Welcome to our 4th year of NFL CONFIDENCE PICKS !!!!! This also marks the 97th SEASON OF THE NFL!! We; no doubt, will see many errant calls by the field officials. SOME legitimate, (after all they are human and can make a miss call). Some wil most likely come from NFL RULE changes. So be prepared for some mistakes, both from teams, players, and officials. I will have these rule changes posted with the PICK sheets for the next 3-4 weeks COMMENT: I really hate to bring this up. But I can’t help wondering if any of you have the same feeling on this subject. I feel , MAKIING TOM BRADY AN HONORARY CAPTAIN OF THE MICHIGAN WOLVERINES DURING HIS TIME OF PUNISHMENT ( THE SUSPENSION), IS AN AFFRONT TO not only the School, the Alumni, and all the the things the NCAA is supposed to stand for. WHY! Honor someone who CHEATED!!!! Maybe after he has served his suspension. Then he could have a message of what he learned . (If anything). To me this is just not the right thing to do. He takes back the message that “Cheating is okay. (Just don’t get caught). This could spill over to the academics; if it is okay to cheat on the field, it must be okay to cheat in the classroom. Here is a list of the rule changes, as I understand them. Extra Points Permanently Moved Back. Last year was a 1-year trial run for extra points being moved from the 2- to the 15-yard line. This year, the vote was to make the change permanent, Press Box Coach-to-Player Communication. In the past, coaches in the press box could not talk to players with the communication system directly. The coach in the press box had to radio down to the sideline; then the coach on the sideline could relay it to the player. Now, teams have the option of the “box coach” talking directly to the players. The hope here is to have fewer delay of game issues? Chop Blocks Are Eliminated. Chop blocks are now illegal, However, you can still go low if a defensive player engages you first. (This may change some teams’ playbooks on offense, but shouldn’t have a major impact. (Defenders, might feel safer about their lower legs.) Ejection for Certain Unsportsmanlike Penalties. This was passed for a one-year trial run. (Shouldn’t this be at the Official’s descretion). Hopefully this will not come up more than 2-3 times during the season. I look for it to be tossed next season. I do not know what the Certain Unsportsmanlike actions will be. But to call for EJECTION, they must be pretty severe. Touchbacks Now Come Out to the 25. I see this as an attempt to eliminate run backs. After it is rare when someone ran it back for 25 yards. I didn’t even like it coming out to the 20. It is like a free play. NOW that fictionalplay will get you down 25% of the field. Let’s just make the field 75 yards long? The challenge will now be for the KICKER to kick HIGH and SHORT . This proposal passed for a one-year trial run as well. I think the fans will not take to this rule. ( I think moving the kickoff to the ten yard line would be more acceptable). Horse Collar Expanded. The horse collar penalties have been expanded to a little below the neck area of the jersey; grabbing anywhere near the name area and yanking the player down will be an infraction moving forward. I don’t see the reasoning behind this. I suppose it is to give the officials a little leeway. One way to interpret this rule, (I suppose), would be….PLAYERS MAY USE THE HORSE COLLAR TO S..L..O..W THE RUNNER; THEN SLIDE DOWN AND MAKE THE TACKLE JUST DON’T PUT HIM TO GROUND WHILE IN THE HIGH AREA. (Heck, next year it may be illegal to touch a player above the waist). Five Yard Penalty for Excess Timeout. If a team tries to call a timeout when they don’t have one, there will be a delay of game penalty called on them. This could work either way. Penalty OR benefit, (Example in a two minute drill? just saying) I think if they are going to hae this rule it should be at last a TEN yard penalty. (Or, just for the heck of it let’s make it a 7 1/2 yard penalty. Add a little twist to the game. Illegal Touching Penalty. Previously, if a player went out of bounds and then caught a pass, it’s not a legal catch. The offending team would be penalized five yards, but would repeat the down. Now, with the new rule, the offending team will not be penalized in yardage, but they will lose the down. Thus ruled as an incomplete pass. Double Foul Issue: A. If there is a double foul during a down in which there is a change of possession, THE team last gaining position may keep the ball UNLESS, its’ foul was committed prior to the change of possesion. B. NCAA March Madness 2016
