber purchased the Warriors in 2010 and subsequently developed the organization that eventually launched the Valkyries. Joe Lacob has been particularly visible in the Valkyries organization. The WNBA’s team information lists Lacob as the owner, while the franchise has described Lacob and Guber as the ownership leadership behind the organization. Ownership timeline 2023-present: Golden State Warriors ownership group Key ownership leaders: Joe Lacob and Peter Guber There has been no previous Valkyries owner, because the franchise did not begin WNBA play until 2025. Every Arena the Valkyries Have Called Home The Valkyries have played their regular-season home games at one primary arena, but another arena has officially hosted a Valkyries home playoff game. Chase Center — San Francisco Chase Center is the Valkyries’ permanent home arena. The 18,064-seat facility opened in 2019 in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood and is also the home of the Golden State Warriors.  The Valkyries played their first-ever regular-season home game at Chase Center on May 16, 2025, against the Los Angeles Sparks. Their 2025 schedule contained 22 regular-season home games at the arena. Chase Center quickly became known to Valkyries supporters as “Ballhalla.” The building has been central to the team’s remarkable attendance story. The Valkyries sold out every regular-season home game in both 2025 and 2026. The franchise announced in September 2026 that it had become the first WNBA team to sell out every regular-season home game in each of its first two seasons. SAP Center — San Jose The SAP Center became a temporary Valkyries home for the franchise’s first playoff home game.  During the 2025 postseason, Chase Center was unavailable because of a previously scheduled event. The Valkyries therefore moved their first-round Game 2 against the Minnesota Lynx to SAP Center in San Jose.  The game was played September 17, 2025. Thus, the complete list of arenas in which the Valkyries have played a designated home game is: Chase Center — San Francisco SAP Center — San Jose Chase Center remains the franchise’s permanent home.   The 2025 Inaugural Season The Valkyries’ first season immediately became historic.  Rather than struggling through a typical expansion season, Golden State won 23 regular-season games, setting a WNBA record for victories by an expansion team.  Even more significantly, the Valkyries became the first expansion team in WNBA history to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season. The team finished the regular season with a 23-21 record and entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed.  Golden State faced the No. 1-seeded Minnesota Lynx in the first round. The Valkyries lost the series, but their postseason appearance established a foundation that few expansion teams had ever matched. 2026: The Valkyries Take Another Step The Valkyries entered their second season with substantially higher expectations. By September 2026, Golden State had already established another remarkable mark: the franchise announced that it had sold out all 22 regular-season home games for the second consecutive season. The team was also leading the WNBA in average attendance, with 18,064 fans per game.   The 2026 team also developed into one of the league’s strongest defensive clubs.  As of late September, Golden State had a 31-12 record and had already secured a playoff berth. The organization entered the 2026 postseason having established itself as more than a typical expansion franchise. WNBA Hall of Famers Who Earned Their Hall of Fame Credentials as Valkyries This is an important distinction. The Valkyries have several experienced WNBA players, including players who have won championships or earned major league honors elsewhere.  However, under the specific standard of this article—players or coaches whose Hall of Fame credentials were earned as members of the Valkyries—the answer is currently:     None. The Valkyries have not yet had a player or coach inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame or Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame specifically on the strength of a Valkyries career.  That is not surprising.                                                                      The franchise… Continue reading Golden State Valkyries: The Complete History

The History of the San Francisco Giants

[custom_countdown width=”100px”]           The History of the San Francisco Giants: From New York to the Bay Area The San   Francisco Giants are one of the oldest and most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. Their history begins in 1883, when John B. Day and Jim Mutrie organized a National League club originally known as the New York Gothams. The club adopted the nickname Giants during the 1885 season. The franchise has played in two great baseball cities, New York and San Francisco, and has been home to some of the greatest players in baseball history. The Giants have won 23 National League pennants and eight World Series championships, five championships in New York and three since moving to San Francisco. The Beginning: The New York Gothams The Giants entered the National League in 1883. John B. Day and Jim Mutrie had already operated the New York Metropolitans, and they helped establish the new National League club. The Gothams quickly became a powerhouse. By 