NCAA MARCH MADNESS TOURNAMENT. Right now it appears that Kentucky will receive the overall number one seed. Which guarantees them the easiest path to the final four. Here is where I make many of you mad. Might just as well get it out of the way right now. After careful consideration I predict KENTUCKY will be the first NUMBER ONE seed out. Kentucky is a good team and appears as of now they will go undefeated in regular season. But if you look at their schedule…..WHO have they played. A few teams that may be in the Tournament. But looking at their overall schedule, it has been pretty much of a soft schedule. In other years it could have been a tough schedule. But this year, well it was a disappointment. All teams have these years….maybe. But it may work out for them. While they have pretty much coasting, and other teams have been going toe to toe. They may be the most rested team entering the Tournament. Is it possible for a team with a losing record be in the BIG DANCE? Just ask MEAC Tournament Champion Hampton Pirates. With a 16-17 record. The answer is yes. Can they wear the Glass Slipper? What is a seed? Merely a starting place. Although unlikely, IT is possible for two 16 seeds to meet in the final game. Would lets say Kentucky were to be seeded as a number 16. They would still have to win all games to be CHAMPION ! OKAY. so I was wrong Villanova was first number 1 out. So That makes Kentucky 2nd Number 1 seed out. I called it right the second time!! Kentucky was the second number 1 out. They did play well. But their weak regular season schedule did not prepare them for the stronger teams. It took a last second desperation shot to overcome Notre Dame. But Wisconsin’s tough season made them ready. The behavior of the Kentucky “FANS” back in Kentucky I am sure did not reflect the feelings of the Wildcat Coaches and Players. However their acts do reflect back to them, the University, and The STATE. I still do not understand this type of childish behavior. It does not change the outcome of the game. Maybe “TOO Much ALCOHOL” is an excuse. But that would be all it was. NOT A REASON! Kentucky did make it a lot farther than I expected. Hats off to Kentucky Team for not quitting. Maybe next year (for a change) they will return with experienced players, and not have to rely on Freshmen. Here is to next year Kentucky. Season is over. Congratulations to DUKE. It is hard to say one bad call changes the outcome of a game. However a couple of bad calls and NO CALLS. Can alter a game. In what I saw was DUKE get more than their share the last 3 minutes of the game. I saw them commit charges that were mis -called BLOCKS. I saw Duke throw up there forearms to clear space. I really think the REFS let the game get out of control. Of course You can make the excuse that they were letting the teams play. HOWEVER, the Most Questionable Non Call was with about 2 minutes +/-. It was plenty obvious the Ball went out last touched by DUKE’s Winslow I think. I am not really good with names. But no one can say for sure if that really made a big difference, DOWN by 5. It would have given the BADGERS a chance to score and cut the lead by 2 or 3, (if they scored). This could have changed the momentum, or not. Who can say? But it is over no going back. I WANT TO POINT OUT THAT UNLIKE KENTUCKY, I SAW NO BEHAVIOR ON THE PART OF EITHER TEAMS FANS. (hope I’m not speaking too soon). But Hats off to them for showing maturity. Well THAT IS HOW I SEE IT. Check back for other articles throughout the year. Maybe some Public Service Announcements, or who knows what may strike my fancy. Maybe a few sports articles. but I Just have not been able to get into baseball since the strike which brought about the PED thing when they allowed Mark McGuire to hit those home runs to generate interest in the game. Just like the NBA let MJ get by with making his own rules to create interest in their arena. I can’t really call them sports any more. But will be back with our usual Football coverage. ADULTS DESIRES GIVE BLACK EYE TO CHILDRENS DREAMS
