If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT).  The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game.  EXAMPLE:  Say this week we have 16 games.  The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 16 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1.   You add up the TOTAL CORRECT PICKS.. That would be your score.  We use the Monday night (Last game played) as a TIE BREAKER.  The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. YOU can adopt the scoring  described above.  Or, the optional method.  A  negative score for missed games.  We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions.  EXAMPLE:   if you scored     1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pts on the second game and lost you would still have  1 pt. 1.  HOWEVER. with the same scenario new scoring system would result with a –14 score If we were playing this is how my sheet would look;  My pick will be in bold Capital letters.  you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting.  I will show my correct points in Bold I will fill in my picks Thursday.  Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use.  Or to see if you can beat me. TRIVIA:  What QB, threw 167 TDs in his 20’s.  Now has a chance to throw more TDs in his 40’s?  ANSWER:   A rookie in 2000 at 23 .  He became the starting QB at age 24 and threw 167 TDs before turning  30.  Currently he has thrown 154 in his 40’s.  Following him are Drew  Brews with 57.  Brett Favre with 41. Warren Moon with 37 and Vinny Testaverde with 24.   TYMDOARB  (Unscramble the letters if haven’t figured it out.    SIDE NOTE:  BASEBALL:  Say goodbye to the Cleveland Indians.  They will now become the Cleveland GUARDIANS.  (my take on the whole subject remains the same.  With the removal of the Indians name, we move one step closer to forgetting that the people we call INDIANS [by a misnomer, because Christopher Columbus: for example: thought they had landed in INDIA]; WERE in fact the people who owned this great country.  Generations,  or less than a generation will forget they existed.  Just like the removal of  Confederate statues, UH-OH the Civil War never happened. WE never had SLAVERY here.  NEWS:  NFL states it is pleased with it’s “TAUNTING”  rule and has no plans to alter it.  I think  I speak for most fans when I say it is a very poor rule as it statnds.  Tom Brady’s take on the rule is that there is nothing the players, fans,  or coaches can do about it.  To sum up Tom Brady says, “…NFL’s new taunting rule STINKS” BEARS:  QB Justin Fields will make 1st start for BEARS, while QB, Andy Dalton recovers from knee injury.  HC: All QBs being considered for week 4 start. For those of you who are new here. This is  how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 2 NFL 09/16-19-20-/2021

i CERTAINLY HOPE YOU HAD A BETTER WEEK THAN I DID! TRIVIA QUESTION:   How much do practice squad players make? ANSWER: 2 years or less $9,200 a week for 18 weeks, ($165,600 a season).  MORE than 2 years earn a minimum $14,000 a week, ($225,000 a year). We certainly seen some bad calls last week.  One was when a player was called for “TAUNTING” for saying something to the opposition who slapped his face mask.  Another comes to mind with a “ROUGHING THE PASSER”  which was just incidental normal contact.  I am sure there were more,  but those were the only 2 i actually saw.  We saw two OT games.  And 2 games decided by 3 or less points. (One was a mere 1 pt difference).  QUESTION:  What do you think of the “TAUNTING” rule?   This week we saw a “TAUNTING” infraction for SPINNING A FOOTBALL, flashing the INCOMPLETE SIGN, CLAPPING, FLEXING.  It seems to me this is not a good rule as it stands.  Maybe for more extreme cases.  But it is being called for frivolous things.  Besides this is “ADULTS”.   Granted adults should be above such behavior.  But on the  other hand “ADULTS”,  be able to handle minor taunting.   It appears more FANS, are disapproving of this rule.   I would recommend the NFL fine tune this rule to only approve the call for more major issues.  What do you think? NEWS: 49ers: RB,  Raheem Mostert out with season ending knee surgery. COWBOYS:  DE, DeMarcus  Lawrence  to a broken foot, (more specifically a broken 5th metatarsal). Suffered in practice. Surgery will be needed and he is expected to be return by November.                         WR:  Michael Gallup, expected to miss at least the next month. (calf).     RT:  La’El Collins suspended 5 games for violation of leagues substance abuse policy.        DE: Ramdu Gragpry tested positive for COVID. GIANTS: Will be missing this week LB: Cam Brown (hamstring).      TE: Evan Engram (calf),                                       G: Shane Lemieux, (knee).      RB: Saquon Barkley is questionable (knee). PACKERS:  RB: Za’Darius Smith placed on IR, (back), for Sunday’s game.  