SUPER BOWL XLIX FEB. 01, 2015

UPDATE:  NFL has found 11 of the 12 balls used Sunday against the Colts, were indeed under inflated.  I guess the Patriots were afraid of the Colts beating them.  Not that they had to as it turned out.   What punishment would be appropriate?  We know the answer.  FORFEIT TO THE COLTS.  But they won’t go that far.  Any thing less will be merely a slap on the wrist.   After all the MARKETING MONIES, and PUBLICITY for advancing to the Super Bowl will way out weigh any other punishment.    Suspension of William Stephen “Bill” Belichick.  No problem.  Given the  teams history, they will most likely find a way for him to watch and get plays to the other coaches.  Speaking of the other coaches,  who have been with Belichick long enough to know how he would call the game any way.  Maybe suspending QB Tom Brady, TE Rob Gronkowski, Place Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, Punter Ryan Allen, and of course RB LaGarrette Blount.  But suspending players would not really be fair to those players or the rest of the team. What ever punishment handed should have a HUGE impact on  the Patriots bottom line. HOW ABOUT Forfeiture of all income springing from their advancement to and including Their SUPER BOWL appearance.  (excluding the players pay. Of Course).  Plus any sanctions NFL chooses to place on Future Draft Picks, etc.etc.  We  all know MONEY is what PROFESSIONAL  SPORTS  IS ALL ABOUT! We have now reached the BIGGEST game of the season…..     “SUPER BOWL”  !!!!!. Two great teams, Two great Quarter Backs, with a great supporting cast. Yes the QB’s usually take the praise when his team wins.  But he is also called upon to bear the burden when his team gets beat.  Just like the Pitcher on a Baseball team.  BUT, in FOOTBALL.  There are many teams.  Offense, Defense, Special Teams,  Back up Player, Practice Teams, Coaching Team, and lets not forget that all important team……the 12 th man team.  Everyone of these teams are just as important as the  other.  The OFFENSE, plays its game to MOVE the ball down field, and SCORE points. The DEFENSE,  plays its game to STOP the movement down the field, and if the opportunity arises, STEAL the ball away.  (Just like in Basketball).  Then in semi-rare occasions SCORE points.   Kind of makes it seem like the DEFENSE does most of the work and gets a passing note of praise, for a win. The SPECIAL TEAMS.  Are a combination of OFFENSE and DEFENSE.  They are the SPECIALISTS, as the name implies. They can return kickoffs, or receive punts, or play for the onside kick.  They include the KICKERS, SETTERS, RETURNERS, and anything else they may be asked to do. The PRACTICE TEAM, is that unknown group, which plays one of the most important roles on the team.  They don’t make the big money, the game time players make.  (Perhaps $100,000.00 a a year).  What many people don’t realize is the Practice Team must mimic every opponent their team may face in a season.  After  all, how would the Patriots practice against the Seahawks, and vice-versa.  If you think that is easy,  try being a different team every week. The BACK UP Team.  The Subs, the Bench warmers. The men who sit on the sidelines hoping to someday get into a real game.  They must be ready at any moment to enter the game and play up to the same standards as the starters.  While on the sidelines they must be cheerleaders, spirit lifters, if you will.  It can’t be easy waiting to get in a game, (most likely; even if un-concioiusly  hoping for something to happen to the starter to afford them their chance), to be that support group. The Coaching Team.  Held together by the HEAD COACH.  Each coach has his speciality.  They are the ones who decides the plays, trains the players, and inspires them to succeed.  Of course if you ask any one of them HIS job is the most important coaching position on the team.  But the Head coach is the one who acts as referee, and maintains the peace among this group.  I’m sure the Offensive Co-ordinator, makes most of the offensive play calls, just as the Defensive Co-Ordinator, makes the decisions on defensive plays. Etc.Etc. on down the line.  But the Head Coach is the ultimate decision maker. NOW.  We come to that all important 12 th MAN TEAM.  They are sometimes called the “Boosters”, because that is what they do.  They give the team that extra BOOST.  Cheering them on to work harder, Applauding them when they make good plays.  Supporting the team by buying the game tickets, concessions, and the various souvenirs, and Team apparel.  They make noise to drown out the opposing teams signals, and hush up so their team can be heard and on the same wavelength. On one hand you have the seasoned veteran, TOM BRADY.  On the other hand you have that “undersized” QB, RUSSEL WILSON, who is in his THRD year.  BUT…. by the way already has one Super Bowl Championship under his belt.  HUH? Can that be right.  The QB most teams thought was to short to play that position effectively?  YEP.  That be him.  (Not to brag or anything.  But if you check my post  of Jan. 13, 2012.  Colts 1st Round Draft Pick Is….  I had Wilson as a TOP 3 Pick: in my eyes the most capable of the three).  Can he be the QB with 2 Super Bowl Championships in a career of 3 years. This should be the BEST Super Bowl in MANY years.  But there is always that unknown phantom that can come in and just make the game a blow out.  As my Dad, always said.  “HOPE FOR THE BEST, AND EXPECT THE WORSE”. As of this writing the odds makers in Las Vegas, have made no move as to odds and who they think will win.  Right now it is just… Continue reading SUPER BOWL XLIX FEB. 01, 2015