I liken the hoax pulled by the ADULTS, behind the Chicago JACKIE ROBINSON WEST, LITTLE LEAGUE SCAM, as a form of child abuse. It is a shame when ADULTS, place their own pride, if you can call it that. Let’s say it is a shame when ADULTS, place their DESIRES, above the ideals founded behind something as noble as LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL. These ideals have been a long time basis for children to compete, and have fun all over the USA, as well as other countries. The sense of playing a game you love. Playing all out to overcome your opponent and get the “W”. But also enjoying the competition if you happen to get the “L”. Let me interject here. The one thing I hate in Sports is the word LOST. Few players are losers. Losers don’t leave all they have on the field of play. So it is one thing to get BEAT. Which means you gave it all you had, you just got out played. If you are a loser you know it, and you have to live with it. But if you get BEAT; keep your head up. Nothing to be ashamed of . Somewhere in the case of the Chicago Little League Organization, The adult leaders of this scam became lost. I don’t know if it was a money thing, (hoping to bring their area to the forefront, and amass some kind of new income for the area. Maybe their thinking was to gain some publicity for the program and maybe gain more backing for the area’s Little League Organization. I just don’t know what their thinking was. What I do know is the result was a big BLACK EYE for Chicago, Little League, and YES even our hero JACKIE ROBINSON. What a tragedy for all. But the biggest loss of all was the lain on the KIDS. The Kids who, I am sure were unaware of the way the the Adults behind the scam were using them. All the kids were good players, and seemed to be good sportsmen, (you always have one or two who, although truly good sports will let their exuberance get out of hand and appear to have a bad effect. You have this in all walks of life and at any age. But truly good sports regret it if they see it). I feel these kids most likely feel betrayed, by their adult leaders. Now instead of the adulation of many, these children will most likely feel the scorn, for the ACTIONS of the adults involved. Will those Adults? Most likely not. They will shed it like water off a ducks back. My Message to those kids, is BE BIGGER THAN THOSE adults. Learn from their mistakes and don’t repeat them. You were used as a tool for the EGOS of your Adult leaders. You will all be grown, and no one will think about your participation, only that there was a wonder team assembled, but by unscrupulous men. To the team who fell victim to the ruse. All I can say is I’m Sorry. We will never know if any one of the teams knocked out of competition by this scam, could have went on to win the “LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES”. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not taking anything away from the eventual Champions. They worked hard to get there, and they beat the Chicago team. I am aware of these things going on all over the place. I recall a few years ago witnessing it. It was a 12 year and under tournament. A team from Lexington Ky. came up and played. I can’t prove they were older. But most of them were 6 feet tall (at least). Some had mustaches. One had a little boy come up and (maybe called him Andy), but to the most of us around it sounded like Daddy. But boy could they hit. The game was played on an oversize field. These kids. many of them. were hitting one bouncers to the 308 foot left field fence. Needless to say they went undefeated through the tournament. In closing let me say the National Little League Association did all they could to atone for the mess. Let’s just hope everyone learned a lesson from this unfortunate event. That Is How I See It. SUPER BOWL XLIX FEB. 01, 2015
UPDATE: NFL has found 11 of the 12 balls used Sunday against the Colts, were indeed under inflated. I guess the Patriots were afraid of the Colts beating them. Not that they had to as it turned out. What punishment would be appropriate? We know the answer. FORFEIT TO THE COLTS. But they won’t go that far. Any thing less will be merely a slap on the wrist. After all the MARKETING MONIES, and PUBLICITY for advancing to the Super Bowl will way out weigh any other punishment. Suspension of William Stephen “Bill” Belichick. No problem. Given the teams history, they will most likely find a way for him to watch and get plays to the other coaches. Speaking of the other coaches, who have been with Belichick long enough to know how he would call the game any way. Maybe suspending QB Tom Brady, TE Rob Gronkowski, Place Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, Punter Ryan Allen, and of course RB LaGarrette Blount. But suspending players would not really be fair to those players or the rest of the team. What ever punishment handed should have a HUGE impact on the Patriots bottom line. HOW ABOUT Forfeiture of all income springing from their advancement to and including Their SUPER BOWL appearance. (excluding the players pay. Of Course). Plus any sanctions NFL chooses to place on Future Draft Picks, etc.etc. We all know MONEY is what PROFESSIONAL SPORTS IS ALL ABOUT! We have now reached the BIGGEST game of the season….. “SUPER BOWL” !!!!!. Two great teams, Two great Quarter Backs, with a great supporting cast. Yes the QB’s usually take the praise