Oly’s SENIOR GOLF WEEK 2. 2023
Got to the links again this week. My friend and I had been promising a friends grandson since last year we would take him with us sometime. We went to a new course I had never heard of before. But must say it is in better shape than our home course. Yes my friend beat me again. (But, remember he is about 7 years younger, recently retired, just this year. So is in better shape. He also plays twice a week, compared to my one time when he has the time). He beat me by 7 strokes. But I got him on net score. My handicap is pretty high SO I have the advantage there. Good old handicap. I am still somewhat erratic on my drives. But as when I played all the time my SHORT GAME, is my achilles heel. At least before I quit playing in 1988 my drives would usually give me an advantage by not having such long shots to be on the green. Now I don’t have that advantage. I really need to hit the practice green, the chipping green and driving range more. We had a really beautiful day to play. We played 18 holes that day. The only holes I didn’t break a tee were the par 3’s, (which I can always find a broken tee to shoot from. don’t laugh that little broken tee helps. Not much more than a 1/4 inch up. But it helps. I read that a round in the 120’s is a respectable score for anybody regardless of age. In fact that is where the majority of amateur golfers fall. The par for this course, is 72 with a slope rating of 122. Many big unprocessed tees out there. Water hazards on over half the holes. Even though we could use the senior tees, we don’t. We play on the second set of tees. Not the pro tees, the next ones up. The friends grandson did pretty good had his good holes and bad holes. Hit one way off the fairway and entered a farmer’s barn. But we had fun with him. We told him he could lay out of the barn and back onto the course with no penalty. After all there should not be a barn with an open door on the course. We looked in the rule book and there was no rule about barns with open doors, (had it been a regular player we would have enforced the out of bounds rule). He gave the excuse that the barn door was painted white like a hole, He just thought it was an extremely large hole. I wouldn’t mind playing there again, if it wasn’t so far out of the way. We originally planned to take him to a course that was only a few miles down the road where he lives. But when we got there we found it was closed, another victim of the diminishing golfing public. We played there last year. But like many small privately owned courses could not generate enough revenue to do the upkeep. One of the few around that still had sand traps. Great Hamburgers too. I was trying to figure how many courses near me have closed in the last 3-4 years. Ones that were premiere courses but fell victim to the economy. I counted at least 4 that were in a 20 mile radius of me. Now down to the dirty facts. I had at least 4 penalty strokes. And shot a 116 which translates to a net 65. Told you I like my net scores best. Final word. I never give nor expect a give me on any hole. I saw a scratch golfer miss a 6 inch putt. (can you say OVER CONFIDENT). I think next week my sons and I are going to tackle my old home course, which was designed to someday host a PGA tour event. Never happened. But has always been well maintained , Sand traps, Lots of woods, and water and a par 4 that is 1 yard short of being a par 5. Love this course. although I am told they flipped the front to the back nine and the back to the front. Still looking forward to it. I did play a scramble there about 16 years ago. My team won. I was a guest and it cost me nothing to play. As it was a Companies annual event, As a courtesy I was asked to play. (No prizes were given except for long drive and closest to the pin. I did find out that I had the longest drive. But disqualified myself because one of the Companies workers was about a yard behind me and in the fairway, I was in the rough. Until next time keep playing the COURSE and try to beat it not the other competitors. (More Fun), and easier to beat. Or so I have been told. Views: 113
NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 18 01/05-06/2023
BILLS/BENGALS: Monday game cancelled becoming a No Contest. it was determined by the NFL that the outcome of that game would have NO impact on playoff qualification for either team as both teams have clinched a playoff berth. Other than the fact that a win would have set up the Bills an opportunity to vie for the number 1 seed now held by the Chiefs. The commissioner has drawn up a number of possible scenarios for the owners to vote on that could even out the results that could come about by the cancellation. BILLS: Damar Hamlin breathing on his on. BILLS: Damar Hamlin now talking. One of the first things he asked, was “Did the Bills win?” The next step is removing him from the ventilator and have him breathing on his own. Full neurological recovery is expected. Ravens/Bengals game finally scheduled. Views: 95
NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 17 12/29 /2022 1-1-2/2023
NFL OFFICIAL: Art McNally, 97 died Sunday of natural causes. McNally an on field official for 9 years, including 1960-1967. Following which he was hired by the NFL to become Supervisor of Officials. During his term in this position he ushered in the INSTANT REPLAY. He over saw the training and technology used in the faster more technology complicated game. Bills / BENGALS GAME POSTPONED: Latest update Damar Hamlins is listed in Critical NFLCondition. Officially Hamlin suffered Cardiac Arrest. (Cardiac arrest usually results from an electrical disturbance in the heart. It’s not the same as a heart attack). UPDATE: Hsmlin vital signs back to normal. They have put him to sleep with a breathing tube down his throat. The Monday Night Football game between Buffalo and Cincinnati has been POSTPONED after Bills Safety Damar Hamlin. Hamlin 24 went down after tackling Bengals WR Tee Higgins, with 5:58 left in the 1st quarter. He He took a few steps then collapsed. It appeared medical personnel were giving him CPR. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital. No word on when or if the game will be resumed. Our prayers are with Damar Hamlin. So far the only scheduled game for week 18 are for Saturday. Chiefs @ Chargers 16:30 on ESPN/ABC. At 20:15 we will have Titans @ Jaguars also on ESPN/ABC. No other games scheduled time wise. Although we know the pairings time, date, and network remain unscheduled at this time. NO BYES . . OFF THE SUBJECT OF NFL: WNBA. CONVICTED of drug TRAFFICKING, and sentenced to NINE years of prison. PHOENIX MERCURYS, PRIVILEGED player will RECEIVE Full Pay for a season not played .and league credit just as if played. Making eligible for free agency for the 2023 season. If another player was found to merely using drugs, they would have been at suspended for some amount of time, along with a fine. BUT, some people are just PRIVILEGED, and the rules that apply to others is ABOVE the rules. COLTS: Regardless of the terrible mess GM Chris Ballard has done. Colts owner Jim Irsay says, he’s my man. He will be back for next season. The one decision I have no opinion on so far is maintaning Jeff Saturday as next years HC. (Saturday is still up in the air.) I would like to see how he does without someone like Ballard making all the player calls, and I am sure other things he has his thumb on. I’m sure if Saturday had his say Ehlinger would have been playing instead of Ryan and Foles.. However with Ballard in the BIG seat. Not doing what needs to be done to form a team. Saturday will look like the scapegoat. Thus protecting Irsay’s BUDDY; BALLARD. The thing is how long does Jim Irsay want to continue fielding losing teams. NFL TRIVIA: Which undefeated team did the Miami Dolphins beat to keep their “UNDEFEATED SEASON” , in tact in 1985? (For the answer unscramble the letters just above the pick sheet). Answer: Chicago Bears For those of you who are new here. This is how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game. EXAMPLE: Say this week we have 16 games. The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 16 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1. You add up the TOTAL CORRECT PICKS.. That would be your score. We use the Monday night (Last game played) as a TIE BREAKER. The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. YOU can adopt the scoring described above. Or, the optional method. A negative score for missed games. We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions. EXAMPLE: if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pts on the second game and lost you would still have 1 pt. 1. HOWEVER. with the same scenario new scoring system would result with a –14 score If we were playing this is how my sheet would look; My pick will be in bold Capital letters. you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting. I will show my correct points in Bold I will fill in my picks Thursday. Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use. Or to see if you can beat me. COLTS: Benched Matt Ryan in favor of an aging Nick Foles. Benching Ryan makes sense; should have been done way earlier. In fact I can see no reason for the Colts to have signed him to begin with. But, putting that aside, would it not make more sense to give the young Sam Ehlinger playing time. Doing so would give him a better chance to prove himself. Even if the Colts keep him as a backup QB. He would have game experience if called upon during the next season. Or give other teams a chance to appraise him for a trade. Sometimes I think COMMON SENSE, is an unknown commodity among the Colts organization. I am not terribly impressed with any of the college QBs this year. For all practical purposes the Colts season is over. Give Ehlinger a chance! Views: 127

NFL WEEK 1 09/08-11-12/2022 with RULE CHANGES IN 2022 SEASON
Welcome to our 11 th year doing these Confident picks. NOTE: Former WASHINGTON REDSKINS/FOOTBALL TEAM, is now known by the name WASHINGTON COMMANDERS. (If you aren’t interested in the rule changes I found. Please scroll down for this weeks PICK SHEET) These are the only ones I could find. There could be others. Overtime playoff rules The most important rules changes in 2022 relate to overtime playoff rules. NFL overtime rules have been controversial for several years. That controversy boiled over last season when the Chiefs beat the Bills in overtime without Buffalo touching the ball despite leading with 13 seconds left in regulation. That will no longer be possible starting with the 2022 playoffs, although it’s important to keep in mind that overtime in regulation will not be changed. These alterations will only come into play during the playoffs. First, both teams will get at least one chance to possess the ball in overtime unless the first drive of overtime ends in a defensive safety. After both teams have had one possession, if one team has more points, they are the winner. If the game remains tied after both teams have possessed the ball, the next score will win the game. Meanwhile, if the 15-minute period expires with the score tied or the second team’s initial possession still ongoing, another 15-minute period will be played. That means the team that possesses the ball second doesn’t have to worry about the clock. They just have to make sure that the game is at least tied at the end of their initial overtime possession. Also, if there are multiple overtime periods, the teams will switch sides after the first and third overtime periods. The timing rules for the second overtime period are the same as the second quarter of regulation and the timing rules for the fourth overtime period are the same as the fourth quarter of regulation. Roster cut down There will also be some adjustments to the preseason roster cutdown in 2022. At the start of training camp, teams can have 90 players on their roster, or 91 if they have an international roster. On August 16, following the first full week of preseason games, rosters must be cut to 85 players. On August 23, following the second full week of preseason games, rosters should be cut to 80 players. By August 30, rosters should be cut to 53 players, which is the roster limit during the regular season. Extended ramp-up period During training camp in 2022, the NFL has increased how much time