1885, the team was being called the Giants, and the roster included future Hall of Famers such as Roger Connor, Buck Ewing, Tim Keefe and Mickey Welch. That 1885 club won 85 of 112 games, producing the highest winning percentage in franchise history. The Giants won their first National League pennants in 1888 and 1889 and also won the early championship series against the American Association champion. The franchise survived numerous ownership changes, ballpark moves and league challenges before establishing itself as one of baseball’s permanent institutions. Every Home Ballpark in Giants History Few franchises have had a more interesting ballpark history. The Giants have played in several different parks in New York and two temporary and permanent homes in San Francisco.Jersey City, New Jersey Ballpark Years Used Location Polo Grounds I 1883-1888 110th St. & Sixth Ave., Manhattan Oakdale Park 1889 Jersey City, New Jersey St. George Grounds 1889 Staten Island, New York Polo Grounds II 1889-1890 155th St. & Eighth Ave., Manhattan Polo Grounds III 1891-1911 Coogan’s Hollow, Manhattan Hilltop Park 1911 165th St. & Fort Washington Ave. Polo Grounds V 1911-1957 155th/157th St. & Eighth Ave., Manhattan Seals Stadium 1958-1959 16th & Bryant Streets, San Francisco Candlestick Park 1960-1999 Candlestick Point, San Francisco Oracle Park 2000-present Third & King Streets, San Francisco The Giants opened their 1889 season at Oakdale Park in Jersey City because they had been evicted from the original Polo Grounds. They played two games there before moving to the St. George Grounds on Staten Island. Later that year they moved back to Manhattan to a new Polo Grounds. The 1911 season produced another unusual chapter. The Polo Grounds burned, forcing the Giants to temporarily use Hilltop Park, the home of the American League New York Highlanders. The rebuilt Polo Grounds opened in June 1911 and became the Giants’ home through the 1957 season. Seals Stadium After moving west in 1958, the Giants played their first two seasons in San Francisco at Seals Stadium. On April 15, 1958, the Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-0 in their first Major League game in San Francisco. Orlando Cepeda hit a home run in the historic season and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Candlestick Park The Giants moved to Candlestick Park in 1960. The stadium was initially considered a modern improvement over Seals Stadium, but its cold temperatures and notorious winds eventually made it one of the most distinctive—and sometimes hated—ballparks in baseball. Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Barry Bonds and many other Giants stars played at Candlestick. Oracle Park The Giants opened their new downtown San Francisco ballpark in 2000. Originally named Pacific Bell Park, it later became SBC Park, AT&T Park, and finally Oracle Park. The privately financed stadium helped secure the franchise’s long-term future in San Francisco. It also became famous for McCovey Cove, where home runs hit by left-handed Giants hitters can splash into the water. Giants Ownership Through the Years The ownership history of the Giants is almost as complicated as the franchise’s ballpark history. The following list identifies the principal owner or controlling ownership figure for each major period. During the modern era, ownership became an investment partnership rather than a single-person operation. Years Principal/Controlling Owner 1883-1893 John B. Day 1893-1895 C.C. Van Cott 1895-1902 Andrew Freedman 1902-1912 John T. Brush 1912-1919 Harry N. Hempstead 1919-1936 Charles A. Stoneham 1936-1976 Horace C. Stoneham 1976-1993 Bob Lurie 1993-2008 Peter Magowan-led ownership group 2008-2011 William H. Neukom-led ownership group 2012-2019 Larry Baer as managing/control executive 2019-present Greg Johnson as chairman and designated control person The Giants’ early ownership chronology is documented in the club’s historical media guides. Horace Stoneham and the Move West Horace Stoneham inherited the Giants from his father, Charles, in 1936. He eventually became the man responsible for one of the biggest decisions in franchise history. In 1957, Stoneham announced that the Giants would leave New York for San Francisco. The move occurred at the same time the Brooklyn Dodgers were moving to Los Angeles. The two moves permanently changed the geographic map of Major League Baseball. Bob Lurie Saves the Giants Bob Lurie purchased the Giants in 1976 and spent years trying to obtain a new stadium. When those efforts failed, he agreed to sell the team to a group that intended to move it to the Tampa Bay area. That move nearly happened. In 1992, a Bay Area investment group led by Peter Magowan stepped forward and purchased the franchise, keeping the Giants in San Francisco. The Modern Ownership Group Peter Magowan’s group immediately changed the direction of the franchise. The group signed Barry Bonds and began the effort to build a new downtown stadium. Today, the Giants are owned by a consortium of investors. Greg Johnson is chairman and the club’s designated control person, while his father, Charles B. Johnson, has been the largest individual shareholder. The Johnson family has been part of the ownership group since the early 1990s. The Philadelphia Phillies: A Complete History