RAIDERS: QB, Marcus Mariota is expected to miss multiple weeks after aggravating a quadriceps injury during his lone snap of Las Vegas’ overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens. Mariota is presumed to return by Halloween.    RB: Josh Jacobs, out for Sunday game. (toe/ankle injury).    Have filed an OFFICIAL COMPLAINT, with NFL citing, “ALL DIRTY HITS”  on WR Hunter Renfrow by Raven last Monday.   SAINTS: Plan to return to New Orleans after week 3.  DE: Marcus Davenport, (shoulder), and LB: Kwon Alexander (elbow), on IR. They can return after 3 weeks.  (per NFL’s updated COVID-19 roster rules.    7 offensive assistants Jim Chaney, Declan Doyle, Phil Galiano, Curtis Johnson, Brendan Nugent, Dan Roushar, and Joel Thomas will not be in attendance for the team’s game against the Carolina Panthers, due to to COVID-19 protocols.   49’ers and SAINTS:   Former San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints DE:  Parys Haralson has died at 37 years old.  Haralson played his college years at University  Tennessee, where he was captain, his senior year.  He played for the 49’ers from 2006-2012, and played for the Saints 2016-2018.  Haralson posted 267 Tackles, and 28 sacks. LIONS and RAMS: DT: Roger Brown died today at age 84.  Brown, a graduate of Maryland State College was drafted by both the NFL and AFL   He played with the LIONS from 1960-1966, and finished his career with the Rams 1967-1969.   Brown played in the College All Star game in Chicago VS. Baltimore Colts. Mr. Brown was named Defensive Outstanding Lineman in 1962.  He tied a  1932 record for  single season, individual Safeties.  (He sacked both Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas for safeties.  In the 1962 game dubbed the Thanksgiving Massacre, against the PACKERS. Sacking Bart Starr 7 times, including a safety.  Brown was a member of the original FEARSOME FOURSOME, With Alex Karras,  Sam Williams, and Darris McCord.   He made 6 Pro Bowls 1962-1967.  Also a LIONS  RING OF HONOR  in 2018.  While with the RAMS, Roger Brown, Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy, and Merlin Olsen, made the most feared defensive line(at that time) the  “FEARSOME FOURSOME”. NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 1 NFL 09/09-12-13/2021

Welcome to our 10 th year doing these Confident picks. VIKINGS:  Hall of Fame member. and Nebraska graduate Mick Tinglelhoff  died Saturday at age 81.  Tinglehoff played 17 years with the Vikings, starting 240 straight games, made 6 Pro Bowls,(1964-1969,) and 5 All Pro selection, (1964,65,66,68,and 69.  He was a member of the 1969 NFL Champion Team.      BUCCANEERS: Center Ryan Jensen draws 1st penalty for “TAUNTING”   Recipient of the TAUNT,  was Cowboys, DL Carolos Watkins.  Watkins slapped Jensen in the facemask (after the play), and got a penalty of his own.  It was whatever Jensen said to Watkins after the slap, that drew the “taunting penalty” ,  Sounds like a bad call to me.   Looked like Watkins was the one doing the taunting.  Any red blooded athlete would say somethng to his attacker.      DOES this put him in the “RECORDS BOOK”? STEELERS:  SIGN CONTRACT WITH PR, (Pass Rusher) T.J.(Watt to a four-year extension worth over  $112 million with $80 million of it guaranteed at signing. UPDATE: Week 15, two of five designated matchups will be played on Saturday with the remainder to be played on Sunday. Specific dates and start times for such designated Week 15 matchups will be determined and announced no later than four weeks prior to game day.  Week 18, two games will be played on Saturday, one at 4:30 PM ET and one at 8:15 PM ET with the remainder to be played on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM ET and 4:25 PM ET, and one matchup to be played on Sunday night at 8:20 PM ET. Specific dates and start times for Week 18 matchups will be determined and announced following the conclusion of Week 17. We probably will see several records toppled this season.  How will the NFL handle this?  With an extra game, beginning this season, means 1 more game to surpass records set by the likes of :  Manning’s 5,477 yards. Manning’s 55 touchdowns.   Brees’ 471 completions.                  Dickerson’s 2,105 yards, Chris Johnson’s 2,509 scrimmage yards.                                              Calvin Johnson’s 1,964 receiving  yards. Thomas’ 149 receptions. Strahan’s 22.5 sacks.   Akers’ 166 points.   Luck’s 4,374 yards. PERSONAL NOTE:  I still think the Colts erred by signing Carson Wentz.  If he stays healthy, I may be wrong,  But old habits are hard to break, and I think he will struggle correcting these.  Maybe the Colts coaching staff, have or will, succeed in breaking him of those bad habits.  I hope i am wrong.  (Except this week).  You regular readers are aware, I am a big Russell Wilson backer.  Regardless of what team he plays for.  If you are only wanting the pick sheet just scroll down. Here are the new rules for 2021 as I understand them at this time: 1. Eliminate overtime in the preseason This one is self-explanatory. Any of the (now) three preseason games that end in a tie score will remain a tie. Previously, overtime rules in the preseason were the same as regular season rules. Regular season overtime will remain untouched, but there will be no overtime in the preseason anymore. So much for this rule, as preseason is over. 2. Establishes maximum number of players in the “setup zone” during a free kick (kickoff) This is a bit of an unknown rule, but in 2020, teams that received a kick had to have at least eight players lined up in what they called the “setup zone” up until the moment the ball is kicked. For the receiving team, this “setup zone” is the space between 10 yards in front of the teed ball (the restraining line) and 15 yards in front of that. So if the ball is teed up at the 35-yard line (as usual on a kickoff), eight players on the receiving team had to be set up between the opponent’s 45-yard line and their own 40-yard line. Here’s how it looked last year: The rule change is simple. Prior to this rule change, eight was the minimum amount of players in this setup zone, but there was no maximum. Now there is a maximum of nine, meaning there needs to be at least two players outside of this zone for the receiving team. Why? Well, the reason is simply listed as “Provides excitement and competition.” The real reason likely has to do with low conversion rates of onside kicks. Previously, teams would crowd this zone with at least 10 players to recover an onside kick. For example: This is now an illegal formation. Two players will have to be beyond the 40-yard line, leaving fewer players on the receiving team to recover an onside kick. 3. Replay officials can now provide certain objective information to on-field officials The NFL didn’t fully adopt a “sky judge” this time around but this was a bit of a compromise. Now the officials in charge of replay can assist on the following new rule applications without the need for a challenge: Possession of the ball Completed or incomplete pass Touching of a loose ball, boundary line, goal line, or end line Spot of the ball/player in relation to sidelines, line of scrimmage line to gain, or goal line Down by contact (when not ruled down on the field) These issues can still be challenged by a team, but now the on-field officials can consult with replay officials if there is a “clear and obvious” issue with the call on the field. 4. Ensure the enforcement of all penalties committed by either team on extra point/two-point conversion attempts This rule simply adds these words to an already existing rule (new part is bolded): If a foul results in a retry, Team A will have the option to enforce the penalty from the spot where it attempted the try (previous spot) or from the yard line for the other try option, the location of… Continue reading NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS WEEK 1 NFL 09/09-12-13/2021

NFL 2021 RULE CHANGES

Jaguars place rookie RB Travis Etienne on season-ending injured reserve with foot injury Welcome to the 101st anniversary of  NFL football. It is THAT time of the year again.  So with Pre-season upon us I find it is time to update you on the new rules as some pertain only to Pre-season. So here are the ne new rules I know of at this moment.    1. Here’s how it looked last year:  I assume the other 3 players are deeper as this appears to be an incomplete demo showing the lineups for only the “setup zone” The rule change is simple. For example: AGAIN: I assume the other  player is  deeper,  (meaning only 1 player is allowed to be deep). as this appears to be an incomplete demo showing the lineups for only the “setup zone” This is now an illegal formation. 4. Ensure the enforcement of all penalties committed by either team on extra point/two-point conversion attempts This rule simply adds these words to an already existing rule (new part is bolded): If a foul results in a retry, Team A will have the option to enforce the penalty from the spot where it attempted the try (previous spot) or from the yard line for the other try option, the location of which is determined by any previously enforced penalty, if applicable. I believe this simply means they will tack on penalties if they occur on back-to-back try attempts. 5. Add a loss of down to the penalty of a second forward pass Previously, when a team committed a penalty for two forward passes on one play, the enforcement was simply a 5-yard penalty. Now teams will also incur a loss of down for the same penalty, in addition to the 5 yards. This new rule addition also impacts the very rare occasion in which the ball crosses the line of scrimmage, then goes back behind the line of scrimmage, then a forward pass is attempted. That is still illegal, but it will now also incur a loss of down in addition to the 5-yard penalty. 6. JERSEY NUMBER CHANGES! The NFL has limits on what positions can hold what numbers. The main purpose of this is to designate eligible receivers from non-eligible receivers. This year the NFL has loosened those restrictions but kept the eligible/ineligible designations intact. Here are the new legal numbers by position: QB: 1-19 RB: 1-49, 80-89 TE: 1-49, 80-89 WR: 1-49, 80-89 OL: 50-79 DL: 50-79, 90-99 LB: 1-59, 90-99 DB: 1-49 One note on this rule: If a player desires to change numbers for the 2021 season, they will have to personally buy out the remaining stock of their jerseys from distributors, according to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. If they want to change next year, they are not required to do so. This is a long-standing rule in the NFL, and it may cause players to wait a year to change numbers. In addition to these six new rules, the NFL also adopted a new way in which teams will report visits. Here’s the specific language: Views: 139

2021 MARCH MADNESS PICK SHEETS , UPDATES AND OCCASIONAL OPINION

This is where you can print your “OFFICE POOL” Bracket, Check the scores, etc. Yes I will have “MY PICKS” so you can compare your picks to mine. (And Laugh or Cry)I will have A “MASTER BRACKET”,  “WHAT IF YOU CHOSE THE HIGH PICKS”  for each game.  Yes I will have MY PICKS. .An “UPSET” will be RED on “ALL HIGH PICKS”  Bracket.  GREEN indicate HIGH SEED Win What is a seed?  Merely a starting place.  Although unlikely, IT is possible for two 16 seeds to meet in the final game.  Would lets say Michigan St  were to be seeded as a number 16.  They would still have  to win all games to be CHAMPION ! SEEDING attempts to give a more favored team an easier path to the CHAMPIONSHIP.  Seeding should lead to  the best 2 teams playing in the final game.  However there  is always that upset minded team;  or  the chance that the favored team has a bad game, a stand out player is sick or injured. To  print BRACKET:  HOVER OVER SHEET.  You will see a window at bottom with an arrow pointing down (second from right).  Click this button.  It will open a new window with the bracket then click the printer icon or go to file,  and PRINT. The NCAA has named replacement teams in the event any team is unable to start the tournament due to COVID-19.  The 4 teams are Louisville, Colorado State, St. Louis and Mississippi.  These teams were the first 4 to miss the cut.  After Tournament starts there will be no replacements.  Any team deemed unable to play will be considered a “NO CONTEST” , and team still able to play will automatically advance. Tournament may have to have to switch days the East Region and Midwest Region play their Sweet 16 games.  If number 6 seed BYU advances to SWEET SIXTEEN.  The reason is; the East Region is scheduled to play on Sunday March 28.   BYU being a Mormon, (Latter Day Saints), have a strict rule of not playing games on SUNDAY.  Out of respect for the religion NCAA has agreed to switch the 2 Play dates.  NCAA  ANNOUNCES Oregon advances with no contest.  VCU Covid-19 Was it just me or did UCLA Coach Mick Cronin,  have a surprised look on his face after defeating Michigan St. Six Referees sent home from Tournament.  COVID-19 related.  I have to think Texas Tech Coach Chris Beard lost the chance for his team to advance.  Why did he leave his team playing the last couple of minutes as if they had a 10 point lead.  Letting them play a stall tactic, instead of attacking the basket.  The momentum of the game was on their side.  WHY?  I’m sure Coach Beard had his reasons.  We may never understand his thinking at that time; even if we know. I would like to see the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME played between UCLA; because they have come the farthest starting the tournament as a play in game.   AND Baylor,  because they have waited 61 years to return to the FINAL FOUR  Then I would like to see Baylor win the whole thing.  They are so long overdue.  The Baylor team last played in Championship game in 1948, getting beat by Kentucky, (who won their first championship), 58-42 at Madison Square Garden. TRIVIA Baylor in first FINAL FOUR  since 1950. Gonzaga’s last trip to the FINAL FOUR was in 2017. UCLA last appeared in Final Four in 2008. (Their 3rd consecutive appearance). Houston last made the FINAL FOUR in 1984. Star players that year were Ralph Sampson, Clyde Drexler, and Hakeem Olajuwon Arkansas 1st Elite appearance since 1995 Oregon St advances to ELITE 8.  After 39 year absence.