when his team wins. But he is also called upon to bear the burden when his team gets beat. Just like the Pitcher on a Baseball team. BUT, in FOOTBALL. There are many teams. Offense, Defense, Special Teams, Back up Player, Practice Teams, Coaching Team, and lets not forget that all important team……the 12 th man team. Everyone of these teams are just as important as the other. The OFFENSE, plays its game to MOVE the ball down field, and SCORE points. The DEFENSE, plays its game to STOP the movement down the field, and if the opportunity arises, STEAL the ball away. (Just like in Basketball). Then in semi-rare occasions SCORE points. Kind of makes it seem like the DEFENSE does most of the work and gets a passing note of praise, for a win. The SPECIAL TEAMS. Are a combination of OFFENSE and DEFENSE. They are the SPECIALISTS, as the name implies. They can return kickoffs, or receive punts, or play for the onside kick. They include the KICKERS, SETTERS, RETURNERS, and anything else they may be asked to do. The PRACTICE TEAM, is that unknown group, which plays one of the most important roles on the team. They don’t make the big money, the game time players make. (Perhaps $100,000.00 a a year). What many people don’t realize is the Practice Team must mimic every opponent their team may face in a season. After all, how would the Patriots practice against the Seahawks, and vice-versa. If you think that is easy, try being a different team every week. The BACK UP Team. The Subs, the Bench warmers. The men who sit on the sidelines hoping to someday get into a real game. They must be ready at any moment to enter the game and play up to the same standards as the starters. While on the sidelines they must be cheerleaders, spirit lifters, if you will. It can’t be easy waiting to get in a game, (most likely; even if un-concioiusly hoping for something to happen to the starter to afford them their chance), to be that support group. The Coaching Team. Held together by the HEAD COACH. Each coach has his speciality. They are the ones who decides the plays, trains the players, and inspires them to succeed. Of course if you ask any one of them HIS job is the most important coaching position on the team. But the Head coach is the one who acts as referee, and maintains the peace among this group. I’m sure the Offensive Co-ordinator, makes most of the offensive play calls, just as the Defensive Co-Ordinator, makes the decisions on defensive plays. Etc.Etc. on down the line. But the Head Coach is the ultimate decision maker. NOW. We come to that all important 12 th MAN TEAM. They are sometimes called the “Boosters”, because that is what they do. They give the team that extra BOOST. Cheering them on to work harder, Applauding them when they make good plays. Supporting the team by buying the game tickets, concessions, and the various souvenirs, and Team apparel. They make noise to drown out the opposing teams signals, and hush up so their team can be heard and on the same wavelength. On one hand you have the seasoned veteran, TOM BRADY. On the other hand you have that “undersized” QB, RUSSEL WILSON, who is in his THRD year. BUT…. by the way already has one Super Bowl Championship under his belt. HUH? Can that be right. The QB most teams thought was to short to play that position effectively? YEP. That be him. (Not to brag or anything. But if you check my post of Jan. 13, 2012. Colts 1st Round Draft Pick Is…. I had Wilson as a TOP 3 Pick: in my eyes the most capable of the three). Can he be the QB with 2 Super Bowl Championships in a career of 3 years. This should be the BEST Super Bowl in MANY years. But there is always that unknown phantom that can come in and just make the game a blow out. As my Dad, always said. “HOPE FOR THE BEST, AND EXPECT THE WORSE”. As of this writing the odds makers in Las Vegas, have made no move as to odds and who they think will win. Right now it is just… Continue reading SUPER BOWL XLIX FEB. 01, 2015
NFL Conference Play Championships Confidence Picks Jan 18 2015