What a thrilling ending to the 2016 edition of MARCH MADNESS. North Carolina probably wishing the could have waited a couple of seconds for their final shot. I didn’t do so well. I DID however pick a number two seed to win (Michigan State); BUT it was a number two seed which won. So I have to give myself a half credit (?). It has been FUN. I plan to do this again next year. Despite my troubles with CHROME. It gave me fits in updating. I would spend sometimes an hour updating just one bracket sheet. Finally learned I had to clear my cache every time before I attempted to update anything. Be sure to check back regularly. I don’t have any idea what I will write about….. NO! wait I have some idea. Maybe some racing history. (If I can find the notes I made a couple years ago. Also…. who knows. WELCOME TO OUR 2016 MARCH MADNESS. I am not sure How many years we have been doing this. I will have to look it up. This is where you can print your “OFFICE POOL” Bracket, Check the scores, etc. I will have this “MASTER BRACKET”, “WHAT IF YOU CHOSE THE HIGH PICKS” for each game. An “UPSET BRACKET” (if the favored team wins it will be in Green, if it is an upset it will be listed in RED”. And, Yes I will have my picks so you can compare your picks to mine. (And Laugh or Cry) What is a seed? Merely a starting place. Although unlikely, IT is possible for two 16 seeds to meet in the final game. Would lets say Michigan St were to be seeded as a number 16. They would still have to win all games to be CHAMPION ! SEEDING attempts to give a more favored team an easier path to the CHAMPIONSHIP. Seeding should lead to the best 2 teams playing in the final game. However there is always that upset minded team; or the chance that the favored team has a bad game, a stand out player is sick or injured. I am reminded of one year in our STATE High School WRESTLING Tournament. The Athletic Assn. decided to go with a draw, rather than seeding. The Result? Two wrestlers with one defeat each faced each other in the first match. Loser of a first round match goes home. It was a 3 OT match. One of these wrestlers went home, while wrestlers with more losses during the season advanced. The winner of this match had no competition left. Easy wins. He won the CHAMPIONSHIP that first match. Not much excitement. Reportedly there is a TEENAGE GIRL in Indiana who has only missed 3 games in this years bracket. She picked Texas over Northern Iowa. California over Hawaii. Final game she had Syracuse over North Carolina. Her Champion pick is……VILLANOVA. She says she does not follow Basketball regularly and has only attended a game or two at her high school. NFL Playoff Wild Card Confidence Picks Week 1 Jan.9-10,2016
Regular Season has ended. Is it just me, or did this season seem to just fly by? Maybe I was just having too much fun. (Yeah, that’s it as many low spots, as I have had this year). Like week 17, my gut was saying Seahawks over Cardinals. But NO! I went with the numbers. Maybe there are times when one should listen to their gut. RECAP: Two games were decided by 3 or less points. Perhaps the biggest unexpected blow out WAS the Seattle Vs Arizona game. I really expected it to be a close game. It’s a new season, now. A fresh start for all teams. Will the leaders continue, on there merry romp, or will they falter. It appears Seattle is peaking at the right moment. Will other teams begin their rise to the top? This year I am making a change in the scoring. YOU can adopt the new scoring or continue to use the old scoring. This year we get a negative score for missed games. We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions. EXAMPLE: LAST YEAR if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pt on the second game and was wrong you would still have a Positive 1. WEEK 16 RECAP: Three games went into overtime. Two games were decided by 3 or less points. Three teams failed to score in double digits. This is the week that I expect to score low. This is the week too many teams have nothing gain by a win. Starters may see some or no action, to protect them from injury. Teams which do have something to gain will do whatever they can to get that added WIN. So you never know what to expect. My week was pretty dismal. But the two previous weeks were great. I suppose one must not let the bad weeks overshadow the good. I see Cleveland is still having trouble with Johnny Manziel. I think I would be tired of babysitting him. But….Let us consider this. Perhaps Manziel is playing a game of his own. I do not believe he wants to be in Cleveland. So what better way to get his release, (either by trade or out right release). If you believe this what would you do? Trade or release? OR, keep him but bench him. Hide him away if you will, till his contract is up. He will not have gained experience, as he should have been; had he behaved as an adult player. Would any team even remember him. Would any team want a QB with his record, both on and off the field? RECAP: I see 2 games I considered upsets. Raiders over Broncos and Steelers over Bengals. NO OT games this week. Games with a 3p (FG) difference. And we saw San Diego with a failed attempt to put the game into OT, as they failed score with 2 seconds left a game an incomplete pass which would’ve ended the game was blown dead due to a false start moving them back to the 11 yd line. Where the pass was incomplete to end the game. Two chances with 2 seconds and OT at hand the Chargers failed on both attempts. WOW!!! I hope you all were able to see the Rodgers to Rodgers HAIL MARY PASS. Was there something mystical