teams can practice in full-speed sessions, meaning no restrictions for wearing pads or hitting. On August 16, following the first full week of preseason games, rosters must be cut to 85 players. On August 23, following the second full week of preseason games, rosters should be cut to 80 players. By August 30, rosters should be cut to 53 players, which is the roster limit during the regular season. During training camp in 2022, the NFL has increased how much time teams can practice in full-speed sessions, meaning no restrictions for wearing pads or hitting. Free kick formation The experimental rule changes on free kicks that were tested during the 2021 season have been approved and made permanent. It dictates that before the ball is kicked on a free kick, all 11 players on the receiving team should be lined up inbounds and behind their restraining line. Meanwhile, a minimum of eight players but a maximum of nine players should be standing between their restraining line and 15 yards behind their restraining line. This area is referred to as the setup zone. Injured Reserve rules For diehard fans who track injuries closely and keep tabs on players who are added to the injured reserve (IR) list, there are some notable changes in 2022. During the past two seasons, the NFL allowed an unlimited number of players to return to the active roster from IR. But this was done primarily to help players deal with the pandemic and the unpredictable nature of COVID cases. However, only eight players on each team will be allowed to return from IR to the active roster. Individual players can be moved from IR to the active roster a maximum of two times during the season. But that player will count twice toward the limit of eight. Meanwhile, the time frame that a player must stay on IR has increased. Recently, any player placed on IR had to stay there for a minimum of three weeks before being eligible to return to the active roster. In 2022, that time frame has increased to four weeks, making it a little more challenging for teams to place a player with a short-term injury on IR. Practice Squad management The size of NFL practice squads is growing in 2022. Teams can now have up to 16 practice squad players, which is up from 12. Of those 16 players, six can be veterans with no restrictions on how long a player has been in the league to qualify for the practice squad. The veteran limit was also six years last year, but the increase is now permanent from four veterans on the practice squad in 2020. Meanwhile, teams can elevate practice squad players to the active roster up to three times during the season without them needing to pass through waivers, making them available to the rest of the league. On game days, up to two players from the practice squad can be placed on the active roster and then returned to the practice squad the following day without being exposed to waivers. Of course, if two players from the practice squad are elevated on game day, seven players must be deactivated from the roster to ensure there are only 48 active players listed 90 minutes before kickoff. estricted Free Agent. For those of you who are new here. This is how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office… Continue reading NFL WEEK 1 09/08-11-12/2022 with RULE CHANGES IN 2022 SEASON
PRO GOLFERS PGA LIV
Because I did not play, practice, or buy anything GOLF this week; I am going to make a COMMENT on the above mentioned subject. First let’s agree that MOST of the LIV Golfers have played in and made their name either in the PGA or one of it’s affiliates. Thus making them owing some kind of allegiance to those identities. Let’s also agree those groups do not have a contract guaranteeing them a set salary or benefits. (LIV Does pretty much guarantee them “X” amount of money, $120,000.oo per appearance in an event; I believe. PLUS a “signing bonus to play in all events). By not having an “EMPLOYER”, all Pro Golfers must be considered as “INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS’. Now, I don’t mean to confuse anyone. Being an independent contractor gives them the right to choose what events, except in the LIV, (where they HAVE CONTRACTED to play in all events). Even by PGA standards the can opt what events, they play in. (I really don’t know, but, I think they are required to play in a minimum of events to maintain membership). PGA, being an a NON-profit organization, ORGANIZES most of the events known as the PGA TOUR in the U.S.A. The PGA TOUR has a Board of Directors, who have the ability to admit or not admit players into the organization. (As I understand it). Which would mean they have the right to accept or deny INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, as they see fit. They have the right to suspend players for JUST CAUSE. That being said. IF a member chooses to not play in an event does that constitute, JUST CAUSE. If it does, all player members could be ousted or suspended, for missing any event. As I understand it members who play in the LIV schedule, are merely suspended at this time, except the ones who resigned. Wrapping things up. I am not an attorney, so I can’t say what the legalities are. I believe it would be to the PGA’s advantage to have these players we all know the names of, and, associate with the PGA at their events. Face it! if you were offered more money to play a few games of golf a year, than you had made in 30 years, YOU think you would turn it down. Forget the rhetoric of “Saudi Blood Money.” I don’t know what their reason for starting LIV is. Maybe they really do want to paint a new picture of a new Saudi. Right or wrong I seem to always give someone a second chance. I don’t even know how many chances they have been given. The thing is….they have a very good product. I like the 54 hole idea. It gives the players more family time. As you get older family time means more. I like the team aspect. I like the more relaxed atmosphere presented at events. (Although I don’t know that as a player, in the last event, on the final hole knowing that one putt could be worth a half a million dollars)! Thanks, Oly P.S. Don’t forget Wayne’s NFL Confidence Picks coming up next month. Views: 73