COMMENTS: Biggest Blown Call.. The reversal of Dez Bryant REVERSAL. I replayed the action numerous times. I had others observe it and we all agreed no doubt he had control. switched hands, stretched to cross line and scored a TD. But apparently scoring a TD is not considered completing a play in the NFL. Then you look at the TD in the College Playoff. Oregon players TD counted. But I can’t understand how he could have had control when he had like one finger touching the end of the ball when crossed the line. Oh well two different games. I know most of you aren’t playing the “pool” any more. What we did when I ran the company pool, was raised the entry fee. AND heavily relied on the Tie Breaker. Enjoy the rest of the season. I don’t care for the “PRO BOWL” so you won’t see any posts on that. But now we are down to the final four. We should be able to see an all out effort by all teams. Hopefully it will be more like the NCAA division 3 (I think it was). VERY,VERY few flags. They let them play. Enjoyed that game immensely. For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game. EXAMPLE: Say this week we have 17 games. The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 17 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1. We use the Monday night game as a TIE BREAKER. The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. If we were playing this is how my sheet would look; My pick will be in bold Capital letters. you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting. I will show my correct points in Bold This year I am making a change in the scoring. YOU can adopt the new scoring or continue to use the old scoring. This year we get a negative score for missed games. We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions. EXAMPLE: LAST YEAR if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pt on the second game and was wrong you would still have a Positive 1. HOWEVER. this year the same scenario would result with a -14 score. I will fill in my picks Friday. Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use. NFL Divisional Playoffs Jan. 10-11,2014. Confidence Picks
We had a fun week this last weekend. We had one very good game. One out of 4, means we had 25% good games, and 75% not so good. I would have to call the Ravens win over the Steelers a surprise. Perhaps not an upset. The Interstate match up of the Bengals, and Colts, came off as I suspected. One would think this would be a big rivalry. From Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, is a mere 112 mile drive. Just a bit over 2 hours apart. But for some reason, that rivalry never seem to materialize.(Just for those who do not know. Lucas Oil Stadium is also 181 miles from Chicago’s Soldiers Field. about a 4 hour drive. I imagine the fans of those two teams would love to see more games between the two….but not very likely. Before the Colts came to town and the Bengals existed “Da Bears” were Indiana’s HOME TEAM). Had Arizona been totally healthy, I little doubt they would have advanced. …..But, that is why I picked Carolina. There was little doubt in anybody’s mind the Cowboys, would triumph over Detroit. Yeah I know some of you will bring up the so-called “CONSPIRACY CALL”. The way I saw the play the on field reversal was the correct call. The only problem was the OFFICIALS failed to talk the call over before announcing it. BUT how about: who was it Dez Bryant? Or some Cowboy went onto the field without a HELMET. That should have been an infraction, but the officials merely told him to go back to the bench. Not only did he not have a helmet, but as far as I was concerned it put a 12th man on the field who was neither entering to play, or leaving after a play. Let me assure you I am not a Cowboys, or Lions fan. Thus that makes me an “IMPARTIAL OBSERVER”. Now we are down to what we call the Elite Eight. Congratulations to all teams who made it this far. For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. NFL Playoff Wild Card Confidence Picks Week 1 Jan.3-4,2015
I must say I was somewhat surprised by my own results this week. Just in: Buffalo Bills coach DOUG MARRONE has opted out of his contract. The out clause was activated by he sale of the team. Could a short hop to the N.Y. Jets be in order? Now we are at the CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES. “SUPER BOWL”. Last weeks HIGHLIGHTS: Houston’s J.J. Watt, became the only 2 time player to record 20 sacks in a season. To top it off his 20th sack also scored a SAFETY. Tampa Bay Buccaneers “won” the first pick for next years draft. Both Tennessee Titans, and Tampa Bay tied with a 2-14 record. HOWEVER the tie breaker ( whichever team whose opponents had the lowest winning percentage) favored the Bucs. Miami Dolphins Lamar Miller carried the ball from the 3 yd. line for a 97 yard TD. and cap 1000 yard season. Longest run was in 1983 when Cowboy TONY DORSETT, ran 99 yds. Following Dorsett is Green Bay Packers’ RB Ahman Green. Green ran a 98 yd. TD in 2003. In 1939 Packer Andy Urham also ran a 97 yd. TD. As of this writing, we know of 4 coaches who have been relieved of duty. First is the Jets’ Rex Ryan. Ryan has not finished above 500 the last 4 seasons. Will he land at Chicago? Atlanta Coach Mike Smith is looking for another job. Smith went 10-22 the last 2 seasons, and was 1-4 in post season. Chicago Bears’ Coach Marc Trestman, with a 5-11 season is out. So is Bears’ GM Phil