The Philadelphia Phillies: A Complete History of Baseball’s Oldest Continuous One-City Franchise The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the most remarkable franchises in professional sports. Founded in 1883, the Phillies are the oldest continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in professional sports. Their history includes pennants separated by decades of frustration, legendary players, colorful owners, unusual ballparks, devastating trades, heartbreaking losses and, finally, two World Series championships. The Phillies have played in Philadelphia for their entire existence. They have also experienced some of the longest periods of losing in major-league history. Yet generations of Philadelphia fans continued to support them, creating one of baseball’s most passionate fan bases. As of 2026, Philadelphia has won two World Series championships, in 1980 and 2008, and has appeared in the World Series eight times, most recently in 2022. The franchise’s official postseason record shows its World Series appearances and results from 1915 through 2022. The Beginning: 1883 The Phillies began in 1883 when the National League moved the franchise of the defunct Worcester Ruby Legs to Philadelphia. Two men were central to the beginning: Al Reach, a former professional baseball player and successful sporting-goods businessman John Rogers, a Philadelphia attorney Reach became the club’s first owner and helped give the team the name Phillies, a natural nickname referring to Philadelphia. The Phillies’ first game was played on May 1, 1883, at Recreation Park against the Providence Grays. Philadelphia lost 4-3. The franchise was sometimes called the Quakers during its early years, but Phillies became the official name in 1890. The organization has remained in Philadelphia ever since. Phillies Ownership Through the Years The Phillies experienced an extraordinary amount of ownership instability during their first six decades. MLB’s historical account notes that 10 different ownership groups controlled the franchise during its first 60 years. Al Reach and John Rogers — 1883-1903 Al Reach was the key founder and early owner. He was already a successful sporting-goods manufacturer and helped establish baseball’s business side in Philadelphia. Reach and Rogers eventually sold the franchise after the 1902 season. James Potter and the Pittsburgh Syndicate — 1903-1904 A syndicate connected with the Pittsburgh Pirates purchased the Phillies in 1903. James Potter became president. The arrangement lasted only about a year. William Locke and Others The next period was marked by several ownership changes. This instability became a recurring problem for the Phillies. Horace Fogel Horace Fogel became one of the team’s owners and later president. His tenure ended after he was banned from baseball for criticizing league officials and umpires. William Baker — 1913-1930 William Baker became one of the most influential early Phillies owners. He renamed Philadelphia Park Baker Bowl, which became the team’s home for many years. Baker was also the owner when Philadelphia finally reached its first World Series in 1915. Unfortunately, the Phillies lost the Series to Boston. One of Baker’s most infamous decisions came in 1917 when he traded Hall of Fame pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander to the Chicago Cubs. Alexander had won at least 30 games in three consecutive seasons. Gerry Nugent — 1932-1943 Nugent inherited a financially troubled franchise and operated it on an extremely limited budget. The results were disastrous. The Phillies repeatedly traded useful players to raise money. The team eventually reached one of the lowest points in franchise history, including a 42-109 record in 1942. The National League eventually intervened because Nugent could no longer support the club financially. William Cox — 1943 William Cox purchased the Phillies in 1943 but was quickly removed from baseball after an investigation determined that he had bet on Phillies games. He was banned from baseball. The Carpenter Family — 1943-1981 The Carpenter family changed the Phillies more than any ownership group before or since. R. R. M. Carpenter Sr. purchased the club in November 1943, with his son Bob Carpenter Jr. becoming president. The Carpenter family owned the Phillies for nearly four decades, the longest ownership period by a single family in franchise history. Bob Carpenter and general manager Herb Pennock began building a farm system that eventually produced the famous Whiz Kids. The organization developed players such as: Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Curt Simmons, Granny Hamner, Del Ennis The Phillies won the 1950 National League pennant with this young team. Later, under Ruly Carpenter, the organization developed another championship nucleus. Ruly Carpenter became president in 1972. His leadership helped produce the 1980 championship team, built around players such as: Mike Schmidt,  Steve Carlton Greg Luzinski Larry Bowa Bob Boone Bake McBride The Phillies won their first World Series in 1980. Bill Giles Ownership Group — 1981-1997 After the 1981 season, the Carpenter family sold the Phillies to a group headed by executive Bill Giles. The sale price was approximately $30.175 million. The ownership structure later included other prominent Philadelphia investors. David Montgomery Era David Montgomery became president and limited partner