in this connection. Both players named Rodgers, Both players attended, and played FOOTBALL for the California Golden Bears, college. EERIE! Can you say C-H-O-K-E. That was the fate of the Chicago Bears. Chicago had the game sewed up. A mere 36 yard chip shot, field goal and the game was over with the Chicago Bears adding another notch in their comeback belt. (Did I just say CHIP SHOT? Sorry about that I hate it when I or anyone “cross-terms” sport jargon), But alas, was not to be. As Robbie Gould shanked the kick. I know no one is perfect. HOWEVER, with the money these men make for playing a game, is it expecting too much for them to be perfect. I can’t say it all rode on Gould’s shoulders. Whenever you look back, there is always another play that makes a difference in the outcome. Like Jay Cutler’s pick 6 pass. If he hadn’t thrown that; the game would have been over before the errant FG kick. But on the other side. Had the 49’ers made some different play, during the course of the game. They could have won. Do you suppose New England Patriots, and their fans, have finally figured out that TOM BRADY, isn’t the the…TEAM.. Like most QB’s he needs those team mates that half the people don’t know their names. Are the Seattle Seahawks really back? Russell Wilson’s has been working on and showing his passing skills. Mostly lopsided games6 this week. Only one game decided by a field goal, another decided by a blocked field goal. One game went into Over time. Thanks to a blocked field goal Cleveland showed us how to lose a tied game with no time left on the clock. We weren’t looking forward so much to a Monday night game featuring the 2-8 Browns Vs. the 3-7 Ravens. One can only guess at how few people tuned in to see this game. But what a game! Tied at 27 with the Browns 3 seconds to go. The Browns set up for a game winning FG, from the Ravens 33, A 51 FG attempt. However the Kick was low. The Result was a low kick which was tipped by Raven Brent Urban, making his NFL debut. Will Hill scooped up the loose ball, and returned it for a game winning TD. Giving the Browns the worst type of loss imaginable. Now as to the OT game. Who better than the New England Patriots, and Denver Broncos. The Manning-less Broncos hung with the unbeaten Patriots. And in the end came out on top by a score of 30-24. Are we actually witnessing the passing of the guard from Manning to Brock Osweiler? Seems that way Osweiler has proven his mettle. (So far). We all know you don’t change a horse in the middle of a stream. I am reminded of a stretch we had in my Basketball playing days. We had a player, for a while that sat the bench most of the time. (unless we had a big lead), but one night while playing one of our biggest and toughest rivals. Due to illness and injury, the Coach had no option but to put him in. We were down by 8 points, the final quarter. Coach told us whatever you do, “Do not let him have the ball…”. He did get the ball once, but passed the ball to the referee. Long story short we came back and won. Not that we were superstitious, but we played that player in the last quarter, at the same time he entered the previous game. We continued this procedure until we lost a game. I think we had a 7 game winning streak going. DON’T CHANGE HORSES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREAM. Now let us look at the Colts, situation. Backup QB Hasselbeck is on a roll, But, The Colts will be eager to insert him into the starter row as soon as possible. Afterall he is their future. But with an experienced pro like Hasselbeck they have the luxury of waiting until Luck is completely ready to come back. In Hasselbeck it would appear the Colts have the best backup QB in the league For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. What a S-T-R-A-N-G-E week. RIGHT ? It was like FRIDAY the 13th extended from Thursday to Monday. Any of you have a better explanation. I know I had my worst week in 20 years. By the way, HOW WAS YOUR WEEK? We saw 3 games with a single point margin. And one of those was a really late come back by the Mighty Patriots. They were, what like, 4 and 10, which they converted to get them to FG position. They were somehow able to get that much needed yardage. Luck, Skill, or a combination. I think it was a COMBINATION. And much more of the time than we like to admit, THAT is the difference between a W or L. The big QUESTION this week is……HAS PEYTON MANNING PLAYED HIS LAST GAME??? I think not. Do you think if he does come back it will be in a back up postition. NOT ME. Face it he has nothing to prove. He holds so many records. But having played sports myself, You always have that little voice saying ” ONE more Year”. But if you will remember; I thought Manning should retire before he left for Denver. I’m sure he will do a lot of thinking from now until next year. I really don’t expect an answer to be quickly made. BUT, I am sure if he decides he has not enough to contribute, to be competitive. He will make the choice to retire. But with all his knowledge, SOME ONE will want to add him to their coaching staff.