Emery. I think this is a much needed move. I think, there should be more releases up the ladder. Jay Cutler took the blame much of the season for the Bears poor performance. However in all the games I watched the ENTIRE TEAM, Seemed somewhat amiss. I saw no real heart in their actions on the field. I’m not saying Cutler is the caliber player he is being paid as…. BUT I would most likely give him another year under new leadership. Then we come to San Francisco 49’ers. Will they be able to replace Jim Harbaugh. Probably not. But, the way I see it. Winning is secondary to 49’ers management. Much like the Indianapolis Colts when Jim Irsay took over. Irsay wanted to tell the coaches who to play what plays to run, etc. etc. It wasn’t until he learned to trust his coaching staff that the Colts started to do any good. I believe San Francisco’s management staff have yet to learn that lesson. AND we all know JIM HARBAUGH is no YES MAN! GOOD LUCK AT MICHIGAN COACH HARBAUGH. One last note. WHAT TEAM FINISHED THE SEASON WITHOUT A TD BY A WR? ….Kansas City Chiefs. Of course. NFL Week 17 Confidence Picks Dec. 28, 2014
WHOA! What a week. I always hate this time of the season. You never know if a team will play to win, or to rest players. It appeared this week most teams played for the win. I would suspect that most teams will play to win this week. The closeness of so many teams much weighs heavy on them this week. Although I don’t like it. I think it is right. We could see an 11+ team not reach the play offs; and a possible 8- team in. To me; it does show parity in the conferences, (not necessarily in the leagues). Some of you may think a re-alignment is in order. But, then, maybe two years down the road the weaker teams get stronger and the strong teams get weaker. Then what? Re-align again. No! I believe it will work out in the long run. It is too bad that a team that works hard and has a better record may be left out. 2014 NFL Team Schedule For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). NFL Week 16 Confidence Picks Dec. 18-20-21-22, 2014
Pretty good week for me. How did you do? Larry Fitzgerald, 31, became the youngest player in NFL history by more than a year to reach the 900-catch plateau, breaking the previous mark of the Houston Texans‘ Andre Johnson, who was 32 when he reached 900. On the next play, Fitzgerald caught pass No. 901. I was talking to a friend Saturday morning, He claims to know little about sports. He told me he had a feeling Washington and San Diego would both win. LOL. Well maybe there is something to Gut instincts after all. 2014 NFL Team Schedule For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explainbu. I will show my correct points in Bold This year I am making a change in the scoring. YOU can adopt the new scoring or continue to use the old scoring. This year we get a negative score for missed games. We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions. EXAMPLE: LAST YEAR if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pt on the second game you would still have a Positive 1. HOWEVER. this year the same scenario would result with a -14 score. I will fill in my picks Thursday. Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use. Or to see if you can beat me. NFL Week 15 Confidence Picks Dec. 11-14-15
OFF THE SUBJECT: RE: BIG 12 Exclusion from the BIG Playoff. YOU did it yourself. You tried a sneaky move. Hoping to increase your chances of advancing to the “FINAL FOUR”. By not declaring a clear champion, (by your own rules), YOU did yourself in. ON the other hand WAS WISCONSIN really that off against OHIO ST. Not to say anything. This is merely MY WONDERINGS. Had the game been closer, or Wisconsin won. Would OHIO ST. have made it to the “FINAL FOUR”? Just wondering. I don’t know. WHAT is up with Oakland? Did they just realize the FOOTBALL season was upon us? 2014 NFL Team Schedule For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explainbu. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game. EXAMPLE: Say this week we have 17 games. The team you are most confident will win you would ssign the number 17 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1. NFL Confidence Picks Week 14 Dec 04-07-08,2014
Just another week. A surprisingly good game was the Jaguars win over the Giants. An expected close game but I was a little taken aback by the defeat of the Giants. Wasn’t it the Buccaneers who had 12 men on the field to rob themselves of a FG which would have given them a huge upset of the Bengals ? One standout point was the fact we had 5 games decided by a FG or less. In fact 3 of those games had a 1 point margin. 2014 NFL Team Schedule For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explainbu.