in 1997. He became one of the most respected figures in modern Phillies history and remained an important part of the organization during the franchise’s return to prominence. John Middleton and the Current Ownership John Middleton became the Phillies’ control person and managing partner in 2016. The Phillies remain organized as a limited partnership. Middleton is the club’s managing partner and controls the organization’s baseball operations from an ownership standpoint. Every Major Phillies Home Ballpark The Phillies have played in a remarkable number of Philadelphia ballparks. Recreation Park — 1883-1886 This was the site of the Phillies’ first home game. The original park was located near 24th Street and Ridge Avenue. Philadelphia Baseball Grounds — 1887-1894 The Phillies moved into a larger facility in 1887. It was destroyed by fire in 1894. University of Pennsylvania — 1894 The Phillies temporarily used the University of Pennsylvania’s athletic grounds after the fire. Columbia Park — 1903 The Phillies temporarily played at Columbia Park during part of 1903. Baker Bowl — 1895-1938 The Baker Bowl became one of the most famous—and notorious—parks in baseball. It was originally called National League Park and later… Continue reading The Philadelphia Phillies: A Complete History

2023 MARCH MADNESS PICK SHEETS , UPDATES AND OCCASIONAL OPINION

IT’S OVER   San Diego St.  59 UCONN.            76 Look here for the score for the Championship game.  I will add them to the brackets tomorrow.  The reason for this I live in a state that is located in the CENTRAL Time Zone.  But a several years ago we had a DiCTATOR for Govenor.  Who came from. Most of his life being spent in Washington DC.  We were already using Eastern Standard Time all year round Which put us ahead of the sun by 1 hour.  We made the most if it.  THEN he decided he wanted us to go 2h hours ahead of the sun.  For those of you who don’t  already know, DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME is an antiquated system.   Although his change did not pass in legislature.  He put a pause on the voting before it was final.  He and his thugs pretty much of the opposition to change their votes. (Even the ones who won their seat by telling the voters they would never vote for EDT.   Which in reality is ATLANTIC TIME).   We only have one state that has a very, very small part in the Atlantic time Zone This means when the sun says 7:30 pm  we are observing 9:30 pm.  I have a 9am appointment which is a 1 hour drive away.  This means I have to be up and about by no later than 7am am.    With the game ending around midnight here, finishing my blog puts it 1 am before I get to bed.  Then another hour to settle down to sleep.  So yeah I may get 4-5 hours sleep. But it is usually 4 hours at most.   WHY this late start. To coddle those in California. Let California move 2 hours ahead of the sun.  Let all states in the good old USA move their clocks 2 hours ahead of the sun.   Health organizations have pointed out many many health hazards to the change of 1 hour.  Think what it is if you are 2 hours ahead.  So enjoy your game California.   We all know how screwed up your legislature is. ( Maybe they will let you move 3 hours ahead of the sun. This is where you can print your “OFFICE POOL” Bracket, Check the scores, etc. Yes I will have “MY PICKS” so you can compare your picks to mine. (And Laugh or Cry).I will have A “MASTER BRACKET”,  “WHAT IF YOU CHOSE THE HIGH PICKS”  for each game. .An “UPSET” will be RED on “ALL HIGH PICKS”  Bracket.  GREEN indicate HIGH SEED Win What is a seed?  Merely a starting place.  Although unlikely, IT is possible for two 16 seeds to meet in the final game.  Would lets say Michigan St  were to be seeded as a number 16.  They would still have  to win all games to be CHAMPION ! SEEDING attempts to give a more favored team an easier path to the CHAMPIONSHIP.  Seeding should lead to  the best 2 teams playing in the final game.  However there  is always that upset minded team;  or  the chance that the favored team has a bad game, a stand out player is sick or injured. To  print BRACKET:  HOVER OVER SHEET.  You will see a window at bottom with an arrow pointing down (second from right).  Click this button.  It will open a new window with the bracket then click the printer icon or go to file,  and PRINT. Purdue number one seed upset by play in team Fairleigh-Dickinson 58-63.  BUT, they deserved the loss.  I saw them give up with about a minute to go.  Down by, (I think 3),   They just stood there and let FDU run the clock down.  Purdue made no move to gamble a foul.  Just stood there while the clock worked against them.   I put the blame for this squarely on Coach Painter.  Any coach would be yelling at them to foul.  I think it is time for Purdue to start looking for a new coach.  TONIGHT !! The year 1979 was the inaugural year for SEEDING the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  THIS is the first year NO number 1,2,or 3 team made it to the FINAL FOUR.  To make things more interesting. this is the first time Florida Atlantic has won an NCAA Tournament game.  San Diego State  finally got to the ELITE EIGHT.  Last year was the first time  Miami got to the Elite Eight.  UConn hasn’t been fairing well the past few years Remember when before the MADNESS began?  I told you seeding is just a place to start.   