NFL Conference Play Championships Confidence Picks Jan 18 2015

COMMENTS:  Biggest Blown Call.. The reversal of Dez Bryant REVERSAL.  I replayed the action numerous times.  I had others observe it and we all agreed no doubt he had control.  switched hands, stretched to cross line and scored a TD.  But apparently scoring a TD  is not considered  completing a play in the NFL. Then you look at the TD in the College Playoff.  Oregon players TD counted.  But I can’t understand how he could have had control when he had like one finger touching the end of the ball when crossed the line. Oh well two different games. I know most of you aren’t playing the “pool”  any more.  What we did when I ran the company pool,  was raised the entry fee.  AND heavily relied on the Tie Breaker. Enjoy the rest of  the season. I don’t care for the “PRO BOWL”  so you won’t see any posts on that. But now we are down to the final four.  We should be able to see an all out effort by all teams.  Hopefully it will be more like the NCAA division 3 (I think it was).  VERY,VERY few flags.  They let them play.  Enjoyed that game immensely.   For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT).  The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game.  EXAMPLE:  Say this week we have 17 games.  The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 17 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1.   We use the Monday night game as a TIE BREAKER.  The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. If we were playing this is how my sheet would look;  My pick will be in bold Capital letters.  you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting.  I will show my correct points in Bold   This year I am making a change in the scoring.  YOU can adopt the new scoring or continue to use the old scoring. This year we get a negative score for missed games.  We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions.  EXAMPLE:  LAST YEAR if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pt on the second game and was wrong you would still have a Positive 1.  HOWEVER. this year the same scenario would result with a -14 score. I will fill in my picks Friday.  Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use.  Or to see if you can beat me. NFL Divisional Playoffs Jan. 10-11,2014. Confidence Picks

We had a fun week this last weekend.  We had one very good game.  One out of 4, means we had 25% good games, and 75% not so good. I would have to call the Ravens win over the Steelers a surprise.  Perhaps not an upset. The Interstate match up of the Bengals, and Colts, came off as I suspected.  One would think this would be a big rivalry.  From Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, is a mere 112 mile drive.  Just a bit over 2 hours apart.  But for some reason, that rivalry never seem to materialize.(Just for those who do not know.  Lucas Oil Stadium is also 181 miles from Chicago’s Soldiers Field.   about a 4 hour drive.  I imagine the fans of those two teams would love to see more games between the two….but not very likely.  Before the Colts came to town and the Bengals existed “Da Bears” were Indiana’s HOME TEAM). Had Arizona been totally healthy, I little doubt they would have advanced.  …..But, that is why I picked Carolina. There was little doubt in anybody’s mind the Cowboys, would triumph over Detroit.  Yeah I know some of you will bring up the so-called “CONSPIRACY CALL”.  The way I saw the play the on field reversal was the correct call.  The only problem was the OFFICIALS  failed to talk the call over before announcing it.   BUT how about: who was it Dez Bryant?  Or some Cowboy went onto the field without a HELMET.  That should have been an infraction, but the officials merely told him to go back to the bench.  Not only did he not have a helmet,  but as far as I was concerned it put a 12th man on the field who was neither entering to play, or leaving after a play.  Let me assure you I am not a Cowboys, or Lions fan.  Thus that makes me an “IMPARTIAL OBSERVER”. Now we are down to what we call the Elite Eight. Congratulations to all teams who made it this far. NFL Playoff Wild Card Confidence Picks Week 1 Jan.3-4,2015

I must say I was somewhat surprised by my own results this week. Just in:  Buffalo Bills coach DOUG MARRONE has opted out of his contract.  The out clause was activated by he sale of the team.     Could a short hop to the N.Y. Jets be in order? Now we are at the CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES.  “SUPER BOWL”. Last weeks HIGHLIGHTS: Houston’s  J.J. Watt, became the only 2 time player to record 20 sacks in a season.  To top it off his 20th sack also scored a SAFETY. Tampa Bay Buccaneers “won”  the first pick for next years draft.  Both Tennessee Titans, and Tampa Bay tied with a 2-14 record.  HOWEVER the tie breaker ( whichever team whose opponents had the lowest winning percentage) favored the Bucs.   Miami Dolphins Lamar Miller carried the ball from the 3 yd.  line for a 97  yard TD.  and cap 1000 yard season.   Longest run was in 1983 when Cowboy TONY DORSETT, ran 99 yds.  Following Dorsett is Green Bay Packers’ RB Ahman Green.  Green ran a 98 yd. TD in 2003.  In 1939 Packer Andy Urham also ran a 97 yd. TD.   As of this writing,  we know of 4 coaches who have been relieved of duty.  First is the Jets’ Rex Ryan.  Ryan has not finished above 500 the last 4 seasons.   Will he land at Chicago?     Atlanta Coach Mike Smith is looking for another job.  Smith went 10-22 the last 2 seasons, and was 1-4 in post season.    Chicago Bears’ Coach Marc Trestman, with a 5-11 season is out.  So is Bears’ GM Phil Emery.  I think this is a much needed move.  I think,  there should be more releases up the ladder.   Jay Cutler took the blame much of the season for the Bears poor performance.  However in all the games I watched the ENTIRE TEAM,   Seemed somewhat amiss.  I saw no real heart in their actions on the field.   I’m not saying Cutler is the caliber player he is being paid as…. BUT I would most likely give him another year under new leadership.   Then we come to San Francisco 49’ers.  Will they be able to replace Jim Harbaugh.  Probably not.   But, the way I see it.  Winning is secondary to 49’ers  management.  Much like the Indianapolis Colts when Jim Irsay took over.  Irsay wanted to tell the coaches who to play what plays to run, etc. etc.  It wasn’t until he learned to trust his coaching staff that the Colts started to do any good.  I believe San Francisco’s management staff have yet to learn that lesson.  AND we all know JIM HARBAUGH is no YES MAN!   GOOD LUCK AT MICHIGAN COACH HARBAUGH.   One last note.  WHAT TEAM FINISHED THE SEASON WITHOUT A TD  BY A WR?  ….Kansas City Chiefs.  Of course.   Looking Ahead NFL Divisional Playoffs Saturday, Jan. 10 AFC: 4:35 p.m. (ET) Baltimore at New England (NBC) NFC: 8:15 p.m. (ET) Carolina at Seattle (FOX) Sunday, Jan. 11 NFC: 1:05 p.m. (ET) Dallas at Green Bay (FOX) AFC: 4:40 p.m. (ET) Indianapolis at Denver (CBS)   For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). Belated Super Bowl Wrap-up

I know it is rather late.  I have been busy doing some consulting work.  Then discovered had an issue with connection upon my return.  So this will be short and sweet. YES!!! Seattle Seahawks with Russell Wilson WON! I wish we had a better game.  With the top OFFENSE Vs. The top DEFENSE : We should have had a GREAT game.  However as I predicted the difference was the Defensive effort.  The Denver Broncos had that one blunder in the opening seconds of the game, which threw them in a tizzy.  Between that awkward start and the smothering defense of the Seahawks,  The Broncos could not recover. I do wish we had seen better showings by both Peyton Manning, and Montee Ball.  But neither got much chance to show their skills.   Seahawks defense all over them and every Bronco. Now the question is will we see key players from both or either team take advantage of their success this year, to enhance their PAYCHECK.   Unfortunately the day of loyalty is long past.  Few players have it.  I think Peyton Manning would have taken a pay cut to stay with the Indianapolis Colts.  Just one of the few LOYAL players around. Speaking of Mr. Manning:  I think he may have another year in him.  The question is this:  Is the desire still beating in his heart.  Little brother, has the Super Bowl bragging rights, but Peyton has all those records. I suppose we will just have to wait and see how this all unfolds. Congratulations to both teams for the exceptional season they put together That Is How I See It. P.S.  I know the Daytona NASCAR race is coming up.  But After all these years I could care less.  I usually just flip through the channels and catch glimpses of it.  Mike Helton and the powers behind him have ruined it for me. But we will be having our MARCH MADNESS  posts.  Look for them. Views: 105

NFL SUPER BOWL XLVIII

It is finally here   SUPER BOWL 48 !!!!!        Vs  SUNDAY 02/02/2014.   Kick off is scheduled for  6:25 pm on the FOX. Although the schedule I read states the game on FOX starting at 6:30.  So I advise you to tune in early, and be prepared for a later kickoff. Question one Do you enjoy the game, or the party? For some it is more of an excuse for a party.  Others just enjoy the game.  Some people will only watch to see the commercials,  Some watch THE HALFTIME SHOW.   And believe it or not there are those who will watch for all of  the above.    As for me I will watch for the game and my favorite commercial,  the BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES.   Now for some info:  As I said last week DO NOT GO TO NEW YORK TO WATCH THE GAME.  Because although the New York Giants play their games there, the actual stadium is not even in the state of New York.  The game will be played in EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY.  Therefore New York has to cash in on the parties and extra curricular activities.  It doesn’t seem right does it.  The Giants should actually be called the NEW JERSEY GIANTS.  Of course NEW JERSEY probably doesn’t care because the state benefits from the games, refreshments, etc of the games played there.  But Imagine this,  What would the Illinois residents think if the Chicago Bears were actually played in Gary Indiana.  Same thing. Looking at the TV Commercial costs.  I read (somewhere, don’t ask me where as I generally read at least 7 newspapers before 10:oo am each day, and check about 5 -6 TV station websites plus whatever else catches my eye),  as an average a commercial costs $19,789.80 a second or  $593,694.00 for 30 seconds, which come up to $1,187,388.00 a minute. Lets not forget production costs for those commercials.  There are approximately 30 minutes of commercials during the game.  Given this rough estimates that is $35,652,164.00 for the network.  Now remember this does not include the pre game and post game shows. This will be the first OUTDOOR COLD WEATHER Super Bowl,   since SUPER BOWL X.   The first played on Field Turf, (artificial grass).  AND, What I think makes this match up unique it will be the only the SECOND TIME IN 20 YEARS THAT WILL BE A TRUE, (In my estimation), SUPER BOWL,  pitting the NUMBER ONE seeds from each conference HEAD TO HEAD. GAME SETUP:  Veteran Peyton Manning Vs New Comer Russell Wilson, who in just his Sophomore season has led his team to this Super Bowl. For the DENVER BRONCOS.  You will watch the old veteran PEYTON MANNING, in what I believe will be his THIRD Super Bowl appearance.  No doubt as to his abilities, or his knowledge.  Manning is a true student of the game.  I feel sure he (with the aid of the coaching staff), have well prepared his team for this meeting. Going over countless clips of the SEATTLE SEAHAWKS,  DEFENSE.  Picking up every nuance of the Seattle defense, every tell that may tip off the DEFENSE strategy.  Heck he has probably had some input for the DEFENSE as well.  But will his experience and knowledge be enough to outscore the SEAHAWKS? For the SEATTLE SEAHAWKS.  We find a comparative youngster leading the team.  Although his record would be-lie that fact.  He has abilities that Manning lacks, but this will be his first Super Bowl, He will have to rely on his coaches to send in the knowledge that Manning has already locked up in his head.  Can they,  The coaches convey this effectively to Wilson.  I am sure they have done their best.  Some may question the affect the stage (SUPER BOWL)  will have on this young man.  Speaking from my own experience, (on a somewhat smaller stage), THE GAME IS THE THING.  I never heard the crowd, or even thought about them.  I was only playing the game, to win.  That is all I had on my mind, never so much as looked at the time clock.  The referees will tell me when the game is over, then I can look at the scoreboard all I want.  I think this will be how Russell Wilson will see it. Final Analysis:  I could be wrong but,  I firmly believe the key to this CHAMPIONSHIP GAME will be DEFENSE.  Both teams have demonstrated .  for the most part exemplary defenses.  They have also had spells of fading into the grass,  what happened in those times.  If both teams bring their DEFENSE and keeps them awake, I am looking for a very good, close game.  But I think that is the whole KEY to the game.   Too close to really call.  On one hand I think Veteran, on the other I am compelled to go with the “Newbie”.  As long as we get a SUPER QUALITY game, I suppose it doesn’t much matter.  Denver fans won’t agree and Seattle fans won’t agree with me on that.  (Notice me stalling).   I am like both QB’s.  My mind is telling me one thing.  My heart another.  I will admit here that having attended University of Wisconsin.  I have to root for Denver and Montee Ball, and with my respect for Manning.  But I did watch the impact that Russell Wilson made in just one year there, of course Montee was there too.  Like I said too Close, (still stalling). So let me say Good Luck to Both teams, and their respective fans. And please remember it reflects badly on your team if behave badly, Win, or Lose.  So please celebrate like adults, and not like a prison riot.   Okay my pick for Super Bowl XLVIII   is (drum roll please)…………………………………..   .SEATTLE BY 2 That Is How I See It.   Views: 107

NFL Post Pro Bowl 2014 Final Thoughts

First me say I did not watch but bits and pieces, for reasons stated in the previous post. So this will be short. The times I did watch I saw what I expected to see,  a walk thru practice game.  Not a FULL contact.  I realize some of you may say. “But look at the final score.  It went down to the wire”.  Haven’t we all done that in some games with our friends or KIDS.  Just make things interesting.  Like I said an extremely short post. If you enjoyed the “game”,  Good for you.  Glad you did Stop by later for my take on the Super Bowl.  HINT: Don’t go to New York to watch the game. That Is How I See It. Views: 88

Baltimore Ravens Win !!!

Perhaps the L-O-N-G-E-S-T  Super Bowl game in History. BALTIMORE’S RAVENS  bested the SAN FRANCISCO FORTY-NINER’S by a score of 34-31. Last night Championship was extended by a power outage.  I have read some say it was an external feed,  and another report that it was snafu inside the arena; an equipment failure.  Either way the side line announcers had the burden of filling in unexpected time. Another thing that made it seem longer to me was the half baked,…er time show.  I know many of you are Beyonce fans.  But I would like to have more entertainment than a bunch of women in their swimsuits jumping around and making noise.  I actually switched over to watch bits of a COLUMBO re-run. Now to the game.  Yes my Math and my Scientific methods both failed.  Therefore I could claim the Ravens win to be a fluke.  But that was not the case.  In fact it came down to, (as I said),  D-E-F-E-N-S-E. Baltimore brought their defense and San Francisco’s was running way late on it’s arrival.  I believe both QB’s did an excellent job.  I also believe had San Francisco got their defense together before the power failure.  They would have won the game.  But they didn’t, and they didn’t. The game hinged on the 108 yard return by Ravens’ Jacoby Jones.  There is no way that return should have happened.  The 49’ers defense left the whole field unprotected.  No one stayed back.  Just as in a high school game I watched this past season.  The kicker rushed down and tackled the receiver 5 yards after the catch.  But that was a mistake.  Even though he was able to do that.  His coach wasted no time in letting him know it was a mistake.  The rest of the season he stayed back and saved many potential scores. Flacco was GIFTED the MVP.  Yeah, he did a good job.  WAS it a better job than Kaepernick.  Not in my eyes.  The true MVP   was the Ravens DEFENSE.  But how do you give MVP, (the “P” is singular) to a group.  Thus you give it to a single person.  Jacoby Jones would be a fair choice, it was his run back that won the game.  But that was only one play.  The DEFENSE on the other hand was on thier game most all night. So I suppose as the QB is often considered the leader an Spokesman for the team, Flacco would be give MVP, on behalf of the team.  After all ,  as in any T-E-A-M SPORT,  one person can not win the game by himself. Congratulations to the BALTIMORE RAVENS.  And I want to compliment fans on both sides.  I have not seen any reports of rioting or anything.  This shows me their fans are (both Baltimore, and San Francisco),  are CHAMPIONS too. Hope to see you NFL fans back here again next year.  I have time to try to figure what I did wrong this year. I suppose the next big event is  NASCAR SEASON. and for some the NBA All-Star game.  I  don’t care for the All-Star game.  Because they don’t really have any BASKETBALL stars.  Merely Media Darlings.  I will go into my feelings about the NBA  at a later time. I may have opinions to share about NASCAR later. Looking forward to NCAA Basketball tournament.  will give my picks, updates and OPINION; just like i did last year. For now We close the book on: 2012 FOOTBALL,and the 2013 SUPER BOWL XLVII. One final note some of the commercials were good.  Some not.  But at least some got more exposure due to the 34 minute delay.  My favorite was, again Budweiser, with the CLYDESDALE COLT. Thank you for indulging me.     Views: 103

SUPER BOWL XLVII..MATH vs SCIENCE PICKS

It is finally here.                SUPER BOWL WEEKEND !!!!!! So here we are.  Two Teams, Two Cities, Two States. And for all purposes EAST COAST Vs WEST COAST.  Being played on the SOUTH COAST.  One Team being around since 1946.  (SAN FRANCISCO 49’ers). And a relative newcomer, A teenager if you will.  Being 50 years the junior of SF.  The Baltimore Ravens; established in 1996.  (Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles),  Could this tell us BALTIMORE is for the birds.  (Sorry could not resist).  But I am sure Baltimore is all out for their two teams. My personal belief is the game will be decided not so much by the offense, but by the DEFENSE.  Baltimore will have to come up with a way to stop SF’s Offensive machine.  Primarily QB Kaepernick. I have come up with two different modes of predicting the winner of this confrontation.  One is my usual MATHEMATICAL system, taking into account the stats, and other variables.  (This has not worked really well for me this year, as you, who have followed my picks can attest). The other is a tried and proven SCIENTIFIC method. My MATHEMATICAL pick is……..(drum roll please)……. SAN FRANCISCO    by 4 SCIENTIFICALLY speaking The Winner will be ( if conditions are right) BALTIMORE.  however if the conditions are different we again must give the nod to SAN FRANCISCO.   seeing as Baltimore is in a colder climate.  San Francisco is in somewhat warmer area. Tomorrow we will have an answer. If the GROUNDHOG sees his SHADOW.  Baltimore will be the new SUPER BOWL CHAMPS. (By however many points they can manage)    HOWEVER!!!   If he does not see his shadow it will no doubt be    San Francisco. UPDATE:  Phil has made his prediction.  PHIL picks ……San Francisco Baltimore or San Francisco.  You now have my picks, WHO DO YOU THINK. Will my SCIENTIFIC METHOD PROVE to be better than my MATHEMATIC  method. Or will there be a coincidence between the two selecting the same team. Final Score 31 Enjoy your parties, the game, the COMMERCIALS. BY the way a side not here.  I have been informed the average cost for a commercial is approximately $133 333.33  a SECOND.  There will be about 48 minutes of commercials. (12 minutes less the game).  So we have, again do your own math; mine hasn’t been so good.  60 seconds in a minute times 48 = 2,880 seconds.  Times $133,333.33 = 3.8 something my calculator ran into an error. GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND MAY YOU ROOT FOR THE WINNER. P.S. I truly hope we have no one wreaking havoc because their team won or lost.  This I don’t understand.  It may be an important game to all football fans.  BUT, IT IS STILL JUST A GAME               and a Views: 96