This year proves my point. The seeds add up to a total of 23.  UConn is the highest seeded team, being seeded number 4.  Followed by TWO number 5 teams.  Miami, and San Diego St.  Rounding out the FINAL FOUR is number 9 Florida Atlantic.  NO NUMBER 1 SEEDS TO ELITE 8.   FIRST TIME EVER !!!! Kansas St wins 1st overtime of the tournament 96-93  over Michigan ST. KANSAS ST.  Marcus Novell sets NCAA March Madness Record  for ASSISTS, with 19 in one game.  Against Michigan St. 03/28/2023 15 seed Princeton UPSETS number 2 seed Arizona 59-55. 15 seeded Furman Paladins make most of 1st appearance since 1980.  UPSETS number  4 seed Virginia.  With help by a Virginia player, trapped in a corner with 5 seconds to go; tried to throw the ball high into the other half court.  Furman player intercepted the throw fed another who sank a 3 pointer winning by one.   I have no idea why the throw was made.  Up by 2 and 5 seconds,  trapped a foul was likely to happen.  Which would give Virginia a chance to  make it a 3 point lead with a single free throw.  Or a game icing 4 point lead with the second free throw.  Sorry I don’t remember the  players names.  I was just too awe struck and taken by surprise. FURMAN PALADINS gain 1st NCAA Tournament since 1980. With Southern Conf Championship. NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP 01/21-23/2023

This is a scary week for me.  I made my picks based on my usual formula.  But my gut is saying 49’ers,  who have been on a roll.  To a lesser degree the Bengals may be peaking at just the right time.  Therefore I would not be surprised if 49’ers and or Bengals advance to the Super Bowl.   Good Luck to all 4 teams. It would appear that Jim Harbaugh was not up to taking on the Colts Challenge. For those of you who are new here. This is  how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. OFF THE SUBJECT OF NFL:  WNBA.  CONVICTED of drug TRAFFICKING, and sentenced to NINE years of prison.  PHOENIX MERCURYS,  PRIVILEGED  player will RECEIVE Full Pay for a season not played .and  league credit just as if played.  Making eligible for free agency for the 2023 season.  If another player was found to merely using drugs,  they would have been at suspended for some amount of time, along with a fine.  BUT,  some people are just PRIVILEGED, and the rules that  apply to others is ABOVE the rules.   COLTS:  Regardless of the terrible mess GM Chris Ballard has done.  Colts owner Jim Irsay says,  he’s my man.  He will be back for next season.  The one decision I have no opinion on so far is maintaning Jeff Saturday as next years HC.  (Saturday is still up in the air.)  I would like to see how he does without someone like Ballard making all the player calls, and I am sure other things he has his thumb on.  I’m sure if Saturday had his say Ehlinger would have been playing instead of Ryan and Foles..  However with Ballard in the BIG seat.  Not doing what needs to be done to form a team.  Saturday will look like the scapegoat.  Thus protecting Irsay’s BUDDY; BALLARD.  The thing is how long does Jim Irsay want to continue fielding losing teams. NFL TRIVIA:   Which undefeated team did the Miami Dolphins beat to keep their “UNDEFEATED SEASON” , in tact in 1985?       (For the answer unscramble the letters just above the pick sheet). Answer: Chicago Bears For those of you who are new here. This is  how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT).  The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game.  EXAMPLE:  Say this week we have 16 games.  The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 16 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1.   You add up the TOTAL CORRECT PICKS.. That would be your score.  We use the Monday night (Last game played) as a TIE BREAKER.  The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. YOU can adopt the scoring  described above.  Or, the optional method.  A  negative score for missed games.  We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions.  EXAMPLE:   if you scored     1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pts on the second game and lost you would still have  1 pt. 1.  HOWEVER. with the same scenario new scoring system would result with a –14 score If we were playing this is how my sheet would look;  My pick will be in bold Capital letters.  you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting.  I will show my correct points in Bold I will fill in my picks Thursday.  Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use.  Or to see if you can beat me. NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 16 12/22-24-25-26/2022

COLTS: Benched Matt Ryan in favor of an aging Nick Foles.   Benching Ryan makes sense; should have been done way earlier.  In fact I can see no reason for the Colts to have signed him to begin with.  But, putting that aside,  would it not make more sense  to give the young Sam Ehlinger playing time.  Doing so would give him a better chance to prove himself.  Even if the Colts keep him as a backup QB.  He would have game experience if called upon during the next season.  Or give other teams a chance to appraise him for a trade.   Sometimes I think COMMON SENSE, is an unknown commodity among the Colts organization.  I am not terribly impressed with any of the college QBs this year.  For all practical purposes the Colts season is over.  Give Ehlinger